If your OBS stream keeps disconnecting from YouTube, first check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator, then compare your bitrate with your stable upload capacity. During a test stream, check YouTube’s stream health for messages about bitrate, keyframes, codec, or incoming video. These clues help distinguish an unstable network path from an encoder or configuration problem; a disconnect alone does not identify the cause.
Start with OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while streaming. OBS explains that dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If the counter rises and the indicator turns yellow or red, the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. That points to the connection between your computer and the ingest server; it does not by itself prove OBS is defective. The OBS Project says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames,” in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30.
Check the message in YouTube Live Control Room at the same time. YouTube’s stream-health messages can flag excessive bitrate, a long keyframe interval, unsupported video configuration, or insufficient incoming video. OBS also notes that viewers can experience buffering even when the streamer is not dropping frames; that can indicate a playback or viewer-network issue rather than an encoder-to-ingest disconnect. Compare both sets of indicators before changing settings.
Check bitrate against your connection and output
OBS suggests lowering the video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that only as an initial estimate: a speed test does not guarantee that your connection can sustain the same upload rate during a stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality your connection can reliably deliver. Match the target to your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations below are technical settings, not measurements of typical upload speeds or evidence about how often streams disconnect. The YouTube Help page does not display a publication date; it was accessed and verified on 2026-10-03.
| Output | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These values come from YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. If your stable upload capacity cannot support the recommendation for your chosen output, reduce the bitrate or lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. A lower, sustainable bitrate is generally more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames.
Match OBS output to YouTube’s encoder requirements
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, up to 60 fps. Check OBS’s output settings against the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval you intend to send. A mismatch can produce stream-health warnings even if the network is stable.

YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and motion similar to the planned program. A static scene is not a representative test for a stream with frequent movement or complex audio/video. Start a test, monitor stream health in Live Control Room, and note any messages during the event. Google’s LiveStream health-status reference, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, describes warnings including excessive bitrate, long keyframe intervals, unsupported video configuration, and insufficient incoming video.
- If OBS dropped frames rise while the YouTube message points to bitrate, reduce bitrate or output demands and test again.
- If YouTube flags keyframes or codec configuration, correct the encoder settings rather than changing network hardware first.
- If there are no OBS dropped frames but viewers report buffering, investigate playback conditions separately from the stream’s connection to YouTube.
Isolate server, network settings, and software
Try an alternate ingest server
If the streaming service offers another server, test it and compare the OBS counter and YouTube stream health. OBS connects directly to the streaming platform; the OBS Project does not provide the stream server. An alternate server test can help determine whether the route to the current ingest point is involved.

Check OBS network options
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and confirm Bind to IP is set to Default. OBS lists IPv4 Only as a diagnostic setting; try it to see whether behavior changes, and return to IPv4 and IPv6 if it does not. On Windows, test the available network optimization and TCP pacing options. Change one setting at a time and compare results so you can identify which change mattered.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower the bitrate during congestion and reduce dropped frames. It does not fix the underlying connection problem, and it reduces stream quality while active.

Check Wi-Fi and the physical network path
OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection and compare the dropped-frames counter and stream-health messages. This is a diagnostic option, not a universal requirement or a guaranteed fix.
Other possible fault points include the modem or router, cables, network card, switches, and extenders. Isolate suspected equipment where practical; replace a cable only if it appears faulty or a test implicates it. If the problem persists or you are unsure about changing equipment, contact your ISP.

| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise and the indicator is yellow or red | Lower bitrate to a level your connection can sustain; check the route, server, and wired-versus-Wi-Fi behavior. |
| YouTube reports excessive bitrate | Reduce OBS bitrate and verify it against the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity. |
| YouTube reports a long keyframe interval or configuration issue | Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, not more than 4 seconds; check codec and output settings. |
| YouTube reports insufficient incoming video | Check that OBS is sending the expected video and that the stream is not being interrupted; compare the message with OBS’s connection status. |
| VPN or network software is active | Run a controlled test with the VPN off or network optimizer isolated; restore security protection and configure an OBS exception if needed. |
| Viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames | Distinguish viewer playback or network problems from an encoder-to-ingest disconnect; use YouTube stream health as a separate check. |
