1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a current macOS Hackintosh desktop, AMD is generally the practical choice for graphics acceleration; Nvidia is a legacy option for older macOS releases, not a sound buy for current macOS support. Compatibility still depends on the exact GPU, macOS version, and system configuration. An AMD Radeon RX 6600 is one documented example, but it is not a universal guarantee—especially for macOS Tahoe.
Why AMD is the practical choice for current macOS
Apple does not provide official macOS drivers for modern PC Nvidia GPUs. Dortania’s GPU Buyers Guide says Monterey removed support for all Nvidia GPUs, including Kepler, and describes no official later macOS drivers for Maxwell, Pascal, Turing, or Ampere. Nvidia Web Drivers and legacy patching guidance apply to older macOS targets; they do not provide a route to official support in current releases.

AMD has several GPU families supported by macOS, but that does not mean every Radeon card works. The guide’s compatibility tables are chiefly marked through Sequoia, and identify both supported families and specific exceptions. Check the exact GPU chip and card against the AMD GPU guide before buying or configuring a system.
GPU compatibility at a glance
| Decision | Nvidia | AMD |
|---|---|---|
| Current macOS Hackintosh graphics | No official support from Monterey onward in Dortania’s account, including Kepler; newer architectures also lack official later macOS drivers. | Multiple families are supported, but support is model- and version-specific. |
| Older macOS targets | Some older Nvidia architectures had Web Driver support on older releases. Dortania says Maxwell and Pascal Web Drivers do not extend to Mojave or later, leaving High Sierra as the target in its description. | Older AMD families may suit older macOS targets; confirm the guide’s support limit for the specific card. |
| Documented example | Do not choose a recent GeForce card as the macOS display and acceleration GPU based on the cited guidance. | RX 6600 is listed as verified in the guide’s Navi 23 material, chiefly covering Sequoia. |
| Key setup concern | An unsupported card may fall back to basic VESA behavior, with stability and sleep limitations described by Dortania. | Tahoe has separate AMD connector-patching concerns; the exact card and configuration remain important. |
| Laptops | Discrete laptop graphics often face unsupported switchable-graphics wiring. | The same wiring limitation applies; AMD branding alone does not solve display routing. |
Which AMD GPU families are worth checking?
Polaris and Vega
Dortania lists Polaris and Vega 10 support through Sequoia. Most Polaris cards use the supported Ellesmere or Baffin cores, but there are exceptions: some RX 550 variants using Lexa may need spoofing, and the guide names the RX 580 2048SP and RX 590 GME as exceptions. Check the chip variant rather than relying only on the Radeon model name.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Navi 23: RX 6600 as a concrete example
The RX 6600 appears as verified in the guide’s Navi 23 list. That makes it a useful model to investigate for a Sequoia-oriented desktop build, not an Apple-certified or across-the-board guarantee. Confirm the precise card variant, macOS target, and current configuration notes before purchase.
Other Navi families
The guide says Navi 22 needs the work-in-progress NootRX kext and is not natively supported; it lists Navi 3x and Navi 24 as unsupported. This is why a broad statement such as “AMD works” is not enough to choose a GPU.

What changes with macOS Tahoe?
Dortania’s Tahoe notes report AMD connector-patching issues involving WhateverGreen on macOS 26. They describe removing WhateverGreen in a kernel-panic scenario and a manual patch route when agdpmod=pikera is required. These are configuration-specific instructions, not a general fix for every card; consult the current guide before applying changes.
The RX 6600’s verified listing in the AMD guide should not be read as proof of universal Tahoe compatibility. The AMD tables chiefly identify Sequoia support, while Tahoe has its own configuration caveats.

Why laptop graphics need a separate answer
A desktop GPU recommendation does not transfer directly to a laptop. Dortania notes that many discrete laptop GPUs use switchable-graphics wiring that is unsupported. Whether the internal display is connected through an integrated GPU, and whether that iGPU is itself supported, can determine what is usable. Investigate the laptop’s display path and graphics arrangement; choosing an AMD-branded laptop GPU does not remove the wiring issue.
Check the rest of the system before choosing a card
A supported GPU family is only one part of compatibility. Dortania’s OpenCore hardware limitations notes that newer AMD drivers require SSE4.2 for Metal support and flags AVX2 requirements in modern macOS and Polaris GPU drivers. An older CPU can therefore constrain a build even when its GPU appears on a supported list.

- Match the exact GPU chip and card variant to the guide’s entries and exceptions.
- Check the target macOS release; a compatibility entry for one release does not establish support for another.
- For Tahoe, read the current connector-patching notes before settling on a card or configuration.
- For laptops, establish which GPU drives the internal display and whether that graphics path is supported.
- Review CPU instruction-set requirements alongside GPU support.
How to choose between Nvidia and AMD
- For a current macOS desktop build: start with an AMD model explicitly listed for your target release. Treat the RX 6600 as a Sequoia-oriented example to verify, not a blanket Tahoe recommendation.
- For a system that already has Nvidia: identify its architecture and intended macOS release. Older Web Driver support is limited to older macOS versions; do not assume a newer OS will gain drivers.
- For a laptop: research the display wiring and integrated graphics before comparing discrete GPU brands.
- Before purchase or installation: verify the exact model, macOS version, card configuration, and current Dortania guidance. Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list enumerates supported Mac models; it does not certify Hackintosh PC components.
This is a driver and compatibility comparison, not a performance ranking: no controlled Nvidia-versus-AMD benchmark, price comparison, power comparison, or systematic success-rate data is established by the cited guides.
