A full application crash is different from dropped frames or a stream disconnect, so changing YouTube’s bitrate or stream settings is not a supported first fix. The exact cause depends on your OBS version, operating system, source type, files, and crash report.
First, distinguish a crash from a stream problem
If OBS itself closes while opening or loading the playlist, investigate OBS, the source, the media, filters, or system resource pressure. OBS’s connection guide discusses dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network problems between your computer and the remote ingest server; those symptoms are not the same as OBS crashing during playlist loading. Before changing anything, note your OBS version and operating system, whether the playlist is a VLC Video Source or another source type, whether files are local or network-based, and which filters are applied to the source. Keep the crash report and regular OBS log if the problem continues; without them, the failure cannot be diagnosed with confidence.

Test a short playlist in a copied scene
- Make a copy of your scene collection and use that copy for diagnosis so you can restore the original setup.
- In the copied scene, reduce the playlist to a few files you know play correctly.
- Test the files individually, then add them back in small groups. If one file consistently triggers the crash, remove it from the playlist and test again.
- Check suspect files for invalid paths or files that no longer exist, especially if the playlist was assembled from older recordings or moved folders.

Temporarily remove filters from a VLC Video Source
If you use a VLC Video Source with a Video Delay (Async) filter, remove that filter temporarily in the copied scene and test track changes. A historical OBS issue report describes a crash while changing tracks in a VLC playlist with that filter. Simplify the scene to check resource pressure
Test with a smaller scene: temporarily remove or disable unrelated sources and expensive effects, then load the short playlist again. OBS notes that sources use resources even when they are not currently visible, and recommends limiting costly sources and keeping scene collections focused. Simplifying can help identify resource pressure, but OBS’s performance guidance does not prove that resource use is the cause of a particular crash. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting

If the minimal scene still crashes, add sources back gradually and record what changes the result. If it only crashes after restoring a particular source, filter, or playlist item, you have a more useful lead for further diagnosis.

Use the crash report to decide what to do next
If the crash persists after testing known-good files, removing suspect filters, and simplifying the scene, preserve the OBS crash report and regular log and ask for help through OBS’s official support channels. Include your OBS version, operating system, source type, filter list, whether files are local or network-based, and the smallest set of steps that reproduces the crash. Do not assume that reinstalling OBS, upgrading hardware, or changing YouTube stream settings is a universal fix; the available evidence does not establish any of those as a general remedy.

Overlays and FPS counters are among the software OBS identifies as possible sources of conflicts with game capture. That is worth checking if you also have a game-capture problem, but it does not establish the cause of a playlist-loading crash. OBS game capture troubleshooting
