Wordle asks you to work toward one hidden five-letter word in six chances; Connections asks you to sort 16 visible words into four groups of four. Choose Wordle if you like narrowing down a single answer under a fixed limit, or Connections if you prefer spotting themes across a field of words.
How Wordle and Connections work
| What differs | Wordle | Connections |
|---|---|---|
| Core task | Guess one five-letter word. | Group 16 words into four sets of four that share a theme. |
| Main constraint | Six chances to find the answer. | Four category discoveries; each group has one of four colors. |
| Information shown | One answer is hidden. | All 16 words are visible, but their intended relationships are not always obvious. |
| Official difficulty cue | The official NYT Games description specifies the word length and number of chances; it does not establish a comparative difficulty rating. | NYT Help describes yellow as the easiest group and purple as the trickiest. Words may seem to fit more than one category, though each puzzle has exactly one solution. |
NYT Games describes Wordle as “Guess the 5-letter word with 6 chances” and Connections as “Group words that share a common thread.” The difference is the kind of reasoning each asks for: Wordle is a single-answer deduction puzzle, while Connections is a pattern-finding and classification puzzle. Are Wordle or Connections easier?
There is no comparative difficulty statistic in the official sources cited here, so neither game can be called objectively easier on that evidence. Their challenges are different: Wordle limits the number of chances for a single answer, while Connections makes players distinguish intended categories from tempting overlaps. NYT Help calls the yellow Connections group the easiest and the purple group the trickiest; those labels describe groups within Connections, not a comparison with Wordle. NYT Help: Connections
