For a mostly static or slowly moving 24/7 YouTube playlist, start with 30 FPS. It gives OBS less rendering and encoding work, and at 1080p YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is lower than for 60 FPS. Choose 60 FPS when the source contains motion that benefits from smoother playback and your encoder and internet connection can sustain it.
30 FPS or 60 FPS: which should you use?

These bitrate figures apply specifically to 1080p H.264. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p is 6 Mbps at both 30 and 60 FPS, and other codecs have different recommendations. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings table for your exact resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Do not expect a 60 FPS setting to add motion detail to footage recorded at 30 FPS or to mostly still images. YouTube lists live frame rates up to 60 FPS, but its settings guidance does not say that converting lower-frame-rate source material creates new motion detail.

Set up OBS and YouTube for a representative test
A frame-rate choice is only useful if the whole stream—video, audio, encoding, and connection—works together. Test with content representative of the playlist before relying on it for continuous operation.

- Choose the frame rate in OBS. Open Settings > Video and set Common FPS Values to 30 or 60. For a mostly static playlist, begin at 30. Try 60 only if smoother motion is important and your setup can handle the additional workload.
- Set output resolution and bitrate. In Settings > Output, use the streaming output settings appropriate to your chosen encoder and resolution. For H.264 at 1080p, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 30 FPS or 14 Mbps at 60 FPS. For H.264 at 720p, its recommendation is 6 Mbps at either frame rate. Use YouTube’s table rather than carrying those figures over to another resolution or codec.
- Use YouTube’s recommended stream parameters. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and H.264, H.265, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. It recommends RTMPS as a secure option for RTMP streaming. Match the settings to the encoder and destination you have configured.
- Connect OBS to the correct YouTube stream. Copy the stream key for the intended YouTube broadcast into OBS’s stream configuration. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that stream. Verify the selected YouTube broadcast and key before starting.
- Test with the playlist’s real audio and movement. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include sound and motion similar to the intended stream, then check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s encoding and connection diagnostics.
- Adjust based on what fails. If OBS cannot render or encode reliably at 60 FPS, reduce the frame rate to 30. If dropped frames rise, check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Retest after changing settings.
YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers, but that does not make an unstable incoming stream stable. A successful short test is useful, not proof that an unattended broadcast will run without interruption indefinitely.
Keep a 24/7 playlist reliable—and use content you can stream
For a continuous broadcast, the setting that looks smoothest is not automatically the best choice. A stable 30 FPS stream is a better fit than 60 FPS that repeatedly overloads the encoder or drops frames. Keep OBS’s performance and connection diagnostics, plus YouTube stream health, in view while testing and operating the broadcast.

- Encoding overload: OBS identifies frame rate as a factor in rendering and encoding performance. Its guidance is to reduce to 30 FPS if 60 FPS is not working.
- Dropped frames: OBS says these indicate a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate; too many can lead to disconnection. Check the connection and bitrate, then test again.
- Content rights and channel policies: Before making a playlist public, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every recording, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content requirements for your channel and content. The encoder settings do not grant rights to the video or audio.
OBS itself is one way to keep a playlist running, but it depends on a computer and connection staying available. A streaming PC capable of sustained encoding may be relevant if you choose this route; the frame-rate setting alone cannot establish whether a particular computer is adequate.
