There is no evidence-based universal winner between NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS. The result depends on the specific feature and version, the game’s implementation, your GPU, the output resolution, and the mode you select. Compare upscaling separately from frame generation: upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution render, while frame generation inserts generated frames between frames rendered by the game. A higher displayed frame rate with generation enabled is not the same as a higher rate of directly rendered frames.
What DLSS, FSR, and XeSS actually do
DLSS, FSR, and XeSS are names for evolving technology families, not three single algorithms that can be ranked with one score. A game may implement several features from a family, and each feature can have different hardware requirements. The first question is therefore not simply “Which upscaler is best?” It is “Which feature, in which game and version, on which GPU, at which settings?”

Upscaling reconstructs an image
With a super-resolution or upscaling mode enabled, a game renders its scene at a lower internal resolution than the final output and reconstructs an image for the display resolution. This can reduce the rendering work compared with rendering every pixel at the output resolution. The trade-off is that the displayed image is reconstructed rather than produced directly at that resolution. Detail, aliasing, ghosting, shimmer, and temporal stability can vary with the game, mode, motion, and implementation.

DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FSR upscaling, and Intel XeSS Super Resolution are the relevant features for this kind of comparison. Their names do not guarantee identical methods, input resolutions, quality modes, or results. To compare them fairly, use the same game, output resolution, graphics settings, and equivalent upscaling modes where the game offers them.

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames
Frame generation creates frames that are displayed between traditionally rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother and increase the displayed frame rate, but those generated frames are not additional frames in which the game has newly rendered and updated the scene in the ordinary way. Keep the directly rendered rate and the post-generation displayed rate separate when judging performance.
This distinction matters most when responsiveness is important. A large displayed-frame number alone does not tell you how quickly the game responds to input or how often it renders new game frames. Compare responsiveness and frame pacing alongside both frame-rate figures. The effect is specific to the game, hardware, settings, and implementation; a multiplier by itself cannot establish that a setup will feel responsive.
Other suite features are not interchangeable
DLSS also includes Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. AMD and Intel likewise describe suites with multiple components, although the exact features and eligibility differ. These functions address different parts of rendering: an anti-aliasing mode is not the same test as an upscaler, and a ray-reconstruction feature is not a frame-rate result. Make sure the feature you are evaluating is the one named in the game’s settings and in any performance or image-quality comparison.

| Family | Documented features and methods | Hardware qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DLSS | Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. NVIDIA describes DLSS as a neural-rendering suite powered by RTX Tensor Cores. Its DLSS 4.5 overview describes a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, plus Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. | Eligibility varies by feature. NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series for Multi Frame Generation. Its developer information describes generation of up to five frames per rendered frame on supported GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell products. |
| AMD FSR | A family of upscaling and frame-generation technologies. AMD describes FSR 4 as ML-accelerated upscaling; AMD GPUOpen describes FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 as using ML-based inference. | Requirements vary by revision and component. AMD GPUOpen describes FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 for Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete graphics architectures. AMD tied FSR 4 support at launch to Radeon RX 9070 Series graphics and supported games; check current support information for later changes. |
| Intel XeSS | Intel’s XeSS 2 whitepaper documents XeSS Super Resolution (XeSS-SR), XeSS Frame Generation (XeSS-FG), and Xe Low Latency (XeLL). Intel’s developer information now presents XeSS 3 and multi-frame-generation features. | The XeSS 2 whitepaper describes XeSS-SR as supporting cross-vendor platforms that meet specified graphics capability requirements, while XeSS-FG is described as supported on Intel Arc GPUs with XMX acceleration. Do not assume XeSS 2 and XeSS 3 have identical eligibility. |
Why the version matters
A suite name can conceal meaningful changes. A claim about one version does not establish the capability of every version, and an older feature description should not be silently applied to a newer release. For example, Intel’s XeSS 2 whitepaper gives specific descriptions of XeSS-SR, XeSS-FG, and XeLL; Intel’s current developer information also presents XeSS 3. Those are distinct pieces of versioned information, not proof that every XeSS 3 feature follows the XeSS 2 whitepaper’s exact compatibility rules.
AMD’s materials also span different descriptions and hardware generations. The FSR family should not be reduced to a single GPU rule: upscaling and frame-generation components, as well as revisions of those components, can have different requirements. Verify the exact feature and current game support rather than treating “FSR support” as a guarantee that every FSR option is available on a particular card.
Which is better: DLSS or FSR?
Neither label alone answers that question. A fair image-quality comparison needs the same game build, scene, output resolution, graphics preset, and comparable upscaling mode. It must also identify the feature versions and whether frame generation is enabled. If those conditions differ, an apparent advantage may come from the game, settings, or test setup rather than the upscaler.

Look at both still images and motion. Still crops can reveal detail and aliasing, but they cannot show every temporal issue. Inspect camera movement, foliage, particles, fine text, and areas revealed as objects move out of the way. A mode that looks clean in one paused frame may behave differently during motion. Conversely, a small still-image difference may not be important in the games or scenes you actually play.

