A move from Kindle to Kobo can make sense if your priorities fit Kobo’s device features and library-borrowing options—but it will not automatically move your Kindle Store purchases. The deciding factors are the Kobo model you choose, how you read and annotate, whether your local library supports compatible borrowing, and the formats and DRM status of your existing books.
What changes when you move from Kindle to Kobo?
The change is less about one reader being universally better and more about moving between two stores and device ecosystems. Compare the specific Kindle and Kobo models you are considering, rather than assuming every Kobo has the same screen or features. Kobo’s current supported-model guidance includes the Clara BW and Libra Colour, but that does not identify which model an individual reader owns or recommend either as a universal choice. Check the supported Kobo models and the Kobo eReader catalog for current availability and specifications in your market.

- Screen: Decide whether you prefer a monochrome display or want color for covers, highlights, and compatible reading features. Kobo’s color-screen guidance describes color library views and colored highlighting on compatible devices.

Do not assume a hardware switch transfers a Kindle library. Amazon says DRM-protected Kindle books are limited to Kindle apps and devices. Starting January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB or PDF files for qualifying DRM-free titles. Kindle Unlimited and other borrowed books are excluded. For DRM-free KDP titles published before December 9, 2025, the publisher must have enabled the download option. These are conditional exceptions, not a general export of Kindle purchases. Before switching, check the format and DRM status of the books you rely on. Eligible DRM-free purchases may be available as EPUB or PDF; protected purchases and borrowed titles remain tied to Kindle access under Amazon’s stated rules. Keep access to your Kindle account and apps for books that cannot be downloaded in a format usable on another device. Amazon also describes transfer limits for Kindle files in its Kindle file-transfer guidance.
How does library borrowing work on Kobo?
On newer compatible Kobo eReaders with built-in OverDrive, you can borrow and download compatible library ebooks directly on the device. For other compatible eReaders, OverDrive describes using free Adobe Digital Editions on a Windows or Mac computer to transfer library ebooks. Whether a particular title is available depends on the library’s catalog and lending terms; device and service compatibility also vary by location. Check your library’s catalog and OverDrive’s getting-started guide for ereaders before treating this as a reason to switch.

Who is most likely to benefit from switching?
Kobo may suit you if…
- You have checked the specific Kobo model’s screen, size, and controls and prefer them to the Kindle you use now.
- You want color library views or colored highlighting and have confirmed that the Kobo model supports the features you need.
- Your library offers compatible OverDrive ebooks and you want to borrow on an eReader or are comfortable transferring books with Adobe Digital Editions.
- You are comfortable buying through Kobo or managing compatible ebook files separately from your Kindle Store purchases.
Staying with Kindle may be simpler if…
- Most of your reading depends on DRM-protected Kindle purchases or borrowed Kindle titles.
- You prefer your current Kindle’s particular controls, screen, or reading workflow.
- Your library or region does not offer the Kobo-compatible borrowing you want.
Use the official Kobo catalog to confirm current model features and local availability, and verify library compatibility with your own library. A platform change is easiest to assess when you separate the device decision from the book-library decision: liking a Kobo’s hardware does not mean your existing Kindle purchases will follow you.
