If Multi Frame Generation (MFG) is important to your next gaming laptop, start with the GPU generation: NVIDIA lists MFG for GeForce RTX 50 Series laptop GPUs. RTX 40 Series laptops support DLSS Frame Generation, a different feature. Then check whether the games you play support MFG and compare the exact laptop configuration; the feature name alone cannot predict its frame rate.
What DLSS Multi Frame Generation does
DLSS is NVIDIA’s family of AI-assisted rendering technologies. Multi Frame Generation creates additional frames between frames rendered by the GPU. That can raise the number of frames displayed, but it does not mean the GPU conventionally rendered each displayed frame.

MFG is one part of DLSS, not another name for the whole suite. NVIDIA’s current DLSS technology overview lists Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series, while Frame Generation is listed for RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series. Other DLSS features, including Super Resolution, are supported across older RTX generations too.

| GPU generation | Frame-generation feature listed by NVIDIA | What that means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 50 Series | Multi Frame Generation and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation; also Frame Generation | Eligible for MFG, subject to game support or an applicable NVIDIA app override. |
| GeForce RTX 40 Series | Frame Generation | Supports DLSS Frame Generation, but not the MFG feature listed for RTX 50 Series. |
These are feature-family distinctions, not a ranking of laptop performance. A GPU generation by itself does not establish how many frames a particular laptop will deliver.

Why DLSS 4’s launch description differs from current MFG
At DLSS 4’s announcement on January 6, 2025, NVIDIA said MFG could generate up to three additional frames per traditionally rendered frame. That was NVIDIA’s launch description, not a guarantee for every game or laptop. Its current DLSS technology page describes later MFG modes generating up to five frames per rendered frame on RTX 50 Series. The maximum is a capability description; it does not mean every mode or supported game uses that maximum.
NVIDIA says DLSS 4.5 introduced Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and an updated transformer model for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction. So when a laptop listing says “DLSS 4,” check which feature and version-era capability it means rather than assuming every later MFG mode is included in that shorthand.

Check whether your games can use MFG
Support is title-specific. NVIDIA documents both native game support and overrides through the NVIDIA app, but an override is not universal compatibility. NVIDIA says its MFG override is for RTX 50 Series users when Frame Generation is enabled in the game. Check the NVIDIA DLSS 4 games information and the DLSS 4.5 enhanced Frame Generation supported-games information for the relevant titles; NVIDIA dates the latter information to March 31, 2026, so support may have changed since that snapshot.

How to assess laptop performance claims
More generated frames can increase displayed frame rate, but that is not the same as a proportional increase in conventionally rendered frames. The outcome depends on the game, settings, feature mode and laptop configuration. NVIDIA’s published figures should be read with their conditions, not treated as a prediction for any RTX 50 Series laptop.

For example, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 Series Gaming Laptops page presents a comparison with a 150W GPU TGP at 1440p and maximum settings. Those are conditions for that comparison, not specifications or a performance promise for every laptop carrying the same GPU family name. Compare reviews of the exact laptop model and configuration at your screen resolution and in the games you care about.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Filter by GPU generation. Choose an RTX 50 Series laptop if MFG is a requirement; an RTX 40 Series laptop offers Frame Generation instead.
- Verify the games. Check NVIDIA’s supported-game information and whether the game enables Frame Generation if you intend to use an app override.
- Check the exact laptop configuration. Compare the model’s GPU power configuration and independent tests, not just the GPU family name.
- Match the evidence to your use. Look for results at your intended resolution, settings and games; a comparison made at 1440p and 150W TGP may not describe a lower-power configuration or different workload.
- Compare local price and availability. These vary by market and retailer, and feature eligibility alone does not establish which laptop is the better value.
