Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Microsoft Notepad struggles with a large text file, EmEditor is one documented alternative to consider. EmEditor says its 64-bit version can open files up to 16 TB in full when sufficient memory is available, and its Large File Controller can open a selected section of a file. That is a vendor-stated capability, not proof that files open “instantly” or a guarantee that every file will work on every PC.
Why a large text file can overwhelm an editor
There is no universal file-size threshold for “large.” What an editor can open or edit depends on its design, configuration, the file’s structure, available memory and storage, and which features are enabled. A file may open but still be difficult to search, scroll through, or edit.

It is also important to distinguish Microsoft Notepad from Notepad++. The Notepad++ manual discusses configurable restrictions and ways to reduce feature overhead for large files, including turning off syntax highlighting and adjusting word wrap. Those instructions concern Notepad++, not Microsoft Notepad, and do not establish a size limit for either application. See the Notepad++ manual.

Full-file opening
EmEditor’s official large-file page says its 64-bit version can open files up to 16 TB in full when sufficient memory is available. This is the vendor’s stated ceiling, not an independent test result or a promise that a file of that size will be practical to work with on a particular computer. The documentation also notes that behavior can depend on settings and file characteristics. See EmEditor’s Large File Support documentation.

- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
Opening a section instead
For files beyond the full-opening limits or when you only need to inspect part of a file, EmEditor’s Large File Controller lets you choose a section to open. Its help documentation describes using the controller to select a portion and check file size and temporary-disk availability: EmEditor Help: Large File Controller.
Trade-offs to check
EmEditor’s large-file workflow may use temporary disk space. Its documentation also notes that some features, such as highlighting or word wrapping, may be disabled above configured thresholds. Before opening a very large file, check available disk space and the editor’s current settings; consider whether you need the entire file or only a portion.

How the documented options differ
The table compares only approaches described in the linked product documentation. It does not rank speed: the available sources do not provide a comparable benchmark using the same files and hardware.

How to choose an editor for your file
- Check the file size and your task. Decide whether you need to read the whole file, search it, make edits, or inspect only a section.
- Check how the editor handles the file. Look for full-file loading versus section-based or disk-based access, and for any documented size or line limits.
- Check your computer and settings. Confirm available memory and temporary disk space, and whether large-file mode changes features such as highlighting or wrapping.
- Try the workflow on a copy when edits matter. For a very large or important file, confirm that the editor opens the needed content and that your search or edit works as expected before relying on it.
“Lightweight” alone is not a useful measure for this decision. An editor that opens only a selected section may suit inspection, while full-file access may matter for a task that needs to search or edit across the whole file. The right choice depends on the file and the work you need to do.

What “instantly” does—and does not—mean here
The cited product pages explain features and file-handling approaches, but they do not provide an independent, comparable timing test with a specified file, computer, and method. So “handles them instantly” should not be treated as a verified speed guarantee. Opening a selected section is also different from loading and processing the entire file.
