Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose object storage when an application can use an object API and the data is large, unstructured, and suited to bucket-style storage—such as data-lake content, logs, backups, or archives. Choose file storage when applications or people need shared folders, paths, and familiar file operations over NFS or SMB. If a legacy application needs file access but cloud-backed storage is the goal, a gateway may bridge the models, provided its behavior meets the application’s requirements.
How object and file storage differ
Object storage
Object storage keeps each data item as an object with an identifier and metadata, typically in a bucket-style namespace. Applications usually read and write objects through APIs. Metadata can help describe and retrieve content, but object storage is not simply a conventional folder tree exposed as a network drive. See AWS’s overview of object storage.

File storage
File storage organizes content into files and directories. Applications and users access it through paths and file-system operations, commonly using NFS or SMB. This model fits software that expects shared files and people who work with hierarchical folders. Google describes its file-storage architecture and services here.

The distinction is about how data is organized and accessed, not just how capacity is provided. An application built around paths, locking, or file operations may need changes before it can use an object API directly. A file service or gateway can instead present file access while storing data in an object system.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Which workloads are a natural fit?
| Workload or requirement | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Data lakes, analytics data, logs, user-generated content, backup, or archive | Object storage | These are common uses for scalable, API-accessed repositories. Check access frequency, retrieval behavior, and lifecycle needs for the specific service. AWS describes Amazon S3 as object storage; its Well-Architected guidance on data access patterns also helps frame the choice. |
| Shared directories, user home folders, common content or media repositories, or applications built for NFS/SMB | File storage | Paths, directories, and file protocols suit applications and users that rely on shared file access. |
| An existing on-premises application requires NFS/SMB, but the organization wants cloud-backed storage | File service or gateway backed by object storage | A gateway can present file access to applications that do not natively use object APIs. Validate caching, connectivity, and file-operation behavior before relying on it. AWS’s File Gateway discussion describes this hybrid pattern. |
These are starting points, not absolute rules. Services and tiers differ, and performance and cost depend on the provider, region, configuration, requests, data movement, and application behavior. No universal performance or price winner follows from the storage category alone.
Evaluate the decision against your workload
- Confirm the application interface. Determine whether software can use an object API or depends on file paths, locking, rename behavior, permissions, or NFS/SMB. API compatibility can decide whether object storage is usable without application changes.
- Match the namespace to how data is used. Ask whether identifiers and object metadata are useful, or whether users and applications need folders, paths, and familiar file organization.
- Measure access patterns and performance needs. Record read and write behavior, concurrency, latency sensitivity, throughput, and request patterns. Test with a representative workload; do not assume one category or storage tier will perform better without a matching benchmark.
- Estimate scale and growth. Project data volume, object or file count, and growth. Object storage is commonly positioned for large datasets, while file workloads also require attention to hierarchy, namespace behavior, and the selected service’s limits.
- Define resilience requirements. Set recovery objectives, replication needs, backup and restore processes, and regional requirements. Verify what the chosen service configuration actually provides; the architecture label alone does not guarantee availability or recoverability.
- Calculate the operating model and total cost. Include storage tiers, requests or operations, data transfer, retrieval, gateways and caches, migration, and administration. Compare actual services in the relevant region and workload rather than relying on a category-level price assumption.
Enterprise implementation choices
Cloud providers offer distinct service families rather than one interchangeable storage product. AWS separates S3 object storage from file offerings such as EFS and FSx; Microsoft’s AWS-to-Azure services comparison maps storage families and cloud-backed file patterns. Google Cloud lists Filestore for NFS file storage, Managed Lustre for high-performance data-intensive file workloads, and NetApp Volumes for enterprise multi-protocol requirements in its storage architecture overview. These examples identify categories, not a vendor ranking.

A gateway can let an application continue to use NFS or SMB while data is backed by object storage. This may avoid an immediate application rewrite, but it does not make every object store behave like a native file system. Test the application’s required file operations and validate cache behavior, connectivity, failure handling, and migration needs. A gateway is a compatibility layer to assess—not proof that the underlying object store supports every file-system expectation.

A practical way to make the choice
- Start with compatibility: If the application requires file semantics and cannot be adapted, evaluate file storage first.
- Start with object storage: If the workload can use an object API and prioritizes storing and managing large unstructured datasets, evaluate object storage and its tiers.
- Consider a bridge: If file access is mandatory but cloud-backed object storage is attractive, test a gateway against real application behavior.
- Validate with evidence: Benchmark representative traffic and model the full service costs, resilience configuration, and operational work before committing.
