Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn NYT Strands, three valid words that are not theme answers earn an in-game hint. The hint points to an unfound theme word; it does not reveal the spangram. Independent guides describe the mechanics, so treat details about the hint display and its effect on statistics as guide-reported rather than official NYT documentation.
How the Strands hint system works
Strands uses a 6×8 letter grid. You can connect letters horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, changing direction along the way, but you cannot reuse a tile within one submitted word. The puzzle’s theme answers fit the clue, while the spangram names the theme and touches two opposite sides of the grid, according to an independent game guide.

Earn a hint with non-theme words
The reviewed guides report that three valid words outside the theme unlock a hint; a detailed guide specifies that each qualifying word must be at least four letters long. These are extra words, not theme answers. The guides describe wrong guesses as unpenalized, so exploring the grid for qualifying words can be useful when you are stuck. The exact mechanics are reported by independent sources, not verified NYT help documentation.

An in-game hint points to one theme word you have not found. A detailed independent hint guide reports that its letters appear progressively, allowing you to stop once you recognize the answer. It does not reveal the spangram.

When to use an in-game hint
Try a little more unaided solving first if you want to preserve the discovery process: reread the theme clue, consider what category it suggests, and search for a possible spangram connecting opposite sides. Recognizing the theme’s name can make the remaining answers easier to spot.
Use a hint when that exploration no longer produces useful leads and you would rather get a targeted nudge than continue guessing. Because the letters are reported to appear in stages, you can inspect them only until the answer clicks, then trace the word yourself.
Choose how much help you want
| Help option | What it gives you | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Keep solving unaided | No reveal; reread the clue and search for the spangram or theme words. | Inside the game |
| In-game hint | After three valid non-theme words, points to an unfound theme answer; letters are reported to appear progressively. | Inside the game; mechanics described by independent guides |
| Staged third-party hint | May offer a theme or spangram nudge before showing full answers. | External hint page, not an NYT game feature |
Third-party hint pages can spoil more than the built-in hint, depending on what you open. If you use one, choose a staged page and stop at the level of help you want.

What happens to your stats if you use a hint?
One independent guide reports that using an in-game hint removes that day’s “solved without hints” status but leaves the streak intact. This is a guide-reported stats trade-off, not a detail confirmed here by accessible official NYT help documentation.
