OBS Dropped Frames on YouTube Live: Network or Encoding Issue?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check View → Stats in OBS before changing settings. If Dropped Frames (Network) is rising, the stream is struggling to reach YouTube at the configured bitrate. If frames missed due to rendering lag or an encoding-overloaded warning is rising instead, the bottleneck is more likely your computer’s local rendering or encoding workload. The right fix depends on which signal you see.

How to tell whether the problem is network or encoding

  1. In OBS Studio, open View → Stats while streaming.
  2. Watch Dropped Frames (Network), frames missed due to rendering lag, and any encoding-overloaded warning. Note which counter or warning changes when the picture stutters.
  3. Use that signal to choose the troubleshooting path below. A viewer’s buffering alone does not prove OBS is dropping frames; buffering can happen even when OBS reports no dropped frames.

OBS describes network dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Rendering lag and encoding overload point instead to OBS having difficulty processing the scene or video locally. There is no established percentage showing how often one cause is responsible, so diagnose your own stream rather than assuming one is more common.

OBS signal Likely bottleneck First troubleshooting target
Dropped Frames (Network) rises Delivery from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server Stable upload capacity, connection quality, competing uploads, and configured bitrate
Frames missed due to rendering lag rise Local scene rendering, often involving GPU workload Game load, scene complexity, sources, and output resolution or frame rate
OBS reports encoding overload Local encoding workload Reduce the work required to encode, including output settings and competing system load

If OBS shows network dropped frames

Network drops mean the configured stream is not being delivered consistently. A speed test can be useful, but a single upload result does not establish that the route to YouTube will remain stable throughout a live stream. OBS says connection problems are typically outside OBS Studio’s control.

Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity

Check your OBS video bitrate against the upload capacity that is reliably available while streaming—not your advertised download speed. OBS’s connection guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point for troubleshooting. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: other household traffic, network variation, and YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations also matter.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the network counter keeps rising, reduce the configured bitrate and observe whether the counter settles. OBS also describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as an option, marked beta in its guide; it can lower video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.

Test the connection path

  • Prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If your current connection is wireless, test with a wired connection before changing unrelated settings. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option if you need a replacement cable, but a cable alone cannot fix local encoding overload, ISP congestion, or a YouTube ingest issue.
  • Pause other uploads. Check whether another person, device, backup, or application is using upload capacity during the stream.
  • Check VPNs and network-prioritizing software. OBS lists VPNs and bundled network software among possible factors. Test without them if you can do so safely and appropriately.
  • Consider the full network path. A faulty cable or other hardware issue, routing changes, or congestion beyond your home network can affect delivery. If the problem persists after local checks, contact your ISP; a provider change is not a guaranteed fix.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings against your stream

YouTube’s recommendations are specific to resolution, frame rate, and codec. For a 1080p60 stream, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are YouTube Help recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication year. They are not proof that your connection can sustain the stream or that a mismatch caused OBS’s network counter to rise.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency. Check the settings for your selected encoder and stream format rather than applying one bitrate figure to every codec or resolution.

  • Compare OBS’s configured video bitrate with both the YouTube recommendation for your chosen codec and the stable upload capacity available to the stream.
  • Use YouTube’s stream health indicator during the broadcast, not only a pre-stream speed test.
  • Before an important broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the real event. A static test image may not reveal the same behavior as a busy scene or moving video.

If OBS shows rendering lag or encoding overload

These signals call for reducing local workload, not simply changing the internet connection. OBS needs GPU resources to compose and render scenes, and a demanding game or scene can compete with streaming work.

Reduce competing workload first

  • Cap an uncapped game frame rate so the game does not consume all available GPU capacity.
  • Lower demanding in-game graphics settings if the game is using too much of the system’s resources.
  • Simplify OBS scenes. Complex scenes, filters, and browser sources can add rendering work; disable or reduce sources and effects that are not essential.
  • If the problem continues, lower the stream’s output resolution or frame rate and check whether the rendering or encoding signal improves.

Change one relevant setting at a time and watch the corresponding Stats indicator. Reducing bitrate primarily targets a connection that cannot sustain delivery; reducing game, scene, or output workload targets local rendering or encoding. A symptom such as a choppy picture does not identify the cause by itself.

Test before the next broadcast

  1. Run a private or otherwise low-stakes test using the intended OBS scene, audio, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  2. Include motion and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health.
  3. If network drops rise, test a wired connection, pause competing uploads, and lower bitrate as needed. If rendering lag or encoding overload rises, reduce local workload and output demands.
  4. Repeat the test after each meaningful adjustment so you can tell which change affected the failing signal.

Common symptoms and what to try

  • Network drops rise only when someone else uploads: pause or reschedule the competing upload, then retest the stream.
  • Network drops occur on Wi-Fi but not on Ethernet: use the wired connection for streaming and investigate the wireless path if you need it for other uses.
  • Network drops continue after lowering bitrate: check VPN or network software, cables and other local hardware, and contact your ISP about persistent upload or routing issues.
  • Rendering lag appears while a game runs: cap the game’s frame rate, lower its graphics settings, or simplify the OBS scene.
  • Encoding overload appears after increasing resolution or frame rate: reduce output demands and retest before increasing them again.
  • Viewers report buffering but OBS counters remain stable: do not assume OBS encoding overload; check YouTube stream health and consider that buffering may occur downstream of OBS.
