The behavior is common in 2024 and can be triggered by stale Teams cache, a failed upload session, browser storage/cookie issues, or tenant policy restrictions.
This guide gives you a reliable, step-by-step set of fixes across Windows, macOS, the Teams web app, and mobile (iPhone/iPad/Android). Use the methods in order; most fixes are fast and don’t require admin access.

What the Teams error means (and why it happens)
Teams is trying to upload your image to Microsoft’s identity/profile services and then refresh your avatar in the client. When the request fails, Teams reports it generically as “There was a problem saving the photo.”

In practice, the causes usually fall into one (or more) buckets:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Stale or corrupted Teams cache (Windows/macOS clients are the most common).
- Session/cookie issues in the web client.
- Client update mismatch (Teams classic vs New Teams experience) after updates.
- Upload constraints (file size/type/format).
- Org policies that restrict profile photo changes.
- Temporary service issues during Microsoft-side outages or replication delays.
Before you change anything: quick checks that fix most cases
Before you clear anything, do these quick checks. They often resolve the problem without deeper troubleshooting.
- Use a new image: try a different photo file (not the original) to rule out file corruption.
- Confirm the format: JPG or PNG typically work best. Avoid unusual formats like HEIC without conversion.
- Keep it small: use a square image around 512×512 or 1024×1024 and keep the file under ~2 MB if you can.
- Check file location: don’t upload from a network share that may throttle or block reads.
- Try another network: switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile hotspot or vice versa to rule out captive portals/proxy interference.
- Wait 10–30 minutes: if you’ve just changed a photo recently, Teams may need time to propagate.
Fix #1 (most common on Windows): clear Microsoft Teams cache
Cache corruption is the most frequent cause in 2024, especially on Windows. Clearing cache forces Teams to rebuild local state and re-attempt the upload workflow.
Step-by-step (Windows)
- Quit Teams completely.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Under Processes, end tasks named Microsoft Teams, and also Teams if it appears.
- Press Win + R, paste this path, and press Enter:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
- Delete these folders if they exist:
- Application Cache
- Cache (if present)
- databases (optional; safe to delete—Teams will recreate)
- GPUCache (optional)
- Restart Teams and sign in again if prompted.
- Try uploading the photo again.
If you’re using the New Teams experience and the first pass doesn’t help, repeat the cleanup after fully quitting the app. Also check whether you have multiple Teams installations (rare, but it happens after upgrades).

Fix #2: sign out, update Teams, and re-sign in
A mismatch between the client and the service-side upload flow can cause repeated failures. Updating first avoids chasing the issue with an old build.
Update Teams (Windows/macOS)
- Open Teams, then go to Settings (your profile icon > Settings), and confirm you’re on the latest version.
- If you can’t find an explicit update button, restart Teams and let it download updates automatically.
Sign out/re-sign in
- In Teams, select your profile picture (top right).
- Choose Sign out.
- Close Teams fully, reopen it, and sign back in.
Fix #3: update your profile photo via the right UI path
Teams has changed some UI flows in 2024. If you’re using the “edit” icon from the wrong place (or inside a transient panel), you may hit a buggy upload dialog.
Try this exact path in Teams desktop and web:
- Open Teams.
- Click your profile picture (top right).
- Select Manage account or Edit profile (wording varies).
- Look for Change photo / Upload photo.
- Upload a new JPG/PNG and save.
If you see a preview but the save fails, don’t keep retrying the same file. Switch to a different image and attempt again after clearing cache (Fix #1).

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- HD lighting adjustment and autofocus: The Logitech webcam automatically fine-tunes the lighting, producing bright, razor-sharp images even in low-light settings. This makes it a great webcam for streaming and an ideal web camera for laptop use
- Advanced capture software: Easily create and share video content with this Logitech camera that is suitable for use as a desktop computer camera or a monitor webcam
- Stereo audio with dual mics: Capture natural sound during calls and recorded videos with this 1080p webcam, great as a video conference camera or a computer webcam
- Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
Fix #4: try the other client (Web vs Desktop vs Mobile)
One client can fail while others succeed because the upload uses different storage, cookies, and request headers. Testing the other clients quickly tells you whether the problem is local or account/policy-related.
- If desktop fails, try the Teams web app.
- If web fails, try the mobile app.
- If mobile succeeds, your account photo service works and your desktop cache/session likely needs cleanup.
Windows-specific options
If cache clearing didn’t fix it, Windows has a couple of additional angles that matter in 2024.
Reinstall or repair Teams
If Teams is installed as a Microsoft 365 app or via the Microsoft installer, a reinstall can fix broken components. For most users, starting with a cache clear is faster.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Teams.
- Choose Advanced options.
- If available, try Repair. Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall from Microsoft.
Check proxy/firewall interference
Enterprise proxies and security tools can block the avatar upload endpoint or strip needed headers. If you’re on a managed device, ask IT whether profile photo upload is allowed through your current proxy.
macOS-specific options
macOS clients also cache profile/avatar data. Clearing the cache usually resolves the save failure without needing a reinstall.

