To store ADA, choose a Cardano wallet, secure its recovery credentials, and use it to manage the keys that authorize transactions; the ADA itself is recorded on the Cardano blockchain. To practise sending and checking a transaction without risking real ADA, use a wallet configured for a Cardano testnet and test ADA from the official faucet. After submitting, look up the transaction ID in an explorer and confirm that it appears in the ledger.
What a Cardano wallet stores—and who controls your ADA
ADA is a record on the Cardano blockchain, not a file held inside a wallet. A wallet manages the cryptographic keys used to access that record and authorize transactions. In a self-custody wallet, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting the wallet’s recovery credentials. If you lose the keys or recovery information, you may lose access to the funds. An exchange-held balance is different: the exchange controls the keys associated with the assets it holds, and you rely on its services and access procedures. Cardano’s wallet guidance strongly discourages storing assets on exchanges. With self-custody, keep recovery credentials confidential and maintain a secure backup. Never enter a recovery phrase into an unsolicited website or send it to someone claiming to be support.

Wallets differ in convenience, portability, key storage, supported functions, and dependence on third-party services. Check the wallet’s official documentation for its backup and recovery process, supported assets and features, and whether it supports the network you intend to use.

Use a testnet to practise without risking mainnet ADA
A testnet is the safest way to practise the sending and verification workflow without transferring real mainnet ADA. You need a wallet that supports the test network you choose and test ADA obtained from the official Cardano faucet. A testnet transaction is not a transfer of spendable mainnet ADA.
- Choose a test network supported by your wallet, then configure the wallet for that network. Do not assume that all consumer wallets use the same controls or labels.
- Request test ADA from the faucet for the selected network, following its current instructions.
- Confirm that both the sender wallet and recipient address are on the same test network before starting the transfer.
- Keep the test transaction on that network. Testnet and mainnet addresses or records are not interchangeable.
For command-line context, Cardano’s testnet guide gives Preview network magic as 2 and Pre-production network magic as 1. It distinguishes mainnet’s --mainnet flag from testnet use of --testnet-magic INTEGER. These are CLI options; a consumer wallet may present network selection differently. If you choose to practise on mainnet instead, that is a real transfer of value: verify the network and recipient address carefully before signing, and do not treat a particular amount or fee as universal.

Send the practice transaction
The exact screens depend on the wallet, but the transaction lifecycle is consistent: create the transaction, have an authorized key sign it, then submit it to the network. Cardano’s transaction tutorial describes these stages.

- Enter or scan the recipient address and select an amount of test ADA.
- Review the recipient address and network before proceeding. Stop if either does not match the intended recipient and test network.
- Authorize the transaction with the wallet’s signing method, then submit it.
- Copy or save the transaction ID (TxId) shown by the wallet. If the wallet only reports that the transaction was submitted, use the TxId to check whether it was included in the ledger.
Verify the transaction in Cardano Explorer
Open Cardano Explorer or another suitable Cardano explorer and search for the TxId. Cardano’s tracking-tools guidance says explorers can search transaction, block, or epoch IDs and show block details, including confirmations.

- Check that the transaction record matches the transfer you intended to make.
- Inspect its block and confirmation information to determine whether it has been included in the ledger.
- If no record appears, do not treat the wallet’s submitted status as proof of inclusion. Check that you are searching on the correct network and that the TxId was copied correctly, then search again later.
A TxId is the transaction’s identifier and lets you find its contents in an explorer. Explorer results are public ledger information; do not share recovery credentials as part of troubleshooting.
