NVIDIA DGX Spark vs. a Multi-GPU DIY Workstation for Local LLMs

DGX Spark offers 128 GB of unified memory and a preconfigured NVIDIA software stack; a DIY workstation offers more control over components and upgrades. The right choice depends on your models, software and measured workload.

Choose DGX Spark for a compact, preconfigured NVIDIA system with 128 GB of unified memory; choose a DIY multi-GPU workstation when you want to select and upgrade the components around a specific workload. Neither is the universal performance winner: the result depends on the DIY configuration, model, software and test conditions. NVIDIA publishes DGX Spark specifications and capability claims, but there is no directly comparable benchmark here against a specified DIY build.

What you are comparing

DGX Spark is an integrated Grace Blackwell desktop built around an Arm CPU and an integrated Blackwell GPU. NVIDIA supplies it with its DGX software environment. A multi-GPU DIY workstation is not one fixed product: its performance and practical limits depend on the GPUs, interconnect, memory, cooling, power supply, storage and software you assemble.

Decision point NVIDIA DGX Spark Multi-GPU DIY workstation
Memory approach 128 GB LPDDR5x unified system memory shared by the CPU and GPU, according to NVIDIA. Depends on the selected GPUs and software. Total VRAM across cards should not be treated automatically as one interchangeable memory pool.
Software starting point NVIDIA lists DGX OS, CUDA, cuDNN, Docker, NVIDIA Container Runtime and NGC integration. Depends on the chosen operating system, GPUs, drivers, frameworks, kernels and multi-GPU configuration.
Configuration and upgrades Compact integrated system; component selection and upgrades are more constrained than in a build assembled from separate parts. You choose the components and can plan upgrades around the workload, subject to compatibility, chassis, power and cooling constraints.
Performance evidence for this comparison NVIDIA publishes specifications and capability claims; these are not a head-to-head local LLM benchmark. No particular build or directly comparable benchmark is specified. Results depend on the actual configuration and test.

What DGX Spark’s specifications mean for local LLMs

Unified memory and model fit

NVIDIA’s current hardware guide lists a 20-core Arm CPU—10 Cortex-X925 cores and 10 Cortex-A725 cores—alongside an integrated Blackwell GPU, 128 GB of LPDDR5x unified memory and 273 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Unified memory can make a large memory capacity available across the CPU and GPU, but 128 GB does not mean every byte is available for model weights: the operating system, runtime, KV cache and other allocations also need memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whether a model fits depends on more than its parameter count. Quantization changes weight size; context length and concurrent requests affect KV-cache requirements; and framework and runtime overhead take additional memory. A model that loads successfully may still be too slow or unable to handle the context or concurrency you need.

NVIDIA’s stated model limits

NVIDIA says the 128 GB system supports inference for models up to 200 billion parameters and fine-tuning for models up to 70 billion parameters. Treat these as NVIDIA capability claims, not independent benchmarks or guarantees of a particular context length, generation speed, quantization, quality or software compatibility. Parameter count alone does not establish whether a specific workload will fit or perform well.

Peak compute is not token-generation speed

NVIDIA lists up to 1 PFLOP at FP4 with sparsity, as well as up to 1,000 TOPS for inference and 6,144 CUDA cores. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not a measured local LLM result. They do not tell you how many tokens per second a given model will generate: performance also depends on the model, precision or quantization, prompt, context, inference engine and workload.

What the integrated system includes

NVIDIA configures DGX Spark with DGX OS and developer tools including CUDA, cuDNN, Docker, NVIDIA Container Runtime and NGC integration. NVIDIA documents both direct use with a monitor, keyboard and mouse and network access through SSH, NVIDIA Sync or remote-desktop tools. This can reduce initial setup work if your intended framework and models fit the supplied environment; it does not remove the need to check compatibility for your specific workload.

NVIDIA describes networking up to four DGX Spark systems for larger workloads. That is a multi-system cluster path requiring additional systems and setup; it does not establish that their memory behaves as one directly interchangeable pool, nor does it show that a cluster will outperform a particular DIY workstation.

Where a DIY multi-GPU workstation can make more sense

You want to choose the hardware around a workload

A DIY build lets you select the GPU model and memory capacity, number of cards, storage, case, cooling, power supply and operating system. That control is useful when you already know the models and inference software you need to run, or when component upgrades matter more than an integrated footprint. It also makes the builder responsible for ensuring that the parts work together and that the chosen software supports the configuration.

You need to verify how multiple GPUs work together

Do not assume that adding GPU memory together produces the same experience as a single larger memory pool. A workload may need to distribute model layers or other work across cards, and its feasibility and speed depend on the inference engine, GPU compatibility, interconnect and configuration. Confirm support for your exact GPUs, framework, kernels and quantization method before buying parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are weighing flexibility against setup and support

With separate components, you can tailor the workstation and replace or upgrade parts individually, but you also take on component selection, assembly, software setup, compatibility checks and maintenance. DGX Spark trades some of that configuration freedom for an integrated device and NVIDIA’s preconfigured software stack. Support and service will depend on the purchase channel and applicable terms.

How to compare them for your own models

Before choosing, define a representative workload rather than comparing headline memory or compute numbers. Use the same model, quantization, context, prompt, output length, concurrency and inference engine on each candidate system.

  1. Write down the workload. Specify the model, quantization, target context length, expected output length and number of simultaneous requests. Include fine-tuning requirements separately if they matter.
  2. Estimate memory needs. Account for model weights, runtime overhead and KV cache at your target context and concurrency. Compare the usable memory available to the workload, not just a system’s advertised or summed memory capacity.
  3. Check software support. Verify that your framework, inference engine, kernels, quantization and multi-GPU method support the exact hardware and software versions you plan to use.
  4. Benchmark the same task. Measure prompt processing and token generation separately, using the same input and output lengths and concurrency. Record the exact settings; a result without those conditions is difficult to compare.
  5. Compare the whole system. Include configured purchase cost, local taxes and shipping, storage, whole-system idle and load power, cooling, noise, footprint, upgrade options and the time or support needed to keep it running. Confirm local price and availability when you are ready to buy.

NVIDIA’s guide provides DGX Spark specifications, but those figures alone cannot predict the result of this test. A fair performance decision needs measurements from your actual model and target workload on the specific systems being considered.

Which should you choose?

  • Lean toward DGX Spark if 128 GB of unified memory, a compact integrated system and NVIDIA’s preconfigured software environment align with your models and software, and you value a ready-made platform over choosing every component.
  • Lean toward a DIY workstation if you need control over GPU selection, storage, cooling or future upgrades, and you are prepared to verify multi-GPU software compatibility and assemble or maintain the system.
  • Decide by workload rather than headline specs if speed, context length or concurrent use is the priority. Benchmark the same model and settings on the particular configurations; neither an FP4 peak figure nor a sum of GPU memory answers that question by itself.

NVIDIA’s product information also identifies an OEM-only 64 GB option. Check the actual configuration and availability through the seller before comparing it with the 128 GB system; the 200-billion-parameter inference and 70-billion-parameter fine-tuning claims cited above are for the 128 GB model.
