Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor VHS conversion, match the VCR to the tape’s recording standard and the capture device to the signal the VCR actually outputs. The cassette can fit even when the video signal is incompatible. Convert standards only if the finished video needs a different standard.
NTSC and PAL VHS use different video signals
NTSC and PAL VHS cassettes are physically similar, but their recorded video signal structures differ. A tape may fit into a VCR yet fail to play correctly if the machine cannot handle its standard. The cassette shell alone does not establish compatibility.

| Property | NTSC | PAL | What it means for conversion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frames per second | 29.97 | 25 | Preserve the source timing during capture when possible; changing the frame rate is part of standards conversion. |
| Fields per second | 59.94 | 50 | Both standards are interlaced, so field handling affects motion. |
| Total lines | 525 | 625 | PAL has more total lines, but that alone does not guarantee better VHS image quality. |
| Digital reference raster | 720 × 480 | 720 × 576 | These are digital sampling rasters, not pixel dimensions stored on analog VHS tape. |
The figures are reported by Film-Retter; Sony independently describes NTSC as 525 interlaced lines at 29.97 frames per second in its NTSC overview.

Check compatibility at each stage
Playback, capture, and delivery are separate compatibility questions. A label such as “NTSC Playback on PAL TV” does not by itself establish that a capture device can accept the VCR’s output. It may indicate PAL60 output for television viewing, which is not necessarily the same as a standards-converted PAL 50 signal.

- Playback: Confirm that the VCR can read the tape’s recording standard and that the television accepts the VCR’s output.
- Capture: Confirm the capture device supports the VCR’s actual output signal, not just the tape’s label or the VCR’s broad regional playback claim.
- Delivery: Identify the required standard for the finished video. Convert only if the destination requires it.
The Canadian Conservation Institute says capture cards are usually specific to NTSC, PAL, or SECAM, although some can switch standards. Its Technical Bulletin 31 advises: “It is important to ensure you have the correct card or are using the correct standard for the type of VHS recording you plan to digitize.” See the Government of Canada VHS digitization bulletin.
Choose a workflow for your goal
If you only want to watch the tape
Use a VCR and television combination explicitly compatible with the tape and the signal it outputs. Do not assume that a cassette that fits, or a vague regional playback label, means the entire playback chain will work.

If you want to digitize the tape
- Identify the tape’s recording standard, such as NTSC or PAL.
- Choose a VCR that can read that standard.
- Check the VCR’s actual output mode and confirm the capture device accepts it. A VCR’s cross-standard playback feature does not guarantee a compatible capture signal.
- Capture with the source timing preserved where possible. Convert the captured video afterward if the intended destination requires another standard.
If you need a standards-converted copy
First establish reliable playback or capture of the source. Then convert to the destination standard. For example, PAL60 output from a VCR intended for viewing on a PAL television is not necessarily equivalent to PAL 50 output that a capture device can accept. Compatibility depends on the specific VCR and capture device; the published guidance does not establish support for particular current models.
When to consider a time-base corrector
The Canadian Conservation Institute’s illustrated digitization chain places a time-base corrector (TBC) between the VCR and capture card. This is an advanced workflow option shown in that setup, not evidence that every VHS tape requires a TBC. Consider the whole signal chain and the playback problem you are trying to address rather than treating one component as a universal fix.

Questions to ask before choosing equipment
- Can the VCR read the tape’s recording standard?
- What signal does the VCR output in the selected playback mode?
- Does the capture device accept that exact signal and standard?
- What standard does the finished file or playback destination require?
- Is an advanced component such as a TBC appropriate for the planned capture workflow?
When comparing proposed setups, verify those points against the specific device specifications. General descriptions such as “multi-system” or “NTSC playback on PAL TV” are not enough to confirm capture compatibility.
