You can make an Android phone feel more familiar to an iPhone user without replacing Android: simplify the home screen, group favorite apps, add a few useful widgets, and try gesture navigation. Pixel phones also offer built-in wallpaper colors and icon options, while a third-party launcher can provide more layout control. The exact menus and features depend on your phone and Android version, so these steps aim for a cleaner, more consistent feel—not an exact iOS replica.
1. Start with a simpler home screen
Android lets you move apps and shortcuts, create folders, add widgets, and use multiple home-screen pages. Some Android Help instructions apply only to Android 14 and later; menu names and behavior can also differ by manufacturer. See Google’s instructions for adding apps, shortcuts, and widgets.

- Remove shortcuts you do not use. Touch and hold an unwanted app icon on the Home screen and choose the option to remove it. Removing a shortcut is not the same as uninstalling the app; the app remains installed and can usually be found in the app drawer.
- Keep a small set of favorites close at hand. Put your most-used apps in the bottom dock if your phone provides one, and arrange the rest on one or more pages.
- Group related apps in folders. Drag one app icon onto another, if supported, to create a folder, then add related apps such as messaging or travel tools. This reduces visual clutter without hiding apps in system settings.
- Choose a home-screen arrangement and stick with it. A modest number of pages, a consistent order, and a limited set of visible icons can make the phone easier to scan.
Avoid disabling preinstalled system apps just to tidy the screen. Google warns that disabling apps can cause problems and may delete associated app data. If the goal is simply a cleaner display, remove the shortcut or change the relevant setting instead. See Google’s guidance on adding or disabling apps.

2. Add only the widgets you will use
Widgets show information or controls from an app directly on the Home screen, so you can check useful details without opening the app. To add one, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, open the Widgets picker, choose a widget, and place it. Some widgets can be resized after you add them; available choices depend on the app and device. Google explains the process in its Home screen instructions.

Start with one or two practical widgets—such as a calendar or weather view—rather than filling the screen. A widget that takes up space but rarely helps makes the layout less usable, not more iPhone-like.
3. Try gesture navigation if you prefer swipes
Android supports gesture navigation as well as three-button navigation. On a Pixel, look under Settings > System > Navigation mode. On some other phones, the setting may be under Settings > System > Gestures > Navigation mode. If neither path matches, search Settings for “navigation” or check the phone maker’s instructions; Google notes that menus vary by device. Its navigation guide covers the options.

Choose gesture navigation to move around with swipes, or keep the three-button layout if it is more comfortable. Google recommends buttons for people who have difficulty with precise gestures. If back gestures interfere with swiping in an app, adjust edge sensitivity if your phone offers that control; otherwise, switching back to buttons is a reasonable fix.
4. Match wallpaper and icons where your phone supports it
On compatible Pixel phones, open Settings > Wallpaper & style to choose wallpaper and color options; some devices also offer icon customization there. These are Pixel-specific examples, not a universal Android menu. Google’s steps are in Change wallpaper on your Pixel phone.

Wallpaper-based themed icons are not guaranteed to recolor every app. Android’s developer documentation says the feature depends on the user enabling it, the launcher supporting it, and the app providing a monochrome icon layer. As a result, some icons may keep their original appearance. See Android’s adaptive icon documentation.
5. Consider At a Glance on a Pixel
If you use a Pixel, At a Glance is an optional widget that can show timely information on the Home or lock screen. Google says its full experience is available on Pixel devices running Android 12 or later; it is not a general-purpose feature to expect on every Android phone. 6. Use a third-party launcher for more control
If the built-in home screen does not offer the layout or icon options you want, you can try a third-party launcher. Android supports apps that replace the device’s launcher, but that platform support does not guarantee that every launcher feature works on every phone. Try built-in changes first, then install a launcher only if you still need more control. The sources establish different customization options, not a measured comparison of speed or battery life.
What to expect
These changes can make Android simpler to navigate and more visually consistent, but they do not turn it into iOS. Android’s settings and launcher features vary across manufacturers and versions, and themed icons may not cover every app. You can keep the setup entirely within the built-in software or add a launcher if its extra controls suit you.
