NotebookLM is rolling out two changes that affect how you use the service day-to-day: chat history and a new AI Ultra tier. If you’ve ever lost context after closing a tab, chat history is the headline improvement. If you’ve run into slow or weaker answers on harder tasks, AI Ultra is the headline upgrade.
Because rollouts usually happen gradually, the first practical challenge is verifying what you actually have. This guide walks through how to check access, how to use chat history correctly, and how to switch to AI Ultra without guessing.

What’s Changing in NotebookLM
Two separate updates are landing. First, NotebookLM adds chat history so conversations remain available for later review. Second, NotebookLM introduces an AI Ultra tier, which is designed for higher-end performance and more demanding tasks.
In practice, these changes improve continuity. You spend less time “rebuilding” context from scratch and more time iterating on the same line of work—especially when you’re working across long notebooks.

What Chat History Means (and What It Doesn’t)
Chat history is about persistence. It typically keeps a record of your NotebookLM chat turns so you can return to a prior conversation and continue from where you left off.
How chat history typically behaves
- Continuity: Prior chats should appear in your history list or conversation sidebar.
- Retrieval: You can usually select an older chat to view its messages.
- Restart vs. continue: Some apps let you append new turns to an old thread; others only let you read. Expect the UI to indicate whether you can keep chatting in the same thread.
Common misconceptions
- Chat history is not the same as notebook indexing: History preserves conversation records; notebook indexing affects how NotebookLM reads your documents.
- History isn’t guaranteed to be permanent: Retention policies can vary. If you manage data tightly, treat history as potentially removable.
- History can’t always reconstruct deleted notebook context: If a notebook is removed, answers tied to it may not be reproducible exactly as before.
Access and Eligibility: How to Tell If You Have the New Features
Rollouts typically go out in waves. That means some accounts see chat history and the AI Ultra option immediately, while others get them later. The key is checking both the interface and your plan.
Check your account tier
Open NotebookLM and look for your subscription or plan area in settings. You should see your current tier name and—if available—the option to upgrade to AI Ultra.
Verify feature availability in the UI
For chat history, look for one or more of these UI elements:
- A History or Conversations panel
- A list of prior chat threads in a sidebar
- A “recent chats” section on the home screen
If you only see a single blank chat screen with no conversation list, you may not yet have the rollout.
Enable and Use NotebookLM Chat History
How you enable chat history depends on what NotebookLM exposes in your UI. In many products, chat history is either on by default for the new rollout, or it’s controlled by a single settings toggle.
Start a chat with history tracking
- Sign in to NotebookLM.
- Create or open a notebook you want to work from.
- Start a new chat thread (usually a “New chat” button).
- After you send a message, verify the conversation appears in your history list.
If the conversation doesn’t appear after refresh, try a full page reload and check whether you’re signed into the same account you used earlier.

