Fix AI-generated UI mockups from the inside out: replace placeholder copy, correct each text layer’s sizing and wrapping, adjust spacing in the parent layout, then review the screen with realistic text and dimensions. This prevents a common mistake—shrinking type or nudging elements before finding the underlying layout rule. Figma is a useful documented example, but controls vary across design tools.
Start with editable layers, not a flattened screenshot
If the mockup is a screenshot, individual text boxes, spacing rules, and components cannot be repaired directly. Recreate or import it as editable objects in your design tool, or use the screenshot as a reference while rebuilding the affected area. With structured layers, you can identify whether a problem comes from the text box, its parent frame, or the design system.

Fix text overflow and awkward wrapping
Replace placeholder copy first
Use the wording likely to ship, or realistic copy of similar length. Short filler labels can conceal text that will wrap, clip, or collide when the actual wording is added.

Check the text box’s resizing behavior
In Figma, a text layer created with a single click defaults to Auto width and expands horizontally. A layer created by click-drag defaults to Fixed size and retains its dimensions as the text changes. Fixed size can be appropriate when you want a constrained width and wrapping, but a box that is too short or configured poorly can clip text or cause overlap. In the Layout section, inspect the resizing behavior and then check the box dimensions and wrapping. See Figma’s text resizing guidance.

For text that belongs in a card or column, keep its width constraint intentional and let its height accommodate the wrapped copy. For a one-line label, first check its available width and neighboring elements. Change font size in Typography when the type hierarchy itself needs adjustment; Figma warns that the scale tool changes both the font size and bounds and may create fractional sizes or subpixel positions.
Correct spacing and alignment in the parent layout
Select the parent frame and inspect its Auto Layout direction, padding, gap, alignment, and resizing behavior. In Figma, Auto Layout arranges children using these properties and adapts as content changes. Padding is the space between the parent edge and its children; gap is the space between children. For consistent cards or toolbars, use a shared spacing value rather than nudging each child independently. Nest Auto Layout frames when a group needs its own direction and internal spacing. Fixed-size text layers may not resize to accommodate changed text, and Figma notes they can overlap other layers in an Auto Layout frame. If a decorative or overlay object should sit outside the normal flow, Figma’s “Ignore auto layout” option excludes it from that flow. Constraints can then govern its position relative to the parent; ordinary constraints are not available on children in an Auto Layout frame unless they ignore the flow.

Use the design system to make repairs consistent
If the project has a team library, use its actual components, typography, and spacing conventions instead of inventing local substitutes. Reusable components encode decisions such as spacing and typography, giving an AI design agent concrete patterns to reuse. Figma’s design-system guidance also notes that documentation intended for people may not communicate the system to an agent as effectively as real components and properties.

Ask an AI refinement tool for a bounded change
If you use an AI agent to polish the mockup, select only the affected frame or layers. Specify the problem and the details that must remain unchanged. For example: “Set the card’s internal vertical gap to the existing spacing token, let the description wrap within the card width, and preserve the heading style, button order, and colors.” Then inspect the changes on the canvas. Figma says edits made through its agent remain editable; its AI UI Refiner page advises users to state what to refine and what to leave alone.
Figma’s AI tools include tasks such as replacing placeholder or duplicate text, rewriting or shortening copy, and turning designs into prototypes. But the Help Center warns that “AI outputs may be misleading or wrong,” so check both the words and their visual result. Availability and eligibility can change: Figma’s AI tools help page says some standalone AI tools require a paid plan and Full seat, while agent edits require a Full seat and file edit access.

Test the mockup with realistic content and conditions
- Use the intended frame dimensions. Check the design at the viewport or frame size it is meant to support.
- Test realistic text lengths. Include longer headings, labels, button text, and body copy where they are plausible.
- Resize and inspect. Look for clipping, unwanted wrapping, overlap, and elements that no longer align after content changes.
- Check the implementation when available. Figma notes that browser and operating-system text rendering can differ from its own, so small visual differences may appear outside the design canvas. Its text properties guidance covers these rendering considerations.
- Check text-spacing robustness. Under WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12, increasing text spacing should not cause content loss or loss of functionality. Use this as an accessibility robustness check, not as a formula for visual taste.
Choose a repair path based on what is editable
