Use OBS’s Media Source to loop one local product-demo video; use VLC Video when you need several files in a playlist. The choice controls how media plays inside an OBS scene—it does not configure the separate connection to YouTube Live.
Which OBS source should you use?

These labels and defaults are from the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022. It does not specify a current OBS release number, so check the properties in your installed version if a label or default differs.

How do I loop one video in OBS?
- Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should show the demo, or create one in the Scenes panel.
- Add the source. In Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, give it a clear name, and confirm.
- Select the file. In the source properties, use the local-file option to choose your product-demo video.
- Enable repetition. Turn on Loop so playback starts again after the file ends. This setting is off by default in the cited OBS documentation.
- Set activation behavior. Decide whether Restart playback when source becomes active suits your scene; it is on by default. Close file when inactive is off by default. If the source is hidden and shown again, these settings affect how playback behaves.
- Fit it into the scene. Resize and position the source in the preview. Check the Sources order: sources above the video may cover part of the demo.
How do I loop a playlist in OBS?
- Install VLC if needed. Add the VLC Video source only after installing VLC. Match the architecture: the OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the chosen scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is unavailable, confirm VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
- Build the list. In the source properties, add the local files you want to play and arrange them in the intended order. The OBS guide describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist, unlike Media Source.
- Choose sequence or shuffle. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; it is off by default. Enable it only if you want the order randomized.
- Repeat the list. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the playlist after its last item; OBS’s documentation says it is on by default.
- Check visibility behavior and layout. VLC Video stops when it is not visible and restarts when visible by default. Position it in the preview and make sure overlays or other sources do not obscure important demo details.
Connect the OBS scene to YouTube Live separately
A looping source supplies video playback; the scene combines sources into the output, and OBS must still encode and send that output to YouTube. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the Live Control Room and stream connection. YouTube says it can detect encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes live streams into formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions.

Choose settings your upload can sustain
YouTube recommends choosing quality based on a reliable upload connection, testing with representative audio and video before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. The following are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimum requirements; the page was accessed October 3, 2026:

YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of 4 seconds. Its RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Treat these as encoder guidance for the specified context, not as guarantees that a particular connection can sustain the stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring OBS, since platform controls and recommendations can change.
Test before the public stream
- Preview the full demo and verify that it repeats or advances through the list as intended.
- Play representative video and audio, and confirm that the stream output includes both at the intended levels.
- Use a connection speed test and a test stream to check that the upload remains reliable at your chosen output settings.
- During the live event, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and review any messages.
Check channel eligibility and demo rights
YouTube’s live-streaming overview says channels must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; YouTube may restrict live streaming. Recheck that help page for current eligibility and policy details.

Before looping a product demo, make sure you have permission to use every part of it in a live stream, including music, footage, voice-over, product images, and other third-party material. A video playing from a local file does not make its contents exempt from YouTube’s rules.

Common problems and fixes
- The video stops at the end. In Media Source properties, turn on Loop. For a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist.
- The VLC Video source is missing or cannot load its playlist. Install VLC and confirm its bitness matches OBS; the OBS documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist plays once and ends. Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties.
- The files play in an unexpected order. Arrange them in the source’s playlist and check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- The demo restarts after hiding and showing the source. Review the source’s visibility behavior. Media Source restarts on activation by default; VLC Video stops when hidden and restarts when visible by default.
- The demo is covered by graphics. Reorder sources in the Sources panel or reposition overlays so the product remains visible.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems. Test the stream, review YouTube’s encoder guidance and messages, and choose a rate the actual upload connection can sustain.