No neutral, independently measured head-to-head result covering all three technologies under matched conditions is established in the evidence summarized here. NVIDIA’s, AMD’s, and Intel’s feature descriptions establish what their respective technologies are intended to do; they do not by themselves establish a cross-vendor image-quality ranking. NVIDIA’s performance multipliers are scenario-specific company claims, not results that can be directly compared with another vendor’s figure from a different game or setup.
Is XeSS better than DLSS?
There is no supported universal ranking. XeSS and DLSS have different feature families, versions, and hardware eligibility, while image quality also depends on each game’s integration and chosen mode. XeSS-SR’s cross-vendor support description applies to platforms meeting Intel’s specified graphics requirements; it does not mean every XeSS feature runs on every GPU. XeSS-FG has a separate support description tied to Intel Arc GPUs with XMX acceleration in the XeSS 2 whitepaper.
For a specific game, compare the available XeSS and DLSS modes at the same output resolution and settings, then inspect motion and fine detail. If one feature is not supported by your GPU or is not offered by that game, a theoretical comparison of the families is not useful for your setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes FSR work on Nvidia cards?
FSR is a family, so the answer depends on which FSR feature and version you mean. AMD GPUOpen describes FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 as using ML-based inference for Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete graphics architectures. AMD’s launch information for FSR 4 tied support to Radeon RX 9070 Series graphics and supported games. These descriptions should not be generalized into a promise that every FSR revision or feature will work on an NVIDIA GPU.

Check the current feature requirements and the options exposed in the specific game. General availability of an FSR option in a game does not prove that every FSR component is available on every card. The distinction between upscaling and frame generation matters here too: support for one does not automatically establish support for the other.
What graphics cards support DLSS?
There is no single hardware answer for the whole DLSS suite. NVIDIA describes DLSS as powered by RTX Tensor Cores, but the individual features have their own eligibility. In particular, NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series for Multi Frame Generation; its developer information describes up to five generated frames per rendered frame on supported GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell products. That is a vendor capability statement for specified hardware, not a claim that every DLSS feature or game is limited to those products.
Before choosing a setting, verify the GPU requirement for the exact DLSS feature and the game’s implementation. Do not infer Multi Frame Generation support from the fact that a card can use another DLSS feature.

- Choose one game and build. Use the same game version and scene for every option. Record the feature version or mode where the game exposes it.
- Match the output and settings. Keep output resolution and graphics preset the same. Select comparable upscaling modes, and say which mode each technology uses.
- Record the GPU and feature eligibility. Identify the tested GPU and confirm that it supports the exact feature being measured. Do not treat general family support as proof that a particular generation or frame-generation feature is available.
- Run a baseline without frame generation. Record average and low-percentile rendered frame rates before generation. This shows how quickly the game is producing frames itself.
- Measure with generation enabled separately. Report the displayed frame rate after generation as a different figure. Label it clearly; do not present it as the directly rendered frame rate.
- Evaluate responsiveness and frame pacing. State the latency measurement and method if available. If there is no latency measurement, do not imply that a displayed-frame increase proves improved responsiveness.
- Inspect image behavior in motion. Compare still crops and moving footage, paying attention to temporal stability, disocclusion, text, foliage, particles, and camera motion.
When comparing published figures, check whether each result uses the same game, GPU class, resolution, settings, and complete feature configuration. A vendor’s best-case multiplier in one scenario cannot be fairly set against another vendor’s result from a different scenario. If any of these conditions differ, treat the numbers as separate examples rather than a head-to-head verdict.
Why can upscaling look different in motion?
An upscaler reconstructs an image over time, so a paused frame is only part of the picture. Camera movement, newly revealed areas, fine repeated detail, foliage, particles, and small text can expose differences that are less visible in a static view. The particular result depends on the game’s implementation, feature version, internal render resolution, and selected mode.
When an image looks unstable, first make sure the compared captures really use the same output resolution, scene, graphics settings, and mode. Then inspect the same area while the camera moves and when objects uncover previously hidden parts of the scene. Compare the game’s available modes rather than assuming the same named quality setting represents the same internal render resolution across different technologies.
Does frame generation increase input lag?
A generated frame is not the same as a newly rendered game frame, so the displayed-frame count alone cannot answer a responsiveness question. Whether a particular setup feels responsive depends on the game, baseline rendered performance, hardware, settings, and latency-related features. Measure latency or test responsiveness in the game rather than treating a high post-generation number as a substitute for that evidence.
For competitive play, prioritize responsiveness and baseline rendered performance over a large generated-frame counter alone. For slower-paced games, smoother displayed motion may be valuable, but it remains a separate benefit from the rate at which the game renders and updates new frames.
Choose the option that fits your GPU and games
Start with what your games actually support, not a family-wide ranking. A feature that looks compelling in an unsupported game, or requires hardware you do not have, cannot improve your current setup. Use this decision order:
- Check the game. Confirm which specific upscaling, frame-generation, or other feature it offers.
- Check the GPU. Verify compatibility for that feature and version, not just for the vendor’s technology family.
- Compare at your target resolution. Match the output resolution, graphics preset, and mode before judging detail or performance.
- Watch motion. Inspect the kinds of scenes where reconstruction artifacts are easiest to notice.
- Weigh performance and responsiveness separately. Keep rendered frame rate, generated/displayed frame rate, and latency distinct.
If you are deciding whether to change graphics cards, base the decision on the games you play and the exact features they support. A family name or vendor multiplier cannot establish how a different GPU will perform in your game. If you already own a compatible card, comparing the actual options in a game you play is more useful than assuming one technology wins everywhere.
