An NTRIP client can connect to a caster without delivering usable corrections to the receiver, and receiving corrections does not guarantee that the receiver will reach an RTK fixed solution. Check three separate states: the caster connection, correction data reaching the receiver, and the receiver’s reported position solution.
What “connected” does—and does not—tell you
Start by identifying which program displays “connected”: an NTRIP client, GNSS utility, receiver interface, or another application. That label describes the status reported by that component; it is not, by itself, proof that the receiver has a fixed position.

Trimble’s status examples distinguish connection states, including “Up and Connected,” invalid mountpoints, invalid credentials, internet connection failure, and no caster data. In Trimble’s documentation, “Up and Connected” means connected to a correction source and receiving data. Other products may use different labels, so interpret the message using the documentation for the software or receiver showing it. Trimble’s port configuration documentation describes those examples.

- Caster link: Does the client establish a session with the caster?
- Correction input: Does the receiver report that correction data is arriving?
- Position solution: What solution state does the receiver report, such as float or fixed?
Check the caster session and requested stream
Confirm the provider’s host, port, username and password, and the exact mountpoint. A mountpoint identifies the stream requested from the caster; a successful login does not establish that the selected stream is valid or appropriate for the receiver. The BKG Ntrip Client (BNC) help describes stream selection by mountpoint.
Use the client or receiver’s specific status or error message to narrow the issue. A failed internet connection, rejected credentials, invalid mountpoint, and caster that supplies no data are distinct cases in Trimble’s examples. Do not treat those labels as universal wording or assume that one correction applies to every NTRIP client.

Verify the Windows-to-receiver path
If Windows receives corrections in a client and forwards them to a receiver over a serial connection, check the port and serial settings at both ends. BNC’s help describes selecting a Windows COM port and matching serial settings to the attached receiver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm that the client is using the COM port connected to the receiver.
- Compare baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bits, and flow control with the receiver’s configuration.
- Check the receiver’s own status to see whether correction data is arriving after the client reports a connection.
Do not assume a particular COM-port number or baud rate: the correct values depend on the equipment and its configuration. If the client reports a caster connection but the receiver reports no correction input, investigate this forwarding path before changing unrelated positioning settings.

If the mountpoint is VRS, check position reporting
First confirm with the correction-service documentation that the selected mountpoint uses VRS. For the VRS workflow described in BNC’s help, the caster needs valid NMEA-GGA position information. Check whether the receiver or client is sending that information and whether the caster accepts it.
BNC documents automatic GGA forwarding and a manual approximate-position option when a serial receiver cannot provide GGA. That workaround belongs to this documented VRS scenario; it is not a general setting to enable for every NTRIP stream. See the BNC help for its VRS and GGA behavior.

Inspect the receiver’s solution and antenna setup
Once the caster and delivery path have been checked, inspect the receiver’s correction-input status and its navigation solution label. A connected client or incoming correction stream is not equivalent to an RTK fixed solution. Receiver model, firmware, correction format, service, and operating conditions can affect diagnosis; consult the manual for the specific receiver for supported formats, configuration, and solution-state troubleshooting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Also check that the GNSS antenna is securely installed in a stable position with a good sky view and minimal obstructions. This is setup guidance, not a guarantee that the receiver will fix. Waveshare includes this advice in its Q43 Windows setup example, which demonstrates one Windows workflow using QGNSS and an NTRIP client; it is an example, not a universal receiver procedure.

Keep a short fault record before changing settings
Write down what each layer reports so you can tell whether a change affected the connection, correction delivery, or solution state. Change one setting at a time and record the result.
- Receiver model and firmware, plus the client software in use.
- Caster status or error, host and port, and selected mountpoint.
- Whether the receiver reports correction data arriving and what solution label it reports.
- For serial forwarding, the selected COM port and the receiver’s matching serial settings.
- For a VRS mountpoint, whether valid GGA position information is being sent and accepted.
- Antenna position and nearby obstructions.
There is no source-supported universal waiting time, baseline limit, or complete model-independent cause list for a float or no-fix state. Use the receiver and correction-service documentation for device- and service-specific diagnosis rather than relying on a generic distance or timing rule.
