To change a clip’s speed in OBS, open the selected Media Source properties and adjust Speed. OBS documents a range of 1% (0.01x) to 200% (2x), with 100% as the default. To repeat one video after it finishes, enable Loop; that is separate from the option that restarts playback when the source becomes active.
Change a Media Source’s playback speed
- In OBS, open the scene that should show the video. Add a Media Source or select the existing one, then open its properties.
- Select the local media file you want to play.
- Set Speed to the desired percentage. The OBS Project documents the range as 1% (0.01x) through 200% (2x); 100% is normal speed. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Enable Loop if the single file should play again after it ends. OBS documents this option as off by default.
- Leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled only if you want the video to start over when the source becomes visible in the current scene. OBS documents this option as on by default. It is not the setting that continuously loops a file.
- Preview the scene and check both video and audio at the chosen speed before going live. Playback can vary with the media file and system, so confirm the result in your own setup.
Loop one video or loop a playlist?

For a single clip, the built-in Media Source and its Loop option are the straightforward fit. Choose VLC Video when you need playlist behavior and have VLC installed. The options are described in the OBS Project documentation.

Playback speed is not stream quality
Media Source Speed changes how quickly the local file plays inside OBS. It does not set the YouTube stream’s bitrate, resolution, or latency. Configure the encoder workflow separately. YouTube recommends selecting encoder quality that suits a reliable connection, testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Do not assume that changing playback speed preserves pitch or produces identical results with every codec and system; the cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish those guarantees. Interface placement may also differ by OBS version, so use the properties for the selected source in your installed version.

Troubleshooting playback and looping
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. Restart-on-activation does not make a file loop continuously.
- The clip unexpectedly starts over when changing scenes: Check whether Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled. Disable it if the clip should continue from its existing position when it becomes visible again.
- A playlist will not repeat: Confirm you added a VLC Video source and enabled Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for that source type.
- The speed change seems to affect stream quality: Check the encoder settings separately. Media Source Speed controls local playback rate, not the outgoing YouTube bitrate or resolution.
- Audio or video behaves unexpectedly at a non-default speed: Preview the file at the selected setting before streaming. The official documentation does not promise identical playback behavior across all media files and systems.
