A nuclear power plant makes electricity by using heat from controlled fission to produce steam. The steam spins a turbine, the turbine turns a generator, and electrical equipment carries the generator’s output to transmission lines. The grid then moves electricity through transmission and distribution networks to customers. Fission supplies heat; it does not send electricity directly to homes.
How does a nuclear reactor work?
- Fission releases heat. In the reactor core, controlled fission in the fuel releases thermal energy.
- Coolant carries heat away. Water or another coolant transfers heat from the core. In common commercial light-water reactors, water serves as the coolant.
- Heat produces steam. Depending on the reactor design, water boils in the reactor vessel or heat is transferred to a separate water loop.
- Steam turns a turbine. Flowing steam pushes turbine blades, making the turbine shaft rotate.
- The turbine turns a generator. The generator converts that mechanical rotation into electrical energy through electromagnetic action.
- Steam is condensed and reused. After leaving the turbine, steam is cooled back into water and pumped around the plant cycle again.
This is the same basic sequence used in other steam power plants: heat becomes steam, steam produces mechanical rotation, and a generator converts that rotation to electricity. What differs is the source of heat. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission summarizes the chain as: “the nuclear reaction heats the fuel, the fuel heats the water to make steam, the steam spins the turbine, the turbine turns the generator, and the generator makes electricity.” NRC, Science 101.

How do PWR and BWR reactors make turbine steam?
Pressurized-water reactors (PWRs) and boiling-water reactors (BWRs) both use heat from fission to make steam, but the water’s route to the turbine differs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Design | Where water boils | Path to the turbine |
|---|---|---|
| Pressurized-water reactor (PWR) | In a separate secondary water loop, not in the primary reactor coolant loop. High pressure keeps the primary coolant liquid as it absorbs heat from the core. | Primary-loop water transfers heat through a steam generator, which boils water in the secondary loop. The secondary-loop steam drives the turbine. |
| Boiling-water reactor (BWR) | In the reactor vessel. | Steam produced in the vessel is routed to the turbine. Afterward, it is condensed and pumped back for reuse. |
The key distinction is whether reactor coolant is separated from turbine steam by a heat exchanger. A PWR sends heat across that boundary in a steam generator; a BWR routes steam produced in the reactor vessel to the turbine. The NRC’s reactor overview describes both paths.

How does nuclear power connect to the grid?
- Generator: The turbine-driven generator produces electrical output.
- Plant electrical equipment and switchyard: Electrical equipment carries the output toward the station’s switchyard, the interface between the generating station and grid transmission lines. An IAEA-hosted technical presentation describes this general interface; it is not a specification for every plant.
- Transmission network: Transmission lines carry bulk electricity over distance as part of the interconnected grid.
- Distribution network: Distribution lines deliver electricity from the transmission system to users.
The NRC defines an electric power grid as “a system of synchronized power providers and consumers, connected by transmission and distribution lines and operated by one or more control centers.” NRC glossary. Because the grid combines generation and demand across a connected system, it is not generally meaningful to say that a particular reactor sends its electricity to a particular home. In the continental United States, the NRC identifies three major interconnections: Eastern, Western, and Texas.
Why does a nuclear plant need electricity of its own?
Generating stations use electricity to run pumps and other operating systems. Those systems normally receive power from the electrical grid, and plants have onsite emergency power provisions for loss of offsite electricity. The equipment and backup arrangements vary by plant; a single voltage, transformer setup, or protection scheme should not be assumed for every station. The NRC discusses plant electrical systems and emergency power in its safe operation of reactors overview.

How common are PWRs and BWRs?
In an article published May 19, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy reported more than 400 commercial reactors worldwide, including 94 in the United States. It also said that, in the United States, more than 65% of operating commercial reactors were PWRs and roughly one-third were BWRs; all U.S. commercial reactors were light-water reactors. These are figures in the DOE article’s 2025 publication context, not a verified 2026 reactor count. U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy.

What to remember about nuclear electricity
- Fission is the plant’s heat source; steam, a turbine, and a generator carry out the conversions that produce electricity.
- A PWR uses a separate steam-generating loop, while a BWR sends steam produced in the reactor vessel to the turbine.
- The switchyard links plant electrical equipment to transmission lines; transmission and distribution are different parts of the grid.
- The plant itself also needs electricity to operate, including when offsite power is unavailable.
