As of October 13, 2026, no final technical report, affected-model list, verified loss total, or completed review of Ledger’s broader sales policies has been published.
What happened and when

The incident is therefore narrower than the headline “Ledger to Review Sale Policies After Crypto Spyware Attack” suggests. A hardware implant has been confirmed in one device, but public information does not establish that the component was spyware, that every CryptoBilis device was altered, or that Ledger has completed a company-wide policy review.

What buyers from CryptoBilis should do
Ledger’s reported October 9 guidance divided buyers by whether a device had been initialized. Because incident instructions can change, check Ledger’s current official support and incident notices before taking action.

- If the device is still unopened: do not initialize it. Keep the packaging and purchase records intact while awaiting current instructions.
- If the device was already initialized and holds assets: consider moving those assets to another trusted Ledger signer using a newly generated recovery seed, following Ledger’s current procedure.
- Use a new seed: do not reuse the existing recovery phrase on a replacement or second device if the original device may have been tampered with.
- Contact support through official channels: never disclose a recovery phrase, PIN, or passphrase to anyone claiming to investigate the incident or recover funds.
Keep evidence such as order confirmations, serial-number information, packaging photographs, transaction records, and messages from the seller. Do not rely on an unsolicited “inspection” or “recovery” service that requests your recovery phrase.

Is the Ledger Nano X affected?
There is no public, definitive affected-model or batch list. BleepingComputer reported that online researchers discussed possible implants in Ledger X or Nano X devices, while also noting that Ledger had not disclosed the compromised device type. That discussion is not confirmation that Nano X is the only affected model, or that every Nano X sold through CryptoBilis is compromised.
Until Ledger publishes model and batch criteria, a product name alone cannot establish either safety or compromise. Treat any social-media list of serial numbers or models as unverified unless Ledger confirms it through an official channel.
Was this spyware, and were Ledger’s systems hacked?
Ledger has publicly described the confirmed finding as an “unauthorized hardware implant.” It has not published a final technical explanation showing what the component did, how it was installed, or whether it collected secrets. Calling the incident “spyware” goes beyond the confirmed evidence.

In its reported October 11 update, Ledger said its own systems and direct sales channels were not compromised and that the confirmed cases involved devices sold through CryptoBilis. That is Ledger’s account of the incident, not an independent forensic finding about every reseller or device.
A separate 2023 incident involved malicious code in the Ledger Connect Kit, a software supply-chain event. It is relevant background on Ledger’s published remediation practices, but it does not explain the 2026 hardware incident or prove that a sales-policy review has occurred.
How much cryptocurrency was stolen?
No verified total or affected-customer count is available. The Block reported two separate on-chain estimates: more than $72 million attributed to researcher tanuki42 in 2026, and more than $86 million attributed to researcher Specter in 2026. Both figures were unconfirmed, and the reporting said the analyses could overlap. They should be treated as estimates of observed on-chain activity, not confirmed customer losses.

Can an authorized reseller still be trusted?
Authorization is useful but is not proof that a device could not later be tampered with. When buying or evaluating a device through any channel, check these points:
- Who is the seller of record and who fulfilled the order?
- Does Ledger currently list that seller for your country or region?
- Is there a traceable purchase record, with packaging and custody intact?
- What return, replacement, and official-support routes apply?
- What does Ledger’s authenticity check actually verify, and what can it not detect?
Ledger’s website sales terms identify Global-e as the seller under the consumer sale terms for online purchases, with regional seller details that can vary. Those terms describe the Ledger.com transaction structure; they do not document every local reseller arrangement or establish that authorization eliminates supply-chain risk.

Ledger’s shop privacy policy, updated in March 2026, describes how hardware-sale customer data is collected, used, protected, and subject to access, correction, or deletion requests, subject to legal retention duties. The sales terms state that personal data may be processed by both Ledger and Global-e and link to their respective privacy policies.

Ledger Recover has a separate privacy policy, last updated in October 2023, covering a service involving Coincover and other providers. That document should not be used to infer how hardware-sale customers’ information was handled in the CryptoBilis matter. Ledger’s Legal Center lists sales terms, product manuals, replacement terms, Recover documents, and affiliate terms separately; the separation helps identify the relevant document but is not evidence of a post-incident policy change.
What remains unresolved
- The technical function and installation path of the unauthorized implant.
- The exact models, serial ranges, batches, and countries affected.
- The number of affected devices and customers.
- A verified, non-overlapping loss total.
- Whether Ledger will change reseller vetting, fulfillment, or other sales controls.
For now, the defensible conclusion is that Ledger has taken an interim step against CryptoBilis while investigating a limited set of reported losses, and has confirmed one implanted device. A broader policy review remains conditional until Ledger announces one or publishes a final investigation.
