OBS Hardware Encoding Settings for a 24/7 Pre-Recorded YouTube Stream

Use a supported OBS hardware encoder, CBR, 2-second keyframes, and YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your codec and output. Learn how to test upload headroom and diagnose common issues.

For a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream in OBS, use a supported hardware encoder, set the streaming output to constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes to 2 seconds, and choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then test the actual feed and confirm that your upload connection has enough capacity to sustain it. These settings follow YouTube’s ingestion guidance; they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Recommended OBS streaming settings

Start in OBS at Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder—not the recording encoder. If Output Mode is set to Simple, switch to Advanced to expose the stream encoder controls. Labels and available choices can vary with the OBS build, operating system, and installed hardware.

Setting What to use Why it matters
Encoder A supported hardware encoder available in your OBS installation, such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, or Apple VideoToolbox where compatible Hardware encoding moves video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. Availability depends on the computer, GPU, operating system, and OBS build.
Rate control CBR YouTube specifies constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds; OBS NVENC examples also use 2 seconds.
Bitrate Use YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate There is no single correct bitrate for every output combination.
Audio AAC or MP3; YouTube’s guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo Match the live-ingestion guidance rather than a recording preset.
Video format Progressive scan, square pixels; Rec. 709 for SDR These are among YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS video requirements.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingestion, but a codec should only be selected if both OBS and the installed encoder actually expose and support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. The available codec options are hardware- and software-dependent; do not assume every OBS installation can send every listed codec.

Choose the bitrate for your output

YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube Help technical recommendations, not independent benchmarks or guarantees of stream stability. Check YouTube’s current table when setting up, because platform guidance can change.

720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps

These examples cover common SDR settings; use YouTube’s bitrate table for other resolutions and frame rates. YouTube lists support for up to 60 fps. Set the bitrate in OBS’s streaming-output controls to the value for your chosen combination. If the encoder menu does not offer the desired codec, choose an available supported codec and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation instead.

Configure the hardware encoder in OBS

  1. Check encoder availability. Open Settings > Output, select Advanced output mode if needed, and inspect the streaming encoder menu. Choose a supported hardware option available on this machine. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox options subject to platform compatibility. OBS generally advises using NVENC or AMF when the system has a corresponding NVIDIA or AMD GPU rather than defaulting to Intel QSV.
  2. Set the stream to CBR. In the streaming encoder controls, choose CBR for rate control. Set the bitrate using YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  3. Set keyframes to 2 seconds. Enter 2 for the keyframe interval. YouTube’s stated maximum is 4 seconds.
  4. Check audio and video format. Use an audio format YouTube lists for ingest (AAC or MP3) and its listed 128 Kbps stereo guidance. Use progressive video and square pixels; for SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709.
  5. Keep the streaming and recording encoders distinct. Configure these values under the streaming output. A recording profile may use different controls for a different goal.
  6. Connect OBS to the intended YouTube live stream. Use the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder workflow. A stream key is a credential: keep it private and do not publish it in a scene, screenshot, or public chat.

Keep live settings separate from recording settings

OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide uses recording-oriented examples; for example, its NVENC recording guidance uses constant-QP (CQP). YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance calls for CBR. Do not copy a recording rate-control setting into the streaming output without checking the requirements for the live feed. OBS’s recording presets are examples for recording, not universal prescriptions for continuous live streaming.

Check upload capacity and test the real feed

A bitrate that matches YouTube’s table still needs a connection that can sustain it. YouTube recommends allowing 20% upload headroom and accounting for primary and backup feeds if both are in use. Other devices sharing the connection and interruptions in service can affect continuity.

  • Preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
  • Monitor stream health and YouTube’s messages during the test and after going live.
  • For a 24/7 run, assess the whole setup—not only the encoder: the computer, power, network, and OBS process must remain available. YouTube’s recommended settings do not establish that a particular configuration will stay online continuously.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
The desired hardware encoder is missing from OBS Hardware or platform compatibility, OBS build, or driver availability Confirm the encoder is supported by the computer and operating system, and check which choices the installed OBS build actually exposes. Use another supported encoder if available rather than assuming an unavailable option can be enabled by changing bitrate settings.
YouTube reports an ingest or stream-format issue Rate control, keyframe interval, codec, or stream destination Verify CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (and no more than 4 seconds), a supported codec, and the correct YouTube stream URL and key.
The stream health is poor or the feed disconnects Upload capacity, shared network use, or connection disruption Check sustained outbound capacity against the stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; account for any backup feed and reduce competing network use. Test again and watch Live Control Room health messages.
The live stream looks or sounds wrong despite connecting Output format, audio configuration, or differences between the test and real content Check progressive video, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, and an audio option and bitrate consistent with YouTube’s guidance. Retest with representative movement and audio.
Changing recording quality does not fix the live output Recording and streaming outputs use separate settings Return to the streaming encoder controls under Output and verify CBR and the live bitrate. Do not assume an OBS recording preset configures YouTube ingest.

Or let it run in the cloud

The OBS method requires a computer running the encoder and a connection capable of sustaining the feed. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud loop means nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it does not re-encode. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasts. Learn about StreamNeo. To try it, start your free day.
