NotebookLM Prompts: How to Keep Answers Focused on Your Question

A short scope-setting instruction can tell NotebookLM to answer the question asked, skip unnecessary context, and admit when its sources fall short.

Tell NotebookLM to answer the question you asked, skip background you already know, and say when its sources do not contain the answer. That simple scope-setting instruction is the tactic behind the title’s reported improvement—but it is not a guarantee that every response will stay on track.

What to add to a NotebookLM prompt

Try adding this instruction to your question:

Answer only the question I asked. Assume I have read the sources; skip introductory background and do not widen the scope. If the sources do not answer it, say so.

This wording is a practical formulation of the reported tactic, not a verified quotation from the article named in the title. Its purpose is to set three boundaries: answer the literal question, leave out unnecessary context, and acknowledge when the notebook’s material does not support an answer.

Why the instruction fits NotebookLM

NotebookLM is organized around sources added to a notebook. Google’s April 2, 2025 announcement describes asking questions about those sources through chat and working with citations and notes. A scope instruction tells the chat what kind of response you want; it does not change what the sources contain.

How to check whether the answer improved

  1. Ask a specific question. State the point you want answered rather than requesting a broad overview.
  2. Add the scope instruction. Ask for a direct answer, omit background, and request an explicit admission if the sources do not answer the question.
  3. Compare the response with your question. Check whether it answers the point you asked about without adding material you did not request.
  4. Inspect the citations. Follow NotebookLM’s cited sources to see whether the answer is grounded in the notebook material.

A response that is a better fit is a useful result to verify, not proof that the instruction will work reliably on another question.

What this prompt can—and cannot—promise

The title’s claim that answers stopped wandering is an author-reported experience, not evidence of a guaranteed result for all NotebookLM users. The full article behind the title was not available for review, so its exact prompt, examples, and testing details cannot be confirmed.

A 2025 arXiv preprint by Eugenio Tufino describes a custom educational tutor using instructions alongside curated source material. It also notes that repeated prompts may produce different outputs. That implementation was not a controlled test of this scope-setting wording, but it is a reason to review each answer rather than assume identical behavior every time. The available evidence does not establish a success rate for the prompt.

When the answer still goes off track

  • It gives a broad introduction: Narrow the question and explicitly ask for the answer first, with no general overview.
  • It adds adjacent topics: Name the boundary—for example, ask it to address only the specified concept, not related implications.
  • It answers beyond the sources: Ask it to distinguish what the notebook supports from what it cannot establish, then check the citations.

These are ways to make your requested boundary clearer, not proven fixes. If the sources do not contain the information you need, changing the wording cannot make that information appear in the notebook.