- ELEVATED EFFICIENCY - Experience the MediaTek Helio G85 processor and 60Hz refresh rate that ensure fluid browsing, responsive gaming, and lag-free streaming.
Search and revisit prior chats
Once chat history exists, the fastest workflow is to treat it like a log of decisions:
- Open the History / Conversations panel.
- Use any built-in search field (if present) to locate a prior thread by keyword.
- Select the conversation to view the earlier messages and outputs.
- If the UI allows it, continue the thread by sending a new message in the same chat.
Manage sessions and avoid accidental mixes
Chat history is helpful, but it can also create clutter if you frequently run “near-duplicate” prompts. The safest method is to keep each chat focused on a single intent (e.g., “Draft section 2,” “Extract risks,” “Summarize Chapter 4”).
- Name your workflow in the first prompt: “For the project roadmap, summarize X.”
- Use notebook-scoped prompts: Ask for outputs tied to a specific notebook or document section.
- Don’t reuse stale context: If you’re switching projects, start a new chat instead of continuing an old one.
What the AI Ultra Tier Adds
AI Ultra is designed for higher-end interactions. While exact specs can vary by rollout and model configuration, the intent is consistent: better quality on complex prompts, stronger performance on longer or more ambiguous tasks, and improved reliability for “hard” work.
Think of it as the tier you pick when ordinary outputs aren’t enough or when you need fewer retries.
Recommended Free Tools
Performance and behavior expectations
- Higher output quality: Better reasoning and fewer obviously wrong details on multi-step tasks.
- More stable instruction-following: When you give constraints (format, tone, audience), Ultra typically adheres more closely.
- Better long-context handling: If you’re working through many sections of a notebook, you may see fewer “lost thread” issues.
Cost and billing basics (what to look for)
When you upgrade, check the plan details near the upgrade button. You’re looking for:
- Whether billing is monthly or yearly
- Whether usage is capped or usage-based
- Whether there are “rate limits” or message caps
If you don’t see those details in the upgrade page, open the subscription or billing section in settings. If the UI doesn’t clarify, use support documentation or the billing page fine print.
When AI Ultra is worth it
- Complex writing: Reports, proposals, and structured drafts with constraints.
- Deep extraction: Building inventories of requirements, risks, or claims from dense documents.
- Iterative analysis: When you’ll ask follow-ups that depend on prior outputs.
- Time-sensitive work: When retries cost more than the tier upgrade.
Choosing Between Tiers: A Practical Comparison
You don’t need Ultra for every task. If your questions are straightforward and you’re iterating quickly, the baseline tier may be efficient enough. Ultra becomes most valuable when you care about correctness and consistency more than marginal cost.

| Pro | Regular work and structured drafts | More consistent formatting and better follow-through | May still stumble on very dense docs |
| AI Ultra | Hard problems and precision work | Fewer errors, better constraint adherence, stronger multi-step performance | Higher cost; don’t overuse it for simple tasks |
Step-by-Step: Switching to AI Ultra
If your account has AI Ultra available, upgrading should be a quick settings action. The main goal is to confirm the tier switch actually took effect for new chats.
On the web app
- Open NotebookLM in your browser.
- Go to Settings or Account (often under your profile icon).
- Find Subscription or Plan.
- Select AI Ultra.
- Complete the upgrade flow and confirm payment.
- Refresh NotebookLM.
After you switch: confirm it’s active
- Start a new chat thread.
- Look for a visible model/tier indicator in the chat header or composer (if NotebookLM shows it).
- Send a short test prompt with constraints (e.g., “Return a 7-bullet plan, each bullet starts with a verb, no fluff”).
- If the UI doesn’t show tier indicators, compare output quality to your previous baseline and check settings again.
Privacy, Retention, and Security Considerations
Chat history is a convenience feature, but it changes what’s stored and for how long. Before you rely on history for sensitive work, review NotebookLM’s retention and privacy documentation in your account settings.
Notebook content vs. chat content
Your notebooks and your chat messages can have different handling rules. A notebook might be uploaded and indexed; chat history might preserve your dialogue. If you share notebooks with collaborators, the notebook’s access rules still matter even when chat history is private (or vice versa).
Shared notebooks and collaborators
- If a notebook is shared, others may be able to view notebook-derived outputs.
- Chat history visibility can be account-specific, but you should verify how NotebookLM handles shared contexts.
When in doubt, treat notebook access as the upper bound: if others can access the notebook, assume they may see some derivative content.
Export and deletion expectations
Some chat systems let you export conversations or delete a thread. Check for buttons like Download, Export, or a Delete chat option in the conversation menu. If there’s no deletion UI, rely on the account-level privacy controls documented by NotebookLM.

Feature rollouts can be messy: a toggle might be missing, a cached session might hide UI elements, or your account may not be enrolled yet. Here are the most common failures and fixes.
Chat history not showing
- Confirm you’re signed into the correct account (double-check email).
- Refresh the page and hard reload your browser tab.
- Clear site data for NotebookLM (cookies + local storage) and retry.
- Try an incognito/private window to rule out extensions.
- Switch browsers (Chrome, Firefox, or Edge) and check again.
If chat history still doesn’t appear, you likely haven’t been included in the rollout wave yet.

