Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To reduce OBS disconnects during a YouTube livestream, enable automatic reconnect in Settings → Advanced, set a bitrate your connection can sustain, and check the network path between your computer and YouTube. Reconnect helps OBS recover from interruptions; it cannot fix an unstable internet connection, a failing computer, or a YouTube-side problem.
First identify what actually stopped
An ended broadcast does not always mean OBS stopped. Check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room soon after an interruption, and preserve the OBS log covering that time.

- OBS closed or crashed: investigate the application or computer, rather than treating it as only a network disconnect.
- OBS is open but reports reconnecting or dropped frames: investigate the network path to the remote ingest server. The OBS Project says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
- OBS output remains active but the YouTube event ended: check the event’s status and settings in Live Control Room. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern whether an encoder can start or stop a stream; they are not network-recovery features (Manage live stream settings).
These checks separate an OBS crash, a connection interruption, and a YouTube event ending—different problems that need different fixes.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Enable OBS automatic reconnect
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find the network or reconnect options and confirm that Automatically Reconnect is enabled. OBS documents automatic reconnect in its overview guide (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
- Set retry options for the kind of brief interruption you expect, without assuming retries occur at a fixed interval. OBS’s version 32.2.2 API reference says the retry count is configurable and the wait doubles after each retry for outputs that support reconnect (OBS Output API Reference).
Reconnect is a recovery mechanism, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting. It cannot restore service while the internet link, computer, encoder output, or YouTube ingest is unavailable, and retries may eventually be exhausted.

Make the outgoing stream sustainable
Choose encoder settings for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec using YouTube’s recommendations, then make sure your stable upload capacity can support the bitrate. A speed test and a test stream are more useful than relying on a peak upload number alone. YouTube’s bitrate tables differ by codec and video settings (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
For YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, the published table lists:
Rank #2
- AMD Ryzen 7 8700F 4.1GHz (5GHz Turbo Boost) CPU Processor | 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD – Up to 30x Faster Than Traditional HDD | High-Performance Air Cooler
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB GDDR7 Graphics Card (Brand may vary) | 16GB DDR5 RAM 6000 Non-RGB Gaming Memory with Heat Spreader | Windows 11 Home
- WI-FI 5 802.11ac | No Bloatware | Graphic output options include 1 x HDMI, and 1 x Display Port Promised, Additional Ports may vary | USB Ports Including 2.0, 3.0, and 3.2 Gen1 Ports | HD Audio & Mic | Free Gaming Keyboard & Mouse
- High-Performance Air Cooler: Maximum Airflow & ARGB Fans | Skytech Shadow 5 Gaming Case with Tempered Glass, Black | 1 Year Warranty on Parts and Labor | Free Technical Support | Assembled in the USA
- This powerful gaming PC is capable of running all your favorite games such as Elden Ring Nightreign, Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Helldivers 2, Diablo IV, Starfield, Valorant, Counter-Strike 2, Forza Horizon 5, Resident Evil 9, Alan Wake 2, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, God of War Ragnarök, Overwatch 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, Marvel's Spider-Man, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,, more at Ultra settings, detailed 1080p Full HD resolution, and smooth 60+ FPS gameplay.
| Video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the stated H.264 settings, not universal guarantees or targets that every connection can sustain. Do not apply them unchanged to another codec, resolution, or frame rate. If your stable upload capacity cannot handle the chosen bitrate, lower the bitrate and test. Reducing bitrate may mean a quality trade-off; changing resolution or frame rate also changes the stream’s data demands.
Check the connection between your computer and YouTube
Prefer a wired local connection where practical
OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting). Ethernet can avoid instability on the local Wi-Fi link, but it does not control your ISP’s network or YouTube’s availability. If you use Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet before buying anything; a cable is relevant only if Wi-Fi or an existing cable is the problem.

Inspect the rest of the network path
- Check whether the router or modem is losing connectivity or restarting.
- Inspect the Ethernet cable and the computer’s network adapter; update network drivers when appropriate.
- Consider whether a VPN, security tool, or network-prioritization software is interfering with stream traffic. If you briefly disable security software as a diagnostic, restore it afterward; if it is confirmed as the cause, use an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
Change one thing at a time and observe whether the problem recurs. This makes it easier to identify whether the fault is local Wi-Fi, equipment, software, or an upstream connection.
Use advanced OBS options selectively
OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, as well as dynamic bitrate adjustment. These are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate can reduce stream quality as it adapts to connection conditions; it does not repair the underlying network problem. Try an advanced option only when it fits your platform and diagnosis, and compare results with a test stream rather than enabling settings indiscriminately.

Test before leaving a stream unattended
- Start a test stream before relying on the setup for a long broadcast. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and stream before going live.
- Check the preview, stream-health messages, and audio and video quality; confirm that viewers can access the intended watch page.
- If you record locally, verify that the recording file continues to grow. YouTube also recommends checking the local archive file as part of stream monitoring (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).
- If your production uses a backup encoder, test failover deliberately. YouTube’s guidance describes checking a backup encoder by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet cable; do not assume a backup is ready until you have tested it (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).
A single computer is simpler to operate. A backup encoder adds setup and monitoring work, and is an operational choice rather than a requirement for every creator.
Account for YouTube’s stream and archive behavior
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour event will be archived in full. Check YouTube’s current guidance and plan how you will handle stream restarts and archive segments for a continuous channel (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
