YouTube’s live encoder settings specify constant bitrate encoding (CBR). Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your connection can sustain it and test the stream before leaving it unattended. A playlist does not have a documented exception to this guidance, and the official sources cited here do not provide a controlled long-duration CBR-versus-VBR test for 24/7 playlists.
CBR or VBR: which should you choose?
For OBS sending a live stream to YouTube, choose CBR. YouTube’s live encoder settings specify “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” That is the strongest destination-specific guidance for this choice.

CBR targets a steadier bitrate; VBR allows the bitrate to vary. A mostly static playlist may have different compression demands from fast-moving footage, but that fact alone does not override YouTube’s stated live-ingest setting. The cited official guidance neither says VBR is universally unsupported nor establishes that it necessarily causes failure. It also does not compare the two modes in a controlled, long-duration playlist test.
| Question | CBR | VBR | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube’s stated live encoding mode | Specified by YouTube | Not listed as the recommended live bitrate encoding mode on the cited settings page | Prefer CBR for an OBS-to-YouTube live stream. |
| Rate pattern | Targets a steadier bitrate | Allows bitrate to vary | Do not infer 24/7 reliability from the mode names alone. |
| Connection planning | Plan around a sustained target bitrate | Demand can vary with content and encoder implementation | Set a rate your connection can carry and test it. |
| Playlist-specific comparison | No dedicated long-duration comparison established by the cited official sources | No dedicated long-duration comparison established by the cited official sources | Use YouTube’s general live guidance rather than claiming a measured playlist winner. |
Choose a bitrate for your stream
Use YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually plan to send. Its H.264 recommendations include:

| H.264 live video setting | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection will sustain the stream. YouTube publishes separate values for AV1 and H.265; for example, its table recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 with those codecs. Check the table for your exact combination rather than transferring an H.264 figure to another codec.
Check stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak
OBS says the bitrate must fit both your stable upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting page gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as OBS guidance, not a universal engineering threshold: a single best-case speed-test result does not establish that your connection will hold the rate continuously.

If your stable capacity cannot support YouTube’s preferred recommendation, use a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that your connection can sustain, then test the actual stream. A higher target that repeatedly drops frames is not an improvement over a stable configuration.

Set up OBS for YouTube Live
- Choose the output settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Output Mode: Advanced if needed, then open the Streaming tab. Choose an encoder and set Rate Control to CBR. OBS labels and available encoder options can vary by version and hardware.
- Set the bitrate. Enter the bitrate that matches the YouTube recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, subject to what your connection can stably upload. Do not treat the service’s minimum as a target if you can sustain its recommended value.
- Set keyframes. In OBS’s streaming output settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Match video output to the bitrate plan. In Settings → Video, choose a base canvas and output resolution and a frame rate consistent with the stream profile for which you selected the bitrate. Changing resolution or frame rate changes which YouTube recommendation applies.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share screenshots that reveal it.
- Run a representative test. Start the stream with audio and movement similar to the playlist, check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and confirm that playback, audio, and transitions behave as intended. The cited guidance does not prescribe a specific test duration.
Prepare a playlist for unattended operation
CBR is a rate-control choice, not a 24/7 reliability guarantee. Before leaving an OBS playlist running, test the playback and the transitions or restarts your actual setup will use. Include representative audio and motion, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test.

- Watch for dropped frames, disconnections, or YouTube stream-health warnings rather than assuming a long stream is healthy because it started successfully.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are general live-stream guidance. They do not promise a particular uptime or prescribe a test duration for continuous playlists.

OBS reports dropped frames
OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Investigate the delivery path and lower the bitrate if it exceeds stable upload capacity. Changing from CBR to VBR is not an established fix for this symptom.

The connection is unstable on Wi-Fi
OBS recommends a wired connection when streaming because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If practical, test over Ethernet and compare stream health. A cable is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Problems persist on a wired connection
OBS lists possible causes including modem or router problems, a faulty network cable, network card, or another network device. Check the network path and equipment before replacing hardware; OBS advises talking to your ISP if you are unsure whether hardware needs replacement. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream’s health and messages during a test.

Frames skip or the picture distorts without network drops
Do not assume every playback problem is a bitrate-delivery issue. OBS’s encoding guidance notes that system limits, resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset can affect encoding performance. Check whether OBS is struggling to encode before changing network settings.
OBS offers dynamic bitrate as a fallback that can lower quality to adapt to a connection; OBS notes that this does not resolve the underlying cause. Use it with that trade-off in mind, and continue investigating the network or configured bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
