Nvidia vs. AMD for AI: Chips, Platforms, and Business Scale Compared

AMD’s MI355X is a GPU accelerator; Nvidia’s Vera Rubin is a six-chip platform. Here’s what their specifications, deployments, and differently dated revenue reports do—and don’t—show about choosing for AI.

Neither Nvidia nor AMD can be declared the better AI supplier for every workload from the available evidence. AMD’s MI355X is a specific data-center GPU with published memory specifications; Nvidia’s announced Vera Rubin is a six-chip, rack-scale platform, so those examples are not direct chip-to-chip equivalents. Nvidia’s reported business was much larger in its fiscal 2026 results than AMD’s in fiscal 2025, but those periods do not align. For a buying decision, compare complete systems on the workload, software, memory, power, availability, and total cost you actually need.

What is being compared: an accelerator or a whole AI system?

“Nvidia vs. AMD” can mean two different comparisons. At the chip level, compare accelerators with comparable roles and configurations. At the system level, compare complete deployments, including CPUs, accelerators, memory, networking, software, and power requirements. Mixing those levels can make a platform claim look like a direct GPU comparison when it is not.

AMD Instinct MI355X: a specific GPU accelerator

AMD describes the MI350 series as data-center GPUs for AI and high-performance computing. Its MI355X specifications list 288 GB of HBM3E memory and 8 TB/s of memory bandwidth; AMD gives June 12, 2025, as the product’s launch date. These are product specifications, not evidence that the MI355X will outperform another accelerator on a particular application.

Nvidia Vera Rubin: a multi-chip platform

Nvidia announced Vera Rubin as a platform comprising six chips: the Vera CPU, Rubin GPU, NVLink switch, ConnectX SuperNIC, BlueField DPU, and Spectrum Ethernet switch. That makes it a rack-scale system design, not one GPU. A fair system comparison would put a complete AMD deployment alongside a complete Rubin system; a chip-level comparison would instead require a comparable Nvidia accelerator and matched test conditions. Nvidia’s Rubin announcement describes the platform and its own performance claims, but does not turn them into independent benchmark results.

What do the published specifications establish?

Memory capacity and bandwidth help identify what a device is designed to support, but neither alone predicts application speed. Results depend on the model, batch size, sequence length, precision, software stack, server configuration, and how much work can run in parallel. Peak theoretical throughput is likewise not a substitute for a workload-matched benchmark.

AMD publishes peak theoretical comparisons between MI350 products and Nvidia’s B200. AMD says its Performance Labs calculated those figures in May 2025 and cautions that results can vary with server configuration, datatype, and workload. Read the comparison as AMD’s vendor-authored theoretical analysis, not a neutral finding about real-world superiority. The relevant qualifications appear on the MI350 series page.

The cited material does not establish an independent, matched test that picks an overall winner across AI training and inference. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in Nvidia’s February 25, 2026 results release that “Grace Blackwell with NVLink is the king of inference today” and claimed an “order-of-magnitude lower cost per token,” adding that Vera Rubin would extend that leadership. Those are Huang’s claims on behalf of Nvidia, not independent measurements of every workload or a comparison with MI355X.

How large are the two businesses?

The reported figures show Nvidia at a much larger scale in the cited periods. They are not a same-fiscal-year comparison: Nvidia’s figures are for fiscal 2026, while AMD’s are for fiscal 2025.

Company and period Total revenue Data-center revenue Source
Nvidia, fiscal 2026 $215.9 billion $193.7 billion Nvidia fiscal 2026 results
AMD, fiscal 2025 $34.6 billion $16.6 billion AMD fiscal 2025 annual report

These totals show corporate and data-center revenue, not AI-accelerator revenue alone, and they should not be used to infer a precise AI market-share ratio. AMD also says it combined its Client and Gaming businesses into one reportable segment beginning in fiscal 2025, which affects how its segment presentation compares with earlier years. The available figures do not provide a synchronized, like-for-like breakdown of all revenue segments for both companies.

Are customers deploying these products?

Company announcements provide evidence of deployments and planned cloud availability, but customer names are not a market-share measurement.

  • Nvidia: Nvidia named AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as planned early deployers of Vera Rubin in its fiscal 2026 results release. “Planned” describes the status in that announcement; it is not evidence that every provider has already made a service generally available.

How should you choose between Nvidia and AMD?

There is no support here for a universal best-chip verdict. Evaluate the specific deployment you are considering rather than extrapolating from company size, peak specifications, or a platform announcement.

  1. Match the workload. Use the same model and representative training or inference task, with equivalent input sizes, batch sizes, and serving targets. Record whether the priority is throughput, latency, or both.
  2. Match precision and memory needs. Check the datatype used in the test, memory capacity, and bandwidth. Confirm that the model and its working data fit the proposed configuration; avoid comparing peak figures calculated under different precision assumptions.
  3. Compare complete configurations. Include the number and type of accelerators, CPUs, memory, interconnect, and networking. Do not compare one MI355X card’s specifications with a rack-level Vera Rubin claim as if they described equivalent systems.
  4. Verify software fit. Test the frameworks, libraries, kernels, and deployment tools your application needs on the exact proposed hardware. The cited material does not establish a neutral, current Nvidia-versus-AMD software compatibility or migration comparison.
  5. Get deployment-specific power and cost evidence. Ask vendors or providers for comparable system quotes, power draw under the target workload, delivery timing, and service availability in your region. The cited sources do not establish neutral current transaction prices, regional inventory, or matched power-to-performance results.
  6. Require benchmark provenance. A useful result identifies who ran the test, the date, hardware and software configuration, workload, datatype, and measurement method. Vendor peak-theoretical comparisons can inform what to investigate, but do not answer how your application will perform.

What the comparison supports—and what it does not

The clearest supported conclusions are that Nvidia reported a substantially larger business in its cited fiscal period, AMD has a concrete MI355X accelerator with published HBM3E specifications, and Nvidia has announced Vera Rubin as a system-scale platform with named planned cloud deployers. None of those facts establishes which option will deliver better performance or lower cost for a particular AI workload. That answer requires comparable systems, current availability and pricing, and a benchmark representative of the work you intend to run.
