Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by checking the settings that define the stream OBS sends—not by resetting all of OBS. Compare the encoder and codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, and YouTube service and stream-key selection. If OBS shows dropped frames or a red or yellow connection indicator, investigate the connection and bitrate first; if it does not, check format and YouTube setup before deciding what to change. A disconnect that begins after an encoder change is a clue, not proof of the cause.
What to check first
Write down what changed and what OBS reports before changing anything else. A useful diagnosis depends on details the symptom alone does not establish: OBS version, operating system, selected encoder, changed setting, exact error text, and whether dropped frames appear.

- Record the encoder name and the values you changed.
- Note whether OBS reports dropped frames or its connection indicator changes color.
- Copy the exact disconnect or connection error, and note whether YouTube Live Control Room receives the stream.
These observations separate three different paths: an unstable connection, an output format or bitrate mismatch, and a YouTube service, key, or broadcast-selection problem.
Compare OBS output settings with YouTube’s requirements
In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the streaming encoder and its active options. YouTube’s published guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; specifies CBR rate control; recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; and supports up to 60 fps. Confirm the codec, rate control, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single suitable bitrate for every stream.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Use the bitrate for the actual output format
For one example from YouTube’s table, 1080p at 60 fps has a recommended H.264 range with a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommendation; for AV1 or H.265, the table gives a 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommendation. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the rate.
If you changed only one encoder option, restore that option to a known compatible value rather than changing unrelated settings. If several values changed, compare them with YouTube’s guidance and adjust one at a time so you can identify which change affects the result.

Check YouTube service, stream key, and broadcast
In OBS, confirm that the service is YouTube RTMPS and that the selected stream key belongs to the intended YouTube event. In YouTube Live Control Room, check whether the broadcast is active and whether YouTube shows an ingest or format warning. The OBS guide to streaming to YouTube describes the service, key, and Live Control Room workflow; interface details may vary by OBS version.
This check matters even when the encoder settings look compatible: a correct output sent with the wrong key or to the wrong event will not reach the intended broadcast.

If OBS shows dropped frames, troubleshoot the connection
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect a stream. In that case, first try a lower bitrate that your stable upload connection can maintain, while staying within YouTube’s guidance for the chosen format.
OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate troubleshooting, not a universal target. Available upload speed can fluctuate, and YouTube’s format limits still apply. OBS also suggests testing another server or service and reviewing network settings or software that may affect the connection. Its dynamic bitrate option is a workaround when the underlying connection problem cannot be resolved; it may reduce stream quality and should not be treated as proof that the encoder was the cause.

Reset only what changed, then test
- Restore the recently changed encoder setting or settings to a known compatible configuration, using YouTube’s requirements for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Keep the other OBS settings unchanged. Apply one change at a time and test so the result points to a specific setting rather than a collection of simultaneous changes.
- Test with representative motion and audio, then check OBS’s connection status and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health before relying on the setup for a live broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
A full OBS preferences reset, profile deletion, or reinstall is not an established universal fix for this symptom. If the targeted checks do not resolve it, collect the OBS log and the exact error along with your OBS version, operating system, encoder, and changed values; those details are needed to distinguish a configuration issue from a connection or service problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock rather than troubleshoot a live OBS session, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.
