Use OBS’s Media Source for one supported local media file; use its VLC Video source for a playlist of multiple items. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear in OBS. Neither choice, by itself, guarantees that a YouTube Live playback URL will stay valid or play continuously. The right setup depends on whether you are playing local files, testing a network URL, or sending your own broadcast to YouTube.
Choose the source that matches the job
| Your goal | OBS choice | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Play one supported media file | Media Source | OBS documents this source for supported media files, with playback controls such as looping and restarting. Its documentation does not establish support for arbitrary YouTube watch-page URLs. |
| Play several items in sequence or loop a list | VLC Video | It supports multiple playlist items, looping and optional shuffle. VLC must be installed; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. |
| Send your own program to YouTube Live | OBS as an encoder | This is a broadcast-ingest workflow, not a method for loading a YouTube playback URL as a source. |
| Send an HLS feed to YouTube | An HLS-capable encoder configured for YouTube | YouTube’s HLS requirements govern an outgoing feed. They do not make a YouTube playback playlist a stable OBS source. |
OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video for Windows, macOS and Linux. Check the labels in your installed OBS version, since the interface can change. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Set up one local file with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the file should play. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, select the local file. Enable Loop if the file should repeat. Use the restart option if you need playback to begin at the start when the source becomes active.
- Confirm the source is visible and playing in the preview. If it stops when hidden, keep it active in the scene or adjust its playback behavior in the source properties.
- Test a full repeat before relying on it for a continuous program. A local file repeating in OBS is different from a stream whose network URL may expire or go offline.
OBS’s documented Media Source formats and controls apply to supported media files; they do not establish that pasting a YouTube watch URL into the source will work.

Build a multi-item list with VLC Video
- Install VLC before opening OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, install the 64-bit VLC build. Restart OBS if VLC Video does not appear in the source menu.
- In the target scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Add the local media files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable playlist looping to repeat the list. Enable shuffle only if a changing order is intended; leave it off for a fixed sequence.
- Play through the list and check transitions, audio and the end-of-list behavior. If using a network or live entry rather than local files, test that exact URL and your installed OBS/VLC versions independently.
The documented playlist controls manage items and playback order; they do not promise that a live URL remains available, that an ended broadcast restarts, or that an expiring manifest renews automatically. Avoid treating an extracted internal YouTube media manifest as a permanent public URL.

Do not confuse YouTube playback with broadcast ingest
A YouTube Live playback address is for viewing a broadcast. OBS’s encoder workflow sends an outgoing feed to YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions describe the latter: segments must be 1–4 seconds, use TS format, and be delivered in a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; HTTPS POST or PUT is required. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. These are ingest requirements, not instructions for turning a YouTube watch URL into a playlist item. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
If you are creating the store’s own live broadcast
YouTube identifies OBS as an encoder option. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, and YouTube requires a verified channel without live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Stream privacy can be public, private or unlisted. Use YouTube’s current setup screens because availability and labels may vary by account.

- VLC for Kindle plays most local video and audio files, as well as network streams (including adaptive streaming), like the desktop version of VLC.
- VLC for Kindle has a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
- VLC has support for multi-track audio and subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments, hardware acceleration and gestures to control volume.
- It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library.
- Enable live streaming for the channel and complete any verification or waiting period YouTube requires. Review YouTube’s live-streaming prerequisites.
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers stream configuration.
- Choose the appropriate visibility setting, configure OBS’s broadcast output, then start streaming from OBS and verify the incoming feed in YouTube Studio before promoting the stream.
The encoder setup is separate from the media-source choice: Media Source or VLC Video supplies playback inside OBS, while the stream key and encoder settings send the resulting program to YouTube. If you plan to rebroadcast another channel’s content, get permission and confirm you have the necessary rights first; the setup steps do not grant rebroadcast rights.
Troubleshoot playback and continuity
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check the source menu again.
- A local file will not play: Confirm it is a supported media format and that the file is accessible at the selected path. Re-select it in the source properties and preview playback.
- A file plays once but does not repeat: Check the Media Source’s loop control, or enable looping in the VLC Video playlist properties.
- Playlist order changes unexpectedly: Turn off shuffle and arrange the items in the intended order.
- A network/live entry fails or stops: Test the exact URL separately with your installed versions. The official OBS documentation does not guarantee YouTube watch URLs or expiring manifests as continuous playlist items; the broadcast may have ended, the URL may no longer be valid, or network conditions may have changed.
- OBS is not sending a broadcast: Check that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled, that the correct stream key is configured, and that the feed is started from the encoder. Keep the key private.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS running on a home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The service plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
