Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTrust an AI agent only for tasks whose risks you have checked against its actual access and controls. Before connecting email, files, a calendar, or an account, find out what it can read, what actions it can take, whether it asks before consequential changes, and whether you can inspect and undo its work. Start with a narrow, reversible task; do not treat a polished demo or a benchmark score as a safety guarantee.
Start with the consequences, not the “agent” label
An AI agent can plan a sequence of steps and use tools to act. Its risk therefore depends on the task, the information it can access, the connected services, and the permissions granted—not just the model or the product’s name. A system that organizes a draft is not equivalent to one that can send it, share private files, change account settings, or move money. NIST describes agent workflows as multi-step and says users need visibility into tool use and evidence; Anthropic likewise emphasizes that data access and stakes vary by context. NIST’s evaluation-probe project and Anthropic’s practical guidance provide context.

Map the task before connecting anything
- What can it read? Identify the specific mailboxes, folders, documents, contacts, calendar entries, and account data exposed to it.
- What can it do? Distinguish read-only access from creating, editing, sending, deleting, purchasing, or changing permissions.
- Who or what is affected? Consider whether an error stays in a private draft or reaches another person, alters shared data, or affects finances or account security.
- Can you reverse it? Check whether the action can be undone and how much harm could occur before you notice.
Check permissions, confirmation, and recovery
Choose the narrowest access that still lets the agent complete the task. Prefer a limited folder or read-only connection over broad account access when possible. Find out how to pause the agent and revoke its access, and whether its authorization can be limited by action or duration.
For consequential steps, require a separate approval before execution rather than relying on the agent to police itself. OWASP recommends validating an agent’s proposed action for scope, privilege, and approval state, with stronger authentication for critical actions such as payments, account recovery, privilege changes, and bulk deletion. See OWASP’s guidance on risks and controls for LLM applications.

- Keep messages as drafts until you review recipients, content, and attachments.
- Require explicit confirmation before sharing files, deleting data, changing security settings, or spending money.
- For sensitive actions, look for step-up authentication—an additional identity check—not merely a confirmation generated by the same agent.
- Know how to stop a running task and revoke the connected account’s authorization.
Run realistic tests before relying on it
Try the agent on representative tasks in the same application and configuration you plan to use. A successful demonstration on an easy request does not establish how it will behave when instructions are unclear, input is misleading, or the requested action exceeds its intended scope. NIST’s ARIA pilot separates model testing, red teaming, and field testing; its evaluation-probe work also considers whether sources support claims, relevant context is missing, and evidence is sufficient. NIST’s ARIA overview describes the assessment effort.
- Try a normal task. Give it a typical request, then check the result against the original source data.
- Introduce ambiguity. Use an instruction with a missing recipient, unclear date, or underspecified file. See whether it asks a useful question instead of guessing.
- Test a boundary. Ask it to perform an action outside the task’s scope, such as sending when you requested only a draft. It should respect the limit or ask for approval.
- Test misleading input. Include irrelevant or hostile text in material the agent may read. Check whether it treats that text as untrusted content rather than a new instruction.
- Inspect the result and record. Confirm what it accessed, which tools it used, what it changed, and whether the stated evidence supports its answer.
Do not use a live high-stakes account as a test bed. Begin with sample data or a reversible task, and expand access only after the agent behaves as expected and the controls are clear.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Look for an auditable activity history
A useful record should let you reconstruct the task: what information the agent accessed, which tools it called, what actions it took, and what evidence informed its answer. A fluent explanation after the fact is not proof that an action happened as described. NIST’s evaluation-probe project frames auditability as linking decisions and outputs to evidence. Ask whether logs are available to you, how much detail they contain, and how long they remain accessible.

If you are choosing between services, compare the configured products rather than brand claims. Their data access, retention terms, and safety controls may differ even when they use similar underlying models.

| Permission granularity | Can access be restricted to particular data, tools, or actions? |
| Privacy and retention | What information is stored, for how long, and how is it used? Check the provider’s current disclosure for the specific service. |
| Pause and revoke | Can you stop a task promptly and disconnect the account without removing unrelated access? |
| Approval boundaries | Which actions require your explicit confirmation, and can those rules be enforced independently of the agent? |
| Activity and evidence records | Can you review tool calls, accessed information, actions, and supporting evidence? |
| Behavior under testing | How does it handle normal, ambiguous, misleading, and out-of-scope requests in your intended setup? |
| Evaluation relevance | Do published evaluations match the exact agent, task, configuration, and conditions you care about? |
These checks reflect the trust dimensions in NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework, including safety, security, privacy, accountability, transparency, and reliability across design, deployment, use, and testing.

There is no established universal pass score or checklist threshold that proves an agent is safe for all personal uses. Standards and evaluation methods are still developing, so verify current permissions, retention terms, and confirmation settings in the provider’s documentation before granting access.
