Does changing an OBS scene collection stop a YouTube stream?
Not by itself, according to the OBS documentation. A Scene Collection contains scenes, sources, and Global Audio Sources; OBS explicitly says, “Scene Collections do not store output settings. That does not rule out an interruption coinciding with a switch. The timing is a useful clue, not proof of cause. Check what OBS reported at the time: whether it stopped sending, showed dropped frames or disconnections, or indicated rendering or encoding overload.

1. Confirm the active Profile and stream configuration
Before changing settings, note which OBS Profile is active. Verify its streaming service, server, and stream key or connected account. A scene-collection change is not documented as changing those output settings, but confirming the active Profile helps rule out an unexpected configuration change. 2. Look for network symptoms
OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as evidence of a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. Check OBS’s connection status and logs around the interruption. If they point to dropped frames or disconnections, investigate the network path rather than treating the collection change as a confirmed cause. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
3. Check rendering and encoding performance
Complex scenes and large collections can require more system resources. Some sources may consume resources even when they are not visible. If OBS performance worsens during a switch, note any rendering or encoding overload and consider reducing resource-heavy sources or splitting a large collection into more focused collections. Test collection changes before the broadcast
Reproduce the workflow before relying on it during a public stream. OBS recommends testing scenes and stream operation in advance.

- Record the starting state. Note the active Profile and Scene Collection, plus the selected service and server. Do not expose or share your stream key.
- Test the intended switch. With the stream configured for a safe test, change to the collection you plan to use and watch OBS’s connection and performance indicators.
- Check logs and status at the moment of any interruption. Determine whether OBS reports a connection problem, dropped frames, or rendering or encoding overload.
- Change one thing at a time. If you adjust a Profile, network setting, or collection’s sources, repeat the test before making another change. That makes it easier to identify what affected the result.
- Confirm the final setup before going public. Verify the intended Profile and collection are active and that OBS is sending successfully.

OBS shows dropped frames or intermittent disconnections
Follow the network branch. OBS recommends checking the selected server and bitrate, and testing another service when appropriate to help identify whether a problem is service-specific. Its guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; this is general guidance, not a guarantee that a particular bitrate will work for every service or connection. Leave sufficient stable upload capacity for the stream rather than relying on a peak speed test alone.

- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS identifies Wi-Fi as a possible source of instability and recommends wired networking for streaming.
- Check the router, cable, network drivers, VPN, and security software for possible connection problems.
- If you test another server or service, change one variable at a time and compare OBS’s connection status.

OBS remains connected but performance degrades during the switch
Focus on rendering and encoding load. Reduce costly sources, including resource-heavy browser sources, and keep collections focused. A source can consume resources even when it is not visible, so inspect what each collection contains rather than only the scene currently on screen. The stream disconnects and OBS needs to recover
OBS has an automatic reconnect option in Advanced settings. Review it so OBS can attempt recovery after a connection interruption. Reconnect can help restore a connection; it does not prevent the underlying network or performance problem, and the available documentation does not guarantee that it preserves a particular YouTube live session.
