Nvidia stock slips: How Broadcom and Microsoft are shaking the chip sector

Nvidia and Broadcom slipped in premarket trading as chip stocks extended losses. The move came amid concern about China’s CXMT, while Broadcom’s custom AI silicon and Microsoft’s cloud investment reshape the competitive backdrop.

Nvidia and Broadcom each fell about 1% in premarket trading on October 13, 2026, extending the semiconductor sector’s decline from the prior session. The Associated Press attributed the market mood to investor concern that China’s CXMT could challenge established memory-chip suppliers Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. That report did not establish that Broadcom or Microsoft caused Nvidia’s move. Their importance is longer term: Broadcom is expanding in custom AI accelerators and networking, while Microsoft is scaling Azure and investing heavily in cloud and AI infrastructure.

What happened to Nvidia stock on October 13?

The roughly 1% declines were a premarket snapshot, not the regular-session closing prices. AP reported that chipmakers were already lower the previous day, so the October 13 move represented continued sector weakness rather than an isolated Nvidia event. Premarket trading can change materially before the opening bell and during the session.

The immediate concern described by AP involved memory chips. Investors were weighing whether China’s CXMT could become a stronger competitor to Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. That is a potential shift in the memory supply chain; it is not evidence that CXMT directly caused every semiconductor stock to fall, nor does it prove a specific link to Nvidia’s daily price.

Why the Broadcom and Microsoft connection matters

Broadcom and Microsoft occupy different positions from Nvidia. Broadcom supplies custom silicon and networking used in AI systems, while Microsoft operates a major cloud platform and funds the infrastructure needed to run AI workloads. Their results help explain why investors are reassessing where AI spending may accrue, but company disclosures do not verify a direct trading catalyst on October 13.

Broadcom: custom accelerators and networking

Broadcom reported fiscal third-quarter 2026 revenue of $29.6 billion for the quarter ended August 2. AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year. For the fourth quarter, the company forecast AI semiconductor revenue of $21.7 billion and total revenue of approximately $34.8 billion. Those figures are guidance issued September 2, 2026, not realized fourth-quarter sales.

Chief executive Hock Tan said, “Demand for our custom AI accelerators and networking continues to be very strong.” The statement reflects management’s view, not independent confirmation of future demand. Custom accelerators can give large cloud operators an alternative to buying only merchant GPUs, while high-speed networking remains essential as AI clusters grow.

Microsoft: the cloud customer and infrastructure investor

Microsoft’s fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results, released July 29, provide the demand-side context. Revenue was $90.0 billion, Microsoft Cloud revenue was $59.3 billion, and Azure and other cloud services revenue increased 43% year over year. Microsoft also described continued investment in cloud and AI infrastructure.

Microsoft is relevant because cloud capacity determines how quickly customers can access AI computing. However, the reviewed release does not quantify a particular Nvidia or Broadcom chip purchase and does not connect Microsoft’s spending to the October 13 stock move. Microsoft identified customer demand, technology and competition as factors that affect the returns on its investments.

Satya Nadella said Microsoft was “advancing the frontier on the cost-to-outcome curve, ensuring every customer can turn tokens into business results.” That is an executive characterization of the company’s strategy, not proof of a guaranteed return on infrastructure spending.

Nvidia’s operating results remain exceptionally strong

NVIDIA reported fiscal second-quarter 2027 revenue of $96.2 billion for the quarter ended July 26, up 106% year over year. Data Center revenue reached $89.0 billion, up 117%. The company’s fiscal third-quarter outlook was $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%.

That outlook assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. The assumption matters because export restrictions and Chinese competition can affect the addressable market, even while demand elsewhere remains strong. The $108.0 billion figure is guidance, not a completed quarter.

NVIDIA founder and chief executive Jensen Huang said, “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” The reported results support rapid growth in NVIDIA’s Data Center business, but the quotation is management’s interpretation of the market.

What investors should watch next

Premarket versus closing performance

The October 13 figures describe trading before the regular session. Any assessment of the day’s actual performance should use the closing prices and volume after the market shuts.

AI spending mix

Investors will be watching whether hyperscalers continue buying general-purpose accelerators, develop more custom chips, or spend proportionally more on networking. Broadcom’s reported growth indicates momentum in custom silicon and connectivity, while NVIDIA’s figures show that accelerator demand remains substantial.

China exposure and memory competition

CXMT’s potential challenge to established memory suppliers adds a supply-chain risk to an already competitive sector. NVIDIA’s guidance excluding China Data Center compute revenue shows that geographic assumptions are already part of its outlook.

Upcoming Microsoft results

Microsoft Investor Relations listed October 28, 2026, for the next fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings release when accessed on October 13. Calendars can change, so the date should be checked again before relying on it. Azure growth, capital spending and comments on AI capacity will help investors gauge cloud demand, but still will not by themselves identify the cause of a single trading session.

Bottom line for the chip sector

Nvidia’s October 13 premarket slip occurred amid a broader semiconductor pullback and concern about China’s CXMT, not from a confirmed Broadcom-or-Microsoft trigger. The competitive thesis is still important. NVIDIA is reporting extraordinary Data Center growth; Broadcom is taking a larger role in custom accelerators and networking; and Microsoft is expanding the cloud infrastructure that consumes those technologies. Those trends can reshape industry economics over time, while the evidence available for October 13 supports caution about assigning a precise cause to the day’s price move.
