For one local video that should repeat, start with OBS Media Source and enable Loop. Choose VLC Video when you need a playlist or want VLC’s extended media support; VLC must be installed, and its bitness must match OBS. Neither source is documented as a 4K/60 fps performance winner. Your file, scene, output, encoder, computer and upload connection determine whether the stream can sustain that workload.
Which OBS source fits your loop?
| Decision | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| One local file | Direct fit; enable Loop to repeat it when playback completes. | Can play it, but the playlist controls add setup you may not need. |
| Multiple items | No playlist feature is described in OBS’s source documentation. | Supports a playlist, playlist looping and shuffle. |
| Format support | OBS documents common video types including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM; audio types include MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. | Uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Check the specific file on your setup; broader support is not a guarantee that every codec or container will work. |
| Extra installation | The documented source does not require separate VLC installation. | VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| 4K/60 performance | No source-specific performance guarantee in OBS documentation. | No source-specific performance guarantee in OBS documentation. |
OBS calls the first option “Media Source,” which adds media files to scenes, and describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support. These are feature differences, not evidence that one decodes a given file faster. No controlled official comparison establishes a universal CPU or GPU advantage for either source.

Set up a repeating video in OBS
Use Media Source for one file
- In OBS Studio, select the scene that will carry the stream. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if desired, then select OK. In its properties, enable Local File and use Browse to select your video.
- Enable Loop so playback repeats when the file reaches its end. OBS also documents controls for hardware decoding when available, restarting playback when the source becomes active, source speed, and behavior when the source is hidden or playback ends. Change these only to meet your intended playback behavior.
- Select OK, then check the preview. Resize or position the source in the scene if needed. If the source and canvas have different dimensions, the image may be scaled.
OBS documents MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among its supported video types. A listed container does not guarantee every codec inside it will work on every computer; verify your actual file before relying on a long stream. See OBS Media Sources.

- Install VLC before opening or configuring this source. Match its bitness to OBS: OBS documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- In the OBS scene’s Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video. If the option is absent, check that VLC is installed and that the bitness matches OBS.
- Add the desired media items to the source’s playlist. Set playlist looping if the playlist should restart after its last item; use shuffle only if you want items played in a different order.
- Review visibility behavior, network caching, audio-track selection and subtitle settings where relevant, then apply the source and check playback in the preview.
VLC Video’s wider media support does not guarantee compatibility with every file. Test the exact playlist on the machine that will run the stream. See OBS’s source documentation.

Configure OBS and YouTube for 4K/60 fps
The source only handles media playback. The rest of the pipeline must also sustain 3840 × 2160 output at 60 frames per second: OBS canvas and output settings, scaling, scene load, encoder capacity, file decoding and network upload all matter.
Match the output to the intended stream
- In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the Base (Canvas) Resolution to the working scene size and the Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840 × 2160 if that is the stream resolution you intend to send. Choose 60 in the common FPS options. If the media, canvas and output dimensions differ, OBS may scale the image.
- Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate supported by your hardware and YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps are shown below. These are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee your encoder or viewers’ connections will sustain them.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance allows up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codec options.
- In Settings > Stream, connect the appropriate YouTube account or select the YouTube service and enter the stream key supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private. Start with a test stream and verify the incoming signal and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room before depending on the loop.
| YouTube 4K/2160p at 60 fps video codec | Minimum ingest bitrate | Recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder page says 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency; the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so choosing 4K input does not guarantee every viewer receives a 4K rendition. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before configuring a stream.
OBS cautions that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. Rendering and encoding load depend on resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, source count and filters. Basic system compatibility does not guarantee a machine can stream or record a particular resolution and frame rate; there is no universal hardware minimum established for this exact 4K/60 loop workload. See OBS Studio Overview, OBS System Requirements and OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Test the whole loop before relying on it
- Run a representative stream on the target computer, with the intended source, scene, resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate. Include enough runtime to observe the complete playlist or a file restart.
- Watch OBS’s stats and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. Look for rendering or encoding overload, dropped frames, buffering, audio issues and failures when the file loops or the source changes.
- If the output is overloaded, simplify the scene and remove unnecessary sources or filters. Retest; if needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate rather than assuming a different media source will fix the limit.
- Confirm the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom. A configured bitrate is not proof of stable delivery; use YouTube’s stream-health feedback and test under the network conditions expected during the real broadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu
VLC may not be installed, or its bitness may not match OBS. Install the matching VLC version, restart OBS and check the menu again; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

The video does not play or appears black
Check that the file is accessible and that the selected source points to it. A documented file extension is not a guarantee that the particular codec will decode on your system. Try the file in the other source if appropriate, or verify compatibility with the installed decoder setup before rebuilding the stream around it.
The file stops instead of repeating
For a Media Source, check its Loop property. For VLC Video, check the playlist-loop control; looping a single item and looping a playlist are separate source behaviors.

The stream stutters or OBS reports overload
Check OBS stats to distinguish rendering or encoding pressure, and review YouTube’s health messages for delivery problems. Reduce scene complexity or filters first; if the system still cannot keep up, lower output resolution or frame rate and test again. The source choice alone does not resolve an encoder or system-capacity limit.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Compare the configured codec, CBR bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then check whether the upload can sustain the bitrate. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream-health messages; do not treat a successful local preview as proof that the incoming stream is healthy.

Copyright and the right to stream the video
Only stream material you have the rights or permission to use. A video being uploaded by you, publicly available, or repeated as a live loop does not by itself establish permission. Copyright claims, blocks or restrictions can interrupt a broadcast or affect a channel. Check the rights for the video, music and other included material, and review YouTube’s current policies before scheduling a long-running stream.
