OBS Media Source Hardware Decoding: Should You Enable It for YouTube Loops?

OBS Media Source hardware decoding is optional and does not control looping. Leave it off unless testing on your system shows a reliable benefit.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Usually, leave “Use hardware decoding when available” off initially. It is optional, off by default in OBS’s documented Media Source settings, and only applies to certain files when your GPU has a suitable built-in decoder. It is not the setting that makes a video repeat: enable Loop separately.

What the hardware-decoding option does

In a regular OBS Media Source, hardware decoding concerns playback of the local video file. OBS describes the option as using the GPU for certain file types when the GPU has the appropriate built-in hardware decoder. An extension such as MP4 or MKV does not, by itself, establish that a particular encoded file will use hardware decoding; OBS’s guide does not provide a detailed codec, GPU, and driver compatibility matrix.

The documented default for Use hardware decoding when available is Off. If the file already plays smoothly and your system has no relevant resource or playback problem, there is no source-based reason to change it.

Hardware decoding is not looping or stream encoding

To repeat a local video, use Loop

The Loop property controls whether the file plays again after playback completes. It is separate from hardware decoding and is also documented as Off by default. For a single local file, use the regular Media Source’s Loop setting; installing VLC is not necessary just to repeat that file.

To encode the outgoing stream, use the encoder settings

Hardware decoding processes an input file for playback. Hardware encoding is a separate OBS output setting for the outgoing stream or recording. OBS says hardware encoders use a specialized GPU component and can take work off the CPU, but that is not a benchmark or performance claim about Media Source decoding.

YouTube transcoding does not decide the checkbox

YouTube transcodes streams for delivery, including the source feed, according to OBS’s transcoding guidance. That describes what happens on YouTube’s side; it does not require OBS to hardware-decode a local Media Source.

Check that you are using a local Media Source

These steps apply when OBS plays a video file from your computer. OBS documents Media Source support for video extensions including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm, as well as audio formats including .mp3, .aac, .ogg, and .wav. Support for an extension does not guarantee that the hardware-decoding option applies to every file in that format.

If you instead mean capturing or embedding a YouTube webpage, that is a different OBS source path; Media Source hardware-decoding advice for a local file does not settle the behavior of browser capture. OBS also documents a separate VLC Video source for playlists. VLC must be installed to use that source, and its Loop Playlist option is documented as On by default.

How to decide on your system

  1. Confirm the source and loop behavior. Make sure OBS is playing the intended local file in a Media Source and that Loop is enabled. Verify it starts again after reaching the end.
  2. Establish a baseline. With hardware decoding off, use the same clip, scene, and stream or recording conditions you normally use. Observe whether playback stays smooth across loop boundaries and note CPU load, GPU load, and any decoder activity your system exposes.
  3. Change only the decoding option. Turn on Use hardware decoding when available for that Media Source, then repeat the comparison under the same conditions.
  4. Keep the reliable state. Compare smooth playback and repeated loop boundaries, resource behavior, and stability. If enabling the option does not help, or introduces a problem, turn it off again. Do not infer a universal CPU reduction, quality improvement, or drop-frame fix from the label.

This is a practical, machine-specific comparison, not a published OBS benchmark. The cited OBS guide does not quantify the effect for a looping Media Source. OBS also cautions that meeting system requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Common problems and what to check

  • The video stops at the end. Check the Media Source’s Loop property. Hardware decoding does not make a file repeat.
  • Turning decoding on does not change playback or CPU load. The file may not be among the types supported by the GPU’s built-in decoder, or the actual system may show no meaningful difference. The OBS guide does not specify codec-by-codec compatibility or promise a resource reduction.
  • Playback becomes less reliable with decoding enabled. Compare again with it off using the same file and scene; keep the state that plays reliably on your machine.
  • The source is a YouTube page rather than a file. Recheck which OBS source you added. Advice for a local Media Source does not directly apply to an embedded or captured webpage.
  • You are trying to reduce load from the outgoing stream. Review the stream encoder separately. Hardware encoding and Media Source hardware decoding do different jobs, so changing one is not a test of the other.