Clear Teams cache on macOS
- Quit Microsoft Teams.
- Open Finder and choose Go > Go to Folder….
- Paste:
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
- Delete folders named Cache and/or Application Cache if present.
- Reopen Teams and sign in.
- Try uploading the photo again.
If you installed Teams through an enterprise package, the cache path can vary slightly—use the Finder search for “Teams” cache folders if needed.

Web (Browser) fixes
If Teams desktop fails but web works, your Windows/macOS client session is the culprit. If web fails too, you may have account/policy constraints or a broader service problem.
Use a fresh browser session
- Open Microsoft Teams in the browser (Teams web).
- Upload your photo again.
Then do one of these depending on what you use:
Edge or Chrome: clear site data for Teams
- Go to browser settings for Cookies and site data.
- Clear data for Microsoft/Teams-related domains, or clear all site data for the browser (less ideal if you’re trying to preserve logins).
Safari/iOS constraints
Safari’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention can interfere with certain authenticated requests. If you’re on Safari, try Chrome or Edge, or a private window to reduce cookie friction.
Mobile fixes (iOS/iPadOS/Android)
Mobile clients can fail to save photos if the app is stale, permissions are blocked, or the image selection dialog is caching an invalid file reference.
iPhone/iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
- Update the Microsoft Teams app from the App Store.
- Check Teams permissions: Settings > Microsoft Teams > Photos.
- Set Photos permission to Allow Access to All Photos (or at least “Selected Photos” containing your image).
- Open Teams and try uploading the photo again.
Android
- Update the Teams app from Google Play.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Microsoft Teams > Permissions > Photos and videos.
- Grant access to photos and retry.
If you’re still seeing the error, select a different photo from your gallery and try again after force quitting Teams.
If your photo upload is blocked by policy or org settings
In many organizations, changing profile photos is restricted (especially in regulated environments). When policy blocks the request, Teams typically keeps failing with the same generic message.
Signs policy is involved:
- All clients (desktop, web, mobile) fail with the same error.
- You can sign in, but photo upload never completes.
- Only certain users can upload photos while others can’t.
What to do:
- Ask IT whether your tenant allows profile photo updates.
- Request they check Microsoft Entra ID and related profile picture policies.
- If you have access to a ticketing system, attach the exact error message and the time it occurs.
Advanced troubleshooting when the error persists
If the problem continues after cache clearing and client switching, the next steps focus on isolating whether the failure is local, account-specific, or temporary.

Try uploading from a different device/account session
- Log into Teams on a second device using the same account.
- Attempt the upload there.
If it works on the second device, your original client install likely has persistent cache/session corruption.
Wait for replication and try a time-separated retry
Photo updates can take time to propagate to every Teams client. If you changed the photo recently, wait 15–60 minutes and confirm using web first.
Check for storage/size constraints with controlled test files
Do controlled tests: upload a 256×256 JPG, then a 512×512 JPG, then a 1024×1024 JPG. If one size works and others fail, the issue is likely a client-side validation or an endpoint size limit.
Clear browser storage for Microsoft domains (web-only)
If you’re using Teams web and only web fails, clear site data for Microsoft login and Teams domains, then sign in again from scratch.

Upload a simpler image
High-complexity images (very large dimensions, heavy metadata, unusual color profiles) sometimes fail validation. Convert your image to JPG, crop to a square, and re-try.
Common mistakes that keep the error coming back
- Retrying the same broken file instead of switching images to test whether the upload pipeline is working.
- Not fully quitting Teams before clearing cache (Task Manager left running keeps old state alive).
- Clearing cache but not signing out when the failure is session-related.
- Trying only one platform (desktop only), which makes it harder to distinguish local cache bugs from policy/account problems.
- Using HEIC directly from iPhone without converting to JPG/PNG.
FAQs
Why does Teams show there was a problem saving the photo even though my upload completes?
Often the upload request completes, but Teams can’t finalize the avatar update or fails to refresh the UI state. Cache/session issues are the usual culprit. Clear Teams cache and try again using Teams web to confirm the server-side update.
Does changing my photo in Teams update everywhere?
Usually yes, but propagation isn’t instant. In 2024, it can take 15–60 minutes for the change to appear across all Microsoft 365 apps and clients, depending on caching and tenant replication.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can my organization block profile photo changes?
Yes. Some tenants restrict profile picture updates via admin policy. If desktop, web, and mobile all fail with the same message, policy is a strong possibility—open a ticket with IT.
What file types and sizes work best for Teams?
JPG or PNG at square dimensions (for example 512×512 or 1024×1024) is a safe approach. Keep the file size modest (roughly under a few MB) to avoid stricter client-side or service limits.
Will clearing Teams cache log me out everywhere?
Typically it only clears local state for that app. You’ll usually need to sign back into Teams on that device, but it shouldn’t affect your Microsoft account password or identity access elsewhere.
Bottom Line
The Teams “There was a problem saving the photo” message is most often caused by local cache/session problems or a client-side upload flow bug. Start with clearing Teams cache (Windows/macOS), update and re-sign in, then confirm with the Teams web client.
