What does npm provenance verify?
npm defines two attestation types. A provenance attestation publicly links a package to its source and build instructions from the build environment. A publish attestation is generated by the registry when an authorized user publishes the package. Together, the available context can include the build environment, run, source commit, workflow file, and a public ledger entry. npm: Generating provenance statements

Inspect those details as evidence about origin and process, not as a security seal. A trustworthy source can contain a vulnerability, and a documented build can still produce risky code. npm documents GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD as supported provenance publishing providers and says trusted publishing automatically generates attestations. The list of supported providers may change, so consult the current documentation rather than assuming it is exhaustive.

To inspect package evidence, open the package’s npm registry page and look for its provenance panel. Depending on the package, it can show the build environment, source commit, workflow, and ledger entry. Not every package has provenance evidence.

What does package-lock.json establish?
The lockfile records the dependency tree npm generated so later installs can reproduce that resolution. Package entries can include a resolved source and an integrity value. The lockfile helps answer which dependency versions and locations an installation is expected to use; it is not an independent statement that those packages are trustworthy.
Its relationship to package.json matters. With npm install, npm uses lockfile versions when they satisfy the manifest’s version ranges, but can update the lockfile when they do not. In CI, use npm ci when the committed manifest and lockfile must stay in sync and installation must not modify them. npm: npm install

Lockfile format depends on npm generation: npm documents lockfileVersion 1 for npm 5 and 6, version 2 for npm 7 and 8, and version 3 for npm 9 and later. npm 7 significantly changed the format to capture more dependency-tree information. This is useful context when inspecting older repositories; the version number describes the lockfile format, not a security rating. npm: package-lock.json

What does the integrity field mean?
An integrity value is a Standard Subresource Integrity (SRI) digest, documented by npm as using SHA-512 or SHA-1 for the unpacked artifact. Its practical purpose is comparison: npm can check whether the artifact bytes match the digest recorded in the lockfile. Exact availability can vary by source and package entry. npm: package-lock.json

A match says the bytes correspond to the expected digest—not who created them, how they were built, or whether they are safe. The expected digest’s trust anchor matters: if an attacker can replace both the artifact and the value you rely on, matching them does not establish independent trust. A mismatch means the bytes differ from the recorded expectation and should be investigated.
How do you check npm signatures and provenance?
- Review the dependency change. Inspect the package name and version, resolved location, source, and integrity entry in the proposed lockfile change. Keep the lockfile under source control so dependency selection can be reviewed and reproduced.
- Install consistently in CI. Use
npm ciwhen CI should install from a committed manifest and lockfile without editing either file. - Run signature checks where supported. Use
npm audit signatureswith npm CLI 9.5.0 or later for the documented verification flow. The command checks supported registry signatures and provenance attestations. npm: Viewing package provenance - Inspect provenance context. On the registry package page, examine the available build environment, source commit, workflow, and ledger entry rather than treating the panel’s presence as a safety verdict.
- Investigate failures. A checksum mismatch or missing or invalid signature/attestation is a signal to pause and check the package and its publication evidence. Do not treat a digest match as a substitute for provenance review.
npm’s audit-signature and provenance features are evolving, and verification depends on supported registry evidence. Check current npm CLI documentation when applying this flow. npm: npm audit

How the evidence layers fit together
- Dependency selection: the lockfile records the version and source npm expects to install.
- Artifact identity: the integrity value checks whether the bytes match the recorded digest.
- Origin and publication context: provenance and registry signatures provide evidence about source, build, and authorized publication.
These checks are complementary, not interchangeable. A lockfile can pin a compromised package; a checksum can faithfully match compromised bytes; provenance can accurately describe a build of vulnerable source. Review the proposed dependency change, the byte-level integrity evidence, and the available origin and publication context according to the claim each can support.
