If a Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 won’t pair or repeatedly disconnects, update and restart the console, update the controller, then reset and pair it again. Test with the console undocked before suspecting a controller fault. If the Joy-Con works wirelessly but is not recognized while attached, use Nintendo’s separate attachment-troubleshooting steps instead.
First identify what is failing
These checks apply to Joy-Con 2 controllers used with Nintendo Switch 2. A controller that will not pair wirelessly or that repeatedly connects and disconnects has a different problem from one that works wirelessly but is not recognized while physically attached.

- Wireless pairing or repeated disconnection: follow the update, reset, and undocked-use checks below.
- Not recognized while attached: follow Nintendo’s attached-controller troubleshooting.
- Will not power on or charge: check charging separately in the power section below.
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con are a different controller family; Nintendo lists separate troubleshooting for them and Joy-Con 2 in its controller troubleshooting guide.
Update the console and Joy-Con 2
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, scroll to System, and select System Update. If the console is already up to date, restart it.
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers to check for Joy-Con 2 controller updates.
If multiple controllers are paired, Nintendo says they are updated one at a time. Then try using the controller wirelessly again. Nintendo recommends checking updates before testing detached use in its repeated-connection troubleshooting.
#1 Best Overall
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Reset the controller and pair it again
- Press the SYNC button on the affected Joy-Con 2 once.
- Press another button, such as A, to pair it again.
- If you need to start pairing from the console menu, open Controllers and select Change Grip/Order, then follow the on-screen prompt for the controller and how you will hold it.
This reset-and-re-pair procedure is Nintendo’s recommended step for a Joy-Con 2 that repeatedly connects and disconnects. See Nintendo UK’s instructions.
Compare docked and undocked use
Try the controller with the console removed from the dock. If the connection problem appears only in TV mode, compare that result with handheld or tabletop use before treating the controller itself as the cause.

- The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
- This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Test the console while it is docked in TV mode.
- Check that the dock is connected using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo says the cable supplied with Switch 2 is Ultra High Speed.
- Remove the console from the dock and test the Joy-Con 2 again.
Nintendo’s Americas guide includes this docked-versus-undocked check; its UK repeated-disconnection instructions also say to troubleshoot with the console removed from the dock. An HDMI cable is not a likely explanation for every wireless fault, so focus on dock connections when the symptom is specific to docked use. See Nintendo’s repeated-connection guide.

If a Joy-Con 2 will not power on or seems unable to hold enough charge to operate, first check whether it is charging. Nintendo estimates that a Joy-Con 2 takes approximately three-and-a-half hours to fully charge. Attached controllers charge when the console is connected to its AC adapter and is powered on or in Sleep Mode; the estimate is not a guarantee of battery runtime, which Nintendo says can vary with software and functions used.

- These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).
- Use the correct Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter and make sure the console meets the charging conditions above.
- If available, compare charging while attached with charging in the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010).
- If the Joy-Con charges in the grip but not while attached, Nintendo says the console may have an issue and may need service.
The Charging Grip is a way to check a charging-related symptom, not a fix for wireless pairing or interference. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 power guidance.

If the relevant update, re-pairing, dock, or charging checks do not solve the problem, follow Nintendo’s support or repair pathway. For a controller that is not recognized while attached, Nintendo recommends detaching and reattaching it a couple of times, then testing another Joy-Con 2 if one is available.
Rank #4
- The Joy-Con 2 (L) controller includes the Capture Button.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- If another Joy-Con 2 works while attached, Nintendo says the non-working controller may need repair.
- If no Joy-Con 2 is recognized while attached, Nintendo says the console and affected controller may need repair.
For this attachment-specific branch, use Nintendo’s recognition troubleshooting page. For unresolved wireless or repeated-disconnection faults, see Nintendo’s repeated-connection support page.
