NYT Games Subscription: What You Get and Whether It’s Worth It

A NYT Games subscription adds archives, fuller puzzle access and subscriber tools. Here’s what stays free, how billing works, and who may find it worthwhile.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A NYT Games subscription is most useful if you play often and want the crossword archive, full puzzle access, statistics, or subscriber tools such as Wordle Bot. If you’re content with the free daily games, you may not need to pay. NYT’s current price and introductory offer are not established here, so check the checkout page for the billing period, promotional length, and renewal price before subscribing.

What do you get with a NYT Games subscription?

The New York Times Help Center says, “With a New York Times Games subscription, you have access to all of The New York Times games and puzzles.” Its listed lineup includes The Crossword, Midi Crossword, Mini Crossword, Wordle, Spelling Bee, Connections, Connections: Sports Edition, Crossplay, Letter Boxed, Pips, Strands, Sudoku, and Tiles. The lineup may change; check the official Games help page for the current list.

Paid access also brings features beyond playing the day’s puzzle:

  • Crossword archives: NYT describes an archive of more than 10,000 Crosswords, including Daily puzzles dating back to 1993 and Minis dating back to 2014. The page does not date that count.
  • Stats and streaks: The digital-subscriptions page describes access to statistics and streak information.
  • Analysis tools and companions: Features such as Wordle Bot and Cross Bot, along with editorial companions, are part of the subscriber experience. Full features on companion sites and analysis tools require Games or an eligible broader subscription.
  • Monthly bonus puzzle: The Games help page lists a subscriber-only monthly bonus puzzle.

These features matter most if you revisit older puzzles, track how you play, or use the analysis tools—not merely if you want to open a free daily game.

Which NYT games are free?

The Help Center lists Wordle, Connections, Connections: Sports Edition, Crossplay, Pips, Strands, and Sudoku among daily games available without a Games-including subscription. Spelling Bee has limited free access. Access terms can change, so confirm the current status on the NYT Games help page.

A free daily game and a paid subscription are not the same experience: the subscription is primarily about fuller access, archives, subscriber companions, and tools. If you only play the free games and do not want those extras, paying may add little for you.

What a Games subscription does not include

A Games subscription does not include NYT News, Cooking, Wirecutter, Audio, The Athletic, e-reader editions, or the annual Puzzle Mania special section. NYT says Games is included with All Access and Home Delivery subscriptions. If you want those other products too, compare the current broader-plan price rather than assuming Games-only access covers them.

Puzzle Packs are a separate purchase in the Games app and are not generally included with a Games subscription. The app Help Center says subscribers can access some curated collections in the Archive; Packs purchased in the app are limited to the platform where they were bought. See the Games app Help Center for current details.

How billing and sharing work

According to the Games subscription help page, subscriptions bill every 28 days or annually, depending on the plan. They renew automatically and are charged in advance unless canceled; sales tax may apply. If you subscribed through Apple or Google, contact that billing provider about subscription charges. The current price and any introductory offer are not verified here, so check the amount and terms shown at checkout.

NYT Games Family lets the primary subscriber invite up to three additional subscribers, each with a unique account. The listed benefits include games and puzzles, archives, and editorial companions. The primary subscriber handles billing and cancellation. Whether Family costs less than individual plans depends on the current offer and household size; compare the actual prices before choosing.

Is a NYT Games subscription worth it?

There is no universal value answer without the price you are offered and the features you will actually use. Make the decision against your own habits:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You play frequently: A recurring subscription is easier to justify if you regularly use several games or want more than the free daily experience.
  • You want older puzzles or performance tools: The archive, stats, streaks, and subscriber analysis tools are key reasons to consider paying.
  • You only want free daily play: Start without a subscription if the free games meet your needs.
  • You want other NYT products too: Compare All Access or Home Delivery rather than buying Games alone by default.
  • You are sharing: Compare the current Games Family offer with individual access, remembering that each invited person uses a separate account and the primary subscriber controls billing.
  • You see a promotion: Check how long it lasts, how often you will be billed, and what the price becomes at renewal before accepting it.

NYT Games puzzles were played more than 11.2 billion times in 2025, according to the Associated Press in 2026. That indicates the games’ reach, not whether the subscription is worth the cost for any particular reader.
