Nothing Phone (3a) vs Phone (4a) Pro: What Changes and What to Pay

The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro lists a newer processor, a faster-refresh display and more ambitious zoom hardware than the standard Phone (3a). But the available prices come from different markets and configurations, so they do not establish a reliable price difference—and specifications alone cannot show which phone performs better in daily use.

What is the difference between the Phone (3a) and Phone (4a) Pro?

Display: 144 Hz versus 120 Hz

Nothing lists 120 Hz adaptive refresh for the Phone (3a) and 144 Hz adaptive refresh for the 4a Pro. The Pro therefore has the higher stated refresh rate. That number by itself does not establish how noticeable the difference will be in everyday use, or how the phones compare in brightness, color, or sustained performance.

Processor: two different Snapdragon platforms

The standard 3a uses the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3; the 4a Pro uses the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. The 4a Pro has the newer-named platform in Nothing’s specifications, but no comparable independent benchmark is established here. Do not treat the model names alone as a measured performance result.

Cameras: zoom figures need context

Nothing’s regional comparison page lists a 50 MP OIS main camera for the Phone (3a). For the 4a Pro, Nothing advertises a 50 MP OIS Sony main camera and up to 140x ultra zoom, while separately describing the periscope system as offering 3.5x optical zoom. The 140x figure is a manufacturer-stated zoom headline, not evidence of optical detail at that magnification. These specifications do not establish which phone takes better photos or video.

Battery and charging: capacity varies by market

Nothing lists a 5,000 mAh battery and 50 W charging for the Phone (3a). Its 4a Pro page gives 5,080 mAh for the US configuration and 5,400 mAh for India only, with 50 W charging. Capacity alone cannot establish longer battery life; no matched endurance comparison is available here.

Durability: only the 4a Pro rating is established here

Nothing states an IP65 rating for the Phone (4a) Pro and says it was tested under 25 cm of water for up to 20 minutes. The cited official Phone (3a) material does not establish a comparable rating, so the evidence here does not support a direct resistance comparison. An IP rating is not a claim that a phone is waterproof.

What is the price difference?

A definitive price difference cannot be calculated from the available figures: the Phone (3a) evidence is a €329 starting price on a European page, while the 4a Pro examples are a US 8+128GB storefront display of $419 (with $499 shown as a comparison price) and a UK listing of £519. They are not same-country, same-date, same-capacity quotes. The €329 figure may also no longer reflect the current offer.

For a useful comparison, check both phones on the same country’s official store or retailer at the same time, matching storage capacity and accounting for taxes, promotions, and availability. Do not subtract euro, dollar, or pound figures across markets, or treat a struck-through comparison price as the amount every buyer pays.

Which is better for you?

  • Consider the Phone (4a) Pro if its listed 144 Hz display, Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, periscope camera system, or stated IP65 rating matter to you—and the exact local price fits your budget.
  • Consider the Phone (3a) if its listed 120 Hz display and Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 meet your needs and you find it at a preferable price in your market.
  • Wait for direct testing if your decision depends on gaming performance, camera quality, battery endurance, or real-world durability. Manufacturer specifications do not answer those questions, and no independent head-to-head results are established here.

Nothing also says the Phone (4a) Pro has its lowest-ever carbon footprint for a Nothing smartphone, at 50.5 kg CO₂e, and that 46 components containing recycled materials account for 16.6% of its total weight. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independently verified findings. Nothing product page
