NotebookLM can turn your own course materials into study aids such as quizzes, flashcards and study guides, and link answers back to source passages. But the claim that it outperforms study apps costing $15 a month is not established: the claim names no apps or tests, and Google’s product descriptions are not independent comparisons.
What NotebookLM can do for studying
Google describes a source-based workflow: add materials to a notebook, then use its study tools to work with that content. The education feature page lists quizzes and flashcards based exclusively on uploaded sources, study guides with key terms and sample quiz or essay questions, and chat responses with inline citations that link to passages in those sources. Google for Education’s feature overview also lists Guided Learning, Audio Overviews and Video Overviews.

Maps and source exploration
Google says Mind Maps show relationships among a notebook’s sources and notes. Learners can zoom in and open concepts for summaries. The company also describes finding web sources and improved understanding of images and graphs in PDFs. These are product capabilities, not evidence that users achieve better learning outcomes. Google’s feature announcement describes the map, source-discovery and PDF features.

On September 15, 2026, Google announced real-time spoken conversations grounded in notebook sources, a mobile audio recorder for lectures and thoughts, interactive learning overviews combining summaries and study outputs, additional quiz formats, and short video overviews in more than 80 languages. The announcement described some capabilities as rolling out in the near future or in stages, so availability may vary by user and timing. Google’s September update gives the rollout context.

What “free” means—and who can use it
Google says consumer Google Account holders can use Gemini Notebook, while its education page describes a free tier for qualifying institutions with specified limits. Those education limits should not be assumed to apply identically to every personal account or to mean every feature is available to everyone at no cost.
For the qualifying free education tier, Google lists up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook and 50 daily chat queries. It also lists up to 10 quizzes and 10 flashcards per user per day. These are plan limits stated on Google for Education’s page, not universal guarantees for all account types.

Does it outperform paid study apps?
The available evidence does not establish that. The headline’s $15 comparison does not identify a competing app, region, billing term, task or performance measure. Google’s materials describe its own product; they are not independent head-to-head tests, and no attributable learning-outcome or comparative-performance statistic is provided.

Whether it is better than a particular paid app depends on how well each handles the same materials and the learner’s preferred study process. To make a fair comparison, test named apps on the same sources and tasks, including citation quality, quiz and flashcard quality and editability, review workflows, device and account availability, usage limits, and total cost for the relevant region and billing arrangement.

What the $15 figure actually refers to
Google lists its own Google AI Pro for Education add-on at $15 per user per month with a one-year commitment, or $24 per user per month when billed monthly. That is education add-on pricing shown by Google, not a verified price for a competing consumer study app—and it is not the same as the qualifying free education tier. Google’s education pricing page gives these terms.
Separately, Google’s September 15, 2026 announcement described a promotion under which eligible U.S. college students could receive one year of Google AI Pro at no charge, stated as a value of $19.99 per month. The offer requires a valid payment method, can be redeemed until December 31, 2026, and automatically charges $19.99 per month after the offer unless cancelled, according to Google. Eligibility and offer terms should be checked on the announcement before signing up; this promotion is distinct from the education-tier limits and pricing above.
