NYT Connections is free to play each day. The daily puzzle appears at midnight in your timezone, and your streak depends on solving it before midnight local time. You can get spoiler-aware help through the official Connections Companion, while the archive and Connections Bot are subscriber features. Here’s how hints, streaks, older puzzles, stats, and sharing work.
How does NYT Connections work?
Each puzzle gives you 16 words. Find four groups of four words that share something in common. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest, followed by green and blue, while purple is the trickiest. Each puzzle has exactly one solution, but the words are chosen to invite multiple plausible connections, so a word that seems to fit one group may belong somewhere else. The daily game is free to play on all platforms. You do not need an NYT account to play, but signing in is useful if you want your saved progress and stats to follow you when you switch devices. When you are signed out, progress is stored locally on your device. NYT’s Games app help and its Games subscription help describe account and syncing details.

Use Connections Companion carefully
Connections Companion is NYT’s official community forum for hints, comments, and a difficulty score. It can offer a nudge when you are stuck, but comments may reveal answers. The Help Center recommends solving the puzzle first or scrolling through the comments at your own risk. If you want to preserve the challenge, avoid reading the comments until you have finished.

Use the puzzle’s clues before seeking outside help
- Look for words that could share a meaning, phrase, category, or other relationship.
- Check whether a tempting word may fit more than one possible group; the puzzle is designed to include misleading overlaps.
- If you consult Companion, stop before comments if you want to avoid spoilers.
The official FAQ does not say that using a hint breaks a streak. The streak rule is about whether you finish the daily puzzle before the local cutoff.
When does a Connections streak reset?
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in your timezone. To preserve a current streak, finish that day’s puzzle before midnight local time. If you finish after local midnight, the streak breaks and a new one begins; NYT says a broken Connections streak cannot be reset. There is no stated grace period. Check the official Connections FAQ for the timing and streak rules.

Can you play old Connections puzzles?
Yes, if you have an All Access or Games subscription. The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, according to NYT’s Help Center. Archive play affects some statistics, but it does not count toward either your current or maximum streak. Once you complete an archived puzzle, you cannot replay it.
Where to find the archive
- In a browser, go to nytimes.com/crosswords and use the navigation menu.
- In the Games app, open the Connections Archive section.
The archive is not available in the News app’s Play tab. NYT’s Games app help covers app access and navigation.

What do Connections stats and the Bot show?
The stats page lists puzzles completed, win rate, current streak, maximum streak, perfect puzzles, and a histogram of mistakes. NYT says stats reflect puzzles played from June 15, 2024 onward. Archive puzzles can affect some statistics, but do not add to current or maximum streaks.
Connections Bot is a post-game analysis feature for All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers. It can show how your performance compares on difficulty, let you rate a puzzle, report category difficulty and solve order, describe common mistakes using AI-generated descriptions, and analyze your guesses one by one. It is separate from the free daily puzzle.

How do you share Connections results?
After submitting your final guess, open the statistics page and choose Share Your Results. The available sharing options depend on your device. If you choose the copy button, you can paste the result into any text field, such as a social post, email, or message. NYT describes this process in its Connections Help Center.