Chat history shows the wrong conversation
This usually happens when you accidentally continue the wrong thread or when multiple tabs are open with different notebooks.
- Close extra tabs and work from a single chat thread.
- Create a new chat explicitly and confirm which notebook is selected.
- If the UI shows chat-to-notebook association, verify it before you ask follow-ups.
AI Ultra option missing
- Check Settings > Subscription / Plan for tier availability.
- Confirm your billing information is valid (some upgrades are blocked by payment issues).
- Wait for rollout waves—Ultra may not be available to every region or account.
- Try logout/login to refresh entitlements.
AI Ultra responses feel inconsistent
If Ultra doesn’t behave the way you expected, it’s usually prompt-related rather than tier-related.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Add explicit formatting constraints (headings, bullet counts, tone).
- Reference specific notebook sections by name when possible.
- Use “include only what’s supported by the notebook” when you need accuracy over guessing.
- Keep follow-ups consistent with the original thread’s goal.
Browser/session problems
UI features like chat history lists can fail silently when cookies or third-party storage are blocked.
- Disable aggressive tracking protection for the NotebookLM domain.
- Allow third-party cookies if your browser is blocking them (some setups require it).
- Check that JavaScript isn’t blocked for the site.
Workflow Tips: Get More Value from Chat History + AI Ultra
Once chat history is available, your best results come from treating conversations like durable working sessions instead of disposable chats.
Use a stable notebook structure
Don’t change notebook organization every session. If you keep your documents in consistent folders or sections, NotebookLM’s outputs stay more predictable—even when you return days later from chat history.
Keep prompts “chat-native”
- In the first message, state the objective and output format.
- Ask for a “draft” before asking for “final.”
- When you want consistency, ask for a style rule (e.g., “Use short sentences; no more than 18 words per sentence.”).
Use Ultra for long, high-ambiguity tasks
AI Ultra tends to pay off when the source is dense or the task is multi-step. For quick summaries or simple Q&A, you can often stick to your baseline tier and save Ultra for the hard steps.

If you only need document chat
Many systems can answer questions from uploaded docs. The differentiator with NotebookLM is how it’s framed around notebook content and chat continuity—so compare the user experience for long sessions and how history is stored.
If you need exportable logs
Some tools are stronger at exporting conversation transcripts and reusing them in other workflows. If exportability is mandatory, check NotebookLM’s download/export options and retention guarantees before you commit to it for compliance-heavy projects.
FAQs
Will chat history automatically be enabled for my account?
For most rollouts, it’s either on by default for eligible accounts or controlled by a settings toggle. If you don’t see a chat history panel or prior conversations, your account may simply not be in the rollout wave yet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I continue an older chat thread or only read it?
That depends on NotebookLM’s current UI behavior. Look for an input box tied to an existing conversation thread. If the UI only shows history without a “continue” path, you’ll need to start a new chat and restate the objective.
Does AI Ultra change my notebook indexing or only model behavior?
In most systems, tier changes affect the model’s response behavior rather than notebook indexing rules. Still, verify via UI indicators and by testing with the same prompt on the same notebook.
Is chat history private?
Chat history visibility typically depends on account access and the app’s privacy controls. Review your NotebookLM privacy and retention settings, especially if your notebooks are shared with collaborators.
What should I do if Ultra isn’t available but I want it?
Check Settings > Subscription for upgrade availability, ensure billing is valid, and try logging out and back in. If the option remains missing, it may be waiting on rollout or account eligibility.

Bottom Line
NotebookLM’s chat history upgrade is about keeping your thinking intact: you can revisit and iterate without starting over every time you close a tab. The AI Ultra tier is about raising the quality ceiling for complex tasks—use it when correctness, structure, and consistency matter most.
If you treat chat history as a durable working log and choose Ultra strategically for the hardest steps, you’ll usually get faster overall progress, not just better individual answers.
