What is Silver Pines about?
You play private investigator Red Walker, who arrives in the half-abandoned town of Silver Pines to find missing musician Eddie Velvet. The search uncovers the town’s dark past and draws Walker into increasingly nightmarish circumstances, according to the official game description.

The town is the main exploration space, rather than a backdrop for a straightforward sequence of levels. Abandoned shops, apartment buildings and sewer networks contain clues and puzzles that open routes deeper into the case, as The Guardian’s review describes.

It is designed as both. The Steam listing calls it a survival-horror Metroidvania: you search for supplies, solve puzzles, fight or evade enemies, and use tools and weapons to reach places you could not access earlier. That gated, return-to-old-areas structure is the Metroidvania side; limited resources and dangerous encounters supply the survival-horror pressure.

The two halves affect one another. New tools can turn previously blocked routes into options, but space in your inventory is limited, so deciding what to carry matters alongside deciding where to explore. GamesRadar+ describes a crowbar that can pull down wooden panels and double as a melee weapon, but takes more inventory space than a box cutter. Its review also notes item combination, storage boxes and weapon upgrades that reduce weapons’ inventory footprint. These are the reviewer’s observations, not an independently verified mechanical audit.
The game also gives exploration an investigative layer. The Guardian describes progression through clues, puzzles and locked rooms, while GamesRadar+ notes a camera feature for recording points of interest. The resulting rhythm appears to be less about clearing a map in one pass than learning it, finding a new way forward, and returning with a better tool or a fresh lead.

How does the horror and combat work?
Scarcity is central to the premise of play, not just atmosphere. The Guardian reports breakable knives, pistols that must be reloaded carefully, and limited ammunition. That makes each confrontation a resource decision: spend supplies to fight, or try to avoid the danger and preserve them for later.

As a comparison, Silent Hill and Resident Evil are useful shorthand for moody horror, danger and resource management—not evidence that Silver Pines belongs to either series. Its more specific identity is a detective mystery threaded through gated exploration and backtracking.
What do reviewers like, and what gives them pause?
GamesRadar+ highlights painterly visuals, music, atmosphere, pacing and the investigative mystery. The Guardian’s assessment also emphasizes style, pacing and mythology, while noting that the game uses familiar adventure conventions. Together, those responses suggest that its strongest appeal is the mood and the question of what happened in Silver Pines, rather than a claim of unprecedented mechanics.

Is Silver Pines worth your attention?
If you enjoy horror games where exploration, clues and careful resource use are as important as combat, Silver Pines has a clear appeal. Its missing-musician case gives the backtracking a narrative purpose, while limited inventory and ammunition add pressure to what you take and when you choose to fight. The main reservation in the available reviews is boss-fight quality; there is not yet a post-launch basis for judging how well the whole experience holds together.
