For a low-CPU YouTube stream in OBS, first try a compatible hardware encoder—NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync—because it shifts encoding work off the CPU. If you need x264, choose a faster preset such as veryfast or, if necessary, ultrafast; faster presets use less CPU but can reduce compression efficiency at the same bitrate. For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then choose a codec- and resolution-specific bitrate and test the real workload before relying on it around the clock.
Choose an encoder before changing the preset
In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the streaming encoder options. The exact labels depend on your hardware, operating system, drivers, and OBS build. If a supported hardware encoder is available, test it first when CPU usage is the problem.

Hardware encoding: NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync
OBS describes hardware encoding as moving encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component. Select the option that matches hardware your system supports: NVENC for supported NVIDIA hardware, AMF for supported AMD hardware, or Quick Sync for supported Intel graphics. OBS notes that users with NVIDIA or AMD GPUs generally use NVENC or AMF rather than Quick Sync. Availability and capability vary by hardware generation and configuration; the encoder name alone does not establish that a particular system can sustain your chosen output.
OBS explains the general hardware-encoding approach in its Hardware Encoding guide. Check that your installed OBS version, operating system, GPU or integrated graphics, and drivers expose the encoder before planning around it.

x264: use the fastest acceptable preset
x264 is software encoding and uses CPU resources. Its presets run from ultrafast through progressively slower options to placebo. Faster presets require less processing but generally compress less efficiently: at a fixed bitrate, image quality may be lower than with a slower preset. If you must use x264, start with veryfast as a practical point to test, then use a faster option such as ultrafast if CPU load remains too high. Keep the fastest setting that gives acceptable picture quality and remains stable at your actual resolution and frame rate.
veryfast appears as an example in OBS’s recording guide, not as a universal prescription for live streaming. The right choice depends on the machine and content. OBS’s older Streaming with x264 explanation describes the trade-off between encoding time and bandwidth; it does not promise equal quality for every preset or setup.

Set YouTube’s output requirements
These recommendations concern YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube’s official live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Match the codec and target settings to the options your OBS encoder actually offers.

- Rate control: use CBR (constant bitrate) for YouTube ingest.
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: use YouTube’s current recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not carry a number across targets without checking the relevant row of the table.
In OBS, these controls are usually in Settings → Output when Output Mode is set to Advanced; labels and placement can vary with the selected encoder and OBS version. Set the video resolution and frame rate under Settings → Video, then verify the streaming encoder’s rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. If an encoder exposes a keyframe field in frames rather than seconds, use its documented units and confirm the resulting interval.

Use the bitrate for the actual target
YouTube’s current H.264 table lists 6 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those figures are specific to those H.264 targets; H.265 and AV1 recommendations differ. Refer to YouTube’s table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send, since platform guidance may change.
Resolution and frame rate should suit the content and the system’s capacity. A static image or slow-moving scene can impose a different encoding workload from video with frequent movement, but that does not remove the need to meet YouTube’s ingest settings. Also make sure the available upload connection can sustain the configured stream; encoder choice cannot compensate for insufficient network capacity.

Test before leaving the stream on
A preset that works briefly is not proof that a machine can run continuously. OBS and YouTube do not specify one configuration guaranteed to handle every 24/7 workload. Validate the exact combination of encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, content, cooling, and network you plan to use.

- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using representative footage, including the expected motion and audio. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
- Watch OBS’s performance indicators and YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test runs. Check for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, and YouTube warnings; identify whether the issue is encoding, network delivery, or ingest configuration before changing settings.
- Run the test long enough to expose the workload you expect in use, and check that the system remains stable. Re-test after changing encoder, preset, bitrate, resolution, or frame rate.
YouTube’s testing guidance is in its encoder settings page. It calls for testing representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health; it does not establish a universal test duration or guarantee long-term stability.
Troubleshoot high CPU or an unhealthy stream
- CPU remains high with x264: move to a faster preset, reduce output resolution or frame rate if appropriate, or test a compatible hardware encoder. A faster x264 preset trades compression efficiency for lower CPU demand.
- The hardware encoder is missing: confirm that the machine’s GPU or integrated graphics, drivers, operating system, and OBS build support it. If it is not available, use x264 and test a faster preset rather than assuming an unsupported encoder can be enabled.
- Picture quality is poor at the selected bitrate: verify the bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. A faster x264 preset may also compress less efficiently at the same bitrate.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem: verify CBR, the codec, the configured bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), then test again and monitor YouTube’s messages.
- The stream degrades after running for a while: check OBS and YouTube indicators during a representative extended test. Heat, system configuration, content complexity, and network capacity can affect sustained operation; no preset alone guarantees a 24/7 run.
