For the October 3, 2026 NYT Pips Hard board, start with the forced 1–0 placement: put the 1 at row 1, column 2, and the 0 at row 1, column 3. Then work through the top-row sums before committing long dominoes. The available date-specific guides support these opening moves, but not a verified complete grid, so this guide stops short of presenting an unconfirmed final solution.

October 3 board details

October 3 has three separate daily boards: Easy #1337, Medium #1352, and Hard #1362, according to TECHi’s October 3 guide. The Hard board is described by Grid Puzzles’ date-specific guide as a 5×7 board with 14 dominoes and 19 regions: 11 sum regions, two all-equal regions, two greater-than regions, and four free regions.

Step-by-step opening hints

  1. Use the single-cell 1 region. At row 1, column 2, the region requires a 1, so the cell must be covered by a domino containing a 1.
  2. Place the 1–0 domino. The date-specific guide supports placing its 1 at row 1, column 2 and its 0 at row 1, column 3.
  3. Check the adjacent single-cell region. Row 1, column 3 is also described as a single-cell region requiring 0, consistent with that placement.
  4. Address top-row sum targets next. TECHi recommends working out the top-row sums early. Doing so helps preserve room for longer placements, including the 5–5 and 3–6 dominoes; their exact positions are not established by the available hints.
  5. Recheck affected regions after each placement. Keep track of which values are fixed and whether each remaining domino can still fit the open cells.

How to reason through the remaining constraints

NYT Pips is a domino-placement puzzle in which every shaded region must satisfy its displayed rule. The general rules and constraint types are summarized by Anagrammer’s Pips reference.

  • Sum region: Add the pips in its cells and match the displayed target.
  • All-equal region: Every cell in the region must have the same pip value.
  • Greater-than or less-than region: Compare the region’s total with its displayed threshold in the indicated direction.
  • Free region: It has no additional pip-value condition, but its cells still need to be covered by dominoes that fit the board.

When several possibilities remain, prioritize the region with the fewest viable values. For each candidate, check whether a domino can physically cover the relevant cells, how it affects neighboring regions, and whether the remaining dominoes can still fill the board. A locally valid choice is not enough if it leaves an impossible shape or pip supply elsewhere.

What is—and is not—verified

The date-specific hints establish the forced 1–0 opening and recommend tackling top-row sums early. They do not provide a verified placement for every remaining domino. Because a complete arrangement cannot be confirmed from those details, treating an inferred grid as the October 3 answer would risk giving you a false solution.
