Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor one podcast episode that should repeat, use OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a sequence of episodes, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Neither choice connects OBS to YouTube by itself: you still need YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, and should monitor stream health separately.
Which OBS source fits your podcast?
| Decision | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | One local audio or video file | A playlist of media items, including videos |
| Repeat control | Loop repeats the file after playback ends; documented default is Off. | Loop Playlist restarts playback when the playlist ends; documented default is On. |
| VLC installation | No VLC dependency is stated for this source. | Requires VLC installed. OBS’s documentation specifies matching architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Playback when hidden | Media Source has restart-on-activation and close-when-inactive controls. | Visibility Behavior can continue, pause, or stop playback when the source is not visible. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. |
| Media support | Uses OBS’s built-in media source support. | Uses VLC libraries for extended media support. |
OBS lists Media Source support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Confirm your episode’s format plays correctly in the OBS version and operating system you plan to use; supported formats do not guarantee every individual file will work as expected.

Set up a repeating episode or playlist
Repeat one episode with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the episode should appear or play.
- In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source. Create or select the source, then choose the episode file.
- Enable Loop. This control is documented as Off by default, so check it rather than assuming the file will repeat.
- Start playback in OBS and let the episode reach its end during a rehearsal. Confirm it starts again and that audio is audible in the intended scene.
Repeat multiple episodes with VLC Video
- Install VLC before adding the source. Match its architecture to OBS: if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the intended OBS scene, use Sources + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the episode files to the VLC Video playlist in the order you want them played.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the playlist when it runs out. Its documented default is On, but verify the setting.
- Check Visibility Behavior. Choose whether playback should continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible in the current scene. Test scene switches: this setting is about the source’s visibility in the scene, not whether the OBS application window is on screen.
- Rehearse the playlist through an episode transition and its return to the beginning. If you plan to change the playlist while live, test that specific workflow on a private or unlisted stream first.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and check the stream
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key as prompted by your OBS version.
- Set the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your chosen codec and available upload capacity. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use its current settings table for the exact combination you intend to stream rather than copying a preset for another format.
- Use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm the encoder is sending to YouTube, then check the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages.
- Test with representative episode audio and video before the real broadcast. Verify levels, image, episode transitions, the loop point, and the result of switching scenes.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer stream will be archived, so do not rely on an archive for a broadcast that exceeds that duration.
What looping does—and does not—tell you about monetization
A source’s Loop or Loop Playlist control is a playback function, not a verdict on whether a channel or stream can be monetized. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy; monetized content should offer materially varied substance and creative, educational, or other viewer value. Repeating the same episode does not by itself settle whether a channel meets that policy.

Make sure you have the necessary rights to stream the episode’s audio and video. The platform policy and OBS source controls cannot determine whether you have permission for a particular recording.
Troubleshoot common playback and stream problems
- The episode stops instead of repeating: For Media Source, check Loop. For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist and confirm the playlist contains the intended files.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not load: Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: Inspect the source’s visibility behavior. A hidden VLC Video source may be set to stop; choose the intended continue, pause, or stop behavior and rehearse scene switches.
- The source does not play the episode correctly: Check the file path and format, then test playback in the exact OBS version and operating system used for the broadcast. The documented format list is not a guarantee for every file.
- YouTube receives no stream or reports a problem: Check the stream URL and key in OBS, encoder settings, network upload capacity, and Live Control Room messages. OBS source playback and YouTube transmission are separate parts of the setup.
- You want to edit the VLC playlist during a live broadcast: The documented playlist controls do not establish that live edits always preserve uninterrupted playback. Rehearse the change on a private or unlisted stream; do not assume seamless updates.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded podcast episodes playing on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the service loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
