Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Notifications are short updates shown by an app or service, often while the app is not open. One useful technical distinction is local notifications, created on your device, versus remote or push notifications, sent from a server through a platform delivery service. “Email” is different: it describes content and a service, while push describes how an alert is delivered.
What are notifications?
A notification is a brief, user-facing update that can bring useful information to your attention while an app is inactive. Depending on the platform and your settings, it may appear as a banner, a lock-screen item, a badge, a sound, or an entry in Notification Center. Apple’s User Notifications documentation describes these forms and the systems that deliver them.
It helps to separate three ideas: where an alert originates, what information it carries, and how it appears on screen. Local versus remote describes origin and delivery; email versus a score update describes content; a banner or badge describes presentation.
What is the difference between local and push notifications?
| Aspect | Local notification | Remote or push notification |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is created | By an app on the user’s device | By the app publisher’s server |
| What triggers it | An app-defined condition, such as a scheduled time or location | A server-side event or decision |
| How it reaches the user | The device’s notification system handles the locally created alert | A platform push service delivers it to the device; Apple devices use APNs |
| Example | A scheduled reminder (illustrative) | A timely sports score update, an example described by Apple |
These categories explain different delivery paths, not a universal speed or reliability ranking. Performance depends on circumstances, and the cited documentation does not establish that one type is always faster or more dependable. See Apple’s documentation on local and remote notifications.

Is email a type of notification?
Email and push are not mutually exclusive categories. Email is a communication service and a kind of content; push is a delivery mechanism. An email service can send a push alert to your phone when a new message arrives, while the message itself remains email. Gmail also provides notification settings for its mobile apps and supported desktop browsers; Google’s Gmail notification guide covers those options.
Likewise, a notification’s appearance does not tell you whether it originated locally or remotely. A banner could display either kind. The app, device, and your choices determine which notifications are allowed and how they are presented.
How can you control notifications?
On iPhone and iPad
Apps need your consent before sending notifications, and Apple says people can customize notification styles and delivery times. The exact controls and labels may depend on the operating-system version. Use the device’s Settings app to review notification permissions and presentation for each app. Apple’s Notifications design guidance describes user consent and customization.

On Android
Android 13 and later require apps to request the POST_NOTIFICATIONS runtime permission. On some devices, you can also choose whether an app’s alerts are alerting or silent and manage notification types by app; menu names and available controls vary by device. Consult Google’s Android notification controls for device-level options and Android’s notification permission documentation for the permission requirement.
For Gmail
Gmail has account-specific notification options in its Android and iOS apps. On a computer, desktop notifications are available in supported browsers when you are signed in to Gmail and have Gmail open. Why might email notifications not arrive?
Check the settings at each level: the device’s permission for the app, the app’s own notification preferences, and—if you use Gmail—the notification settings for the relevant account. On desktop, also confirm that you are signed in to Gmail in a supported browser and that Gmail is open. A setting at one level cannot necessarily override a restriction at another, so review the controls that apply to your device and account.
What makes a notification useful and privacy-conscious?
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines say, “A notification gives people timely, high-value information they can understand at a glance.” Its guidance recommends concise, informative alerts, avoiding duplicate notices for the same event, and keeping sensitive or confidential details out of notifications because someone else may see the device. When it makes sense, an alert can also offer an action for a simple task that does not require opening the app. Read Apple’s guidance on notification design.

How does web push work?
Web push is a remote notification path for web apps and browser experiences. In Apple’s documented workflow, a site asks permission, creates a push subscription, uses a service worker to receive messages, and uses the Notifications API to display them. Apple’s documentation specifies support for Home Screen web apps on iOS 16.4 or later and Safari webpages on macOS 13 or later; these are version-specific platform details, not a guarantee for every browser or device. See Apple’s web push documentation.
