NPR StateImpact’s published policy describes newsroom moderation and reporter participation for that project; Reddit combines sitewide rules with rules set by each subreddit. Neither description establishes that every NPR story has comments or that every Reddit community is a good fit.
How the two discussion spaces differ
| Factor | NPR StateImpact comments | |
|---|---|---|
| What discussion is attached to | Comments are tied to a StateImpact news report or project page. | Discussion is organized into user-run communities, which may focus on a subject and need not center on one news report. |
| Who sets and enforces rules | StateImpact’s published policy describes moderation by site managers and reporters. | Reddit-wide rules apply, and each subreddit may add and enforce its own rules. |
| What to check before joining | Whether that particular article offers comments, and the rules linked there. | The specific subreddit’s rules and the tone of its recent discussions. |
Are NPR comments moderated?
StateImpact’s community guidelines say site managers and reporters moderate comments. The policy encourages reporters to participate by directing conversations, responding to flare-ups and keeping discussions moving. It says comments on the substance of the material or news—including critical observations—will be left up so readers and the author can respond openly.

The same policy says comments may be removed for personal attacks, personal information, spam and unsubstantiated claims. This is a policy for NPR StateImpact, not evidence that all NPR.org stories currently allow comments or use the same moderation approach. Check the page itself for a comment area and its linked guidelines. Reddit has platform-wide rules, but they are only a starting point: individual subreddits can set additional rules and have their own moderators. A respectful experience in one community does not establish what another will be like. Before posting, read the subreddit’s rules and look through recent threads to see how disagreement is handled. Reddit age limits and teen-safety tools
Reddit’s stated minimum account age is 13, unless local rules set a higher minimum. Its guidance describes protective defaults for accounts belonging to teens aged 13–18. Those defaults and tools can help with privacy and unwanted contact, including blocking and reporting, but they are not adult supervision or a guarantee that every interaction will be safe. Check the current requirements and account settings that apply where you live. Reddit’s age requirement; Reddit’s teen-safety guidance.
Reddit advises teens to leave a community that feels hostile, especially if someone asks them to move the conversation to an unmoderated third-party app. Use block and report tools when needed, and do not share identifying or personal information in a discussion.

Which should a young reader choose?
- Choose a publisher’s comment area when you want to respond to a particular report and the page offers comments under a clear policy. For StateImpact, the published policy describes staff moderation and encourages reporter participation.
- Consider Reddit when you want topic-specific peer discussion and have found a subreddit whose rules and recent conversations seem constructive—and you meet the applicable age requirement.
- Pause or leave when the rules are unclear, discussion turns hostile, or someone pushes you toward private contact or an unmoderated app.
A 2025 NPR report relayed a Speaking with American Men (SAM) project finding that six in ten young men use Reddit weekly. That figure is about young men in that project; it is not a measure of all teens or young readers, nor does it say anything about the quality of news discussion. NPR’s report on the SAM project.
