The risk is not simply that many grants exist: it is that teams may not know which apps can access which data, who approved them, or whether the access is still justified. Nudge Security describes the problem as one of discovering, assessing, and governing those connections; the practical response is to inventory grants, apply least privilege, review business need, and revoke access through a controlled process.
What OAuth grant sprawl means
An OAuth grant is an authorization that lets an application access resources on a user’s behalf, within the permissions and context allowed by the issuing platform. A user might authorize an app to read email, access files, or connect to another SaaS service. The exact risk depends on what the grant permits and what data is reachable—not just on the number of authorizations.

Grant sprawl becomes a governance problem when organizations lack a reliable view of those connections. An app may remain authorized after a project ends, an employee leaves, or the original business need changes. Security teams then have to determine which access is legitimate, excessive, abandoned, or poorly understood.

Why unmanaged grants can increase risk
A grant can give a third-party app a route to organizational data. If its permissions are broader than the task requires, or the app is no longer trusted or needed, the organization may be accepting exposure without a business benefit. Unclear ownership makes it harder to assess the impact of removing access or to identify who should approve it.
The IETF’s January 2025 RFC 9700, Best Current Practice for OAuth 2.0 Security, says: “The privileges associated with an access token SHOULD be restricted to the minimum required for the particular application or use case.” The RFC also recommends restricting tokens to specific audiences, resources, and actions. These are standards recommendations for OAuth implementations; SaaS providers’ consent and grant controls can differ.

What to review for each grant
An inventory is useful only if it gives reviewers enough context to make a decision. For each authorization, capture:
Recommended Free Tools
- App identity: the application name and, where available, its publisher or vendor.
- Grantor and owner: who authorized the access and which team or service owner is accountable for it.
- Scopes and resources: the permissions granted and the systems or data they expose.
- Data sensitivity: whether access reaches email, files, code, administrative functions, or other sensitive information.
- Business need: the task the integration supports and whether a narrower permission set is available.
- Age and use: when the grant was approved and whether the integration is still active and needed.
- Decision and status: who reviewed it, what they decided, and whether access remains in place.
How to reduce grant sprawl safely
- Build an inventory. Identify grants across the relevant identity providers and SaaS systems. Record the app, grantor, scopes, data access, owner, business justification, and current status.
- Prioritize higher-impact access. Start with broad permissions for email, files, code, or administration; apps with unclear ownership or vendor context; abandoned integrations; and grants associated with a departed employee.
- Confirm the need. Ask the grantor or service owner whether the integration is still required and whether it can work with fewer permissions. Do not infer that an unfamiliar grant is safe or unnecessary without checking its business role.
- Approve and stage revocations. For access that is no longer needed or cannot be justified, use a controlled process. Confirm likely work impact, obtain the required approval, and record the decision before revoking.
- Verify and maintain the record. After revocation, check that the grant is no longer present and document the outcome. Use employee offboarding as a natural checkpoint, and schedule recurring reviews.
- Set decision ownership. Define who may approve, revoke, or override recommendations, and retain an audit trail of decisions.
What Nudge Security says its tools do
Nudge Security describes its OAuth risk-management approach as discovering, assessing, and governing third-party app connections to core SaaS platforms. Its product page says the platform inventories grants across a SaaS estate, maps scopes, classifies and risk-scores integrations using permission and data-sensitivity context, and supports reviews, verification nudges, alerts, and revocation of unused or high-risk grants. These are Nudge’s product claims, not independent test results. See Nudge Security’s OAuth risk-management overview.

Nudge’s support documentation says its OAuth Analyst reviews new third-party grants authorized through Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra ID. It describes three outcomes—Permit, Justify, and Revoke—and says the analysis considers requested scopes, app reputation, vendor security posture, scope sensitivity, and user context. Grants marked Revoke are sent to an administrator by default; they are not revoked without approval. The documented analysis excludes login-only “Sign in with Google” grants and grants authorized through other identity providers. Details are in Nudge’s OAuth Analyst documentation.
Permission requirements matter when evaluating any tool with access to grants. Nudge’s OAuth Analyst documentation and Microsoft Entra scope list should be checked against current requirements with an administrator. The scope list says domain analysis requires read-only access overall, but specifically identifies DelegatedPermissionGrant.ReadWrite.All as the permission that allows revocation of user OAuth grants. Do not treat that permission set as wholly read-only.

Nudge’s July 2026 announcement is a vendor account of its launch, not independent evidence of efficacy, and the available product descriptions do not establish how its performance compares with other tools. Organizations should validate coverage, permissions, approval controls, and audit records against their own environment.
How much grant sprawl is typical?
Nudge Security’s undated OAuth page displays an average of 88 OAuth grants created per employee and separately says its research found an average of 70 grants per employee in its FAQ. The page does not explain whether the figures use different samples, dates, definitions, or methods, so they should not be treated as settled general-population benchmarks. The page also attributes a forecast that 50% of SaaS breaches will stem from overprivileged OAuth tokens by 2027 to Gartner; the underlying Gartner publication was not established here. These figures are vendor-page claims, not independently verified prevalence measures. The decision to review grants should rest on the permissions and data involved, not on an assumed industry average.
