NotebookLM can turn material in a notebook into flashcards and quizzes, but the learning benefit comes from how you use them: try to recall an answer before revealing it, check it against your source, and return to difficult items in later sessions. Research supports retrieval practice and spaced study as useful learning strategies; it does not establish that NotebookLM is better than Quizlet or that this particular app workflow guarantees better results.
Make source-based flashcards and quizzes in NotebookLM
Start with course notes, readings, or other materials you are allowed to use. Add them to a NotebookLM notebook, then use its flashcard and quiz features to create study prompts from those sources. Google describes both formats as based on notebook material. Google’s overview of NotebookLM features for students and its September 2025 feature announcement describe these capabilities; product details may change.

Use flashcards for focused recall
Flashcards work well for terms, facts, definitions, and concise concepts. Read the prompt and formulate an answer before revealing the response. If you only recognize the answer once it is visible, count the item as uncertain rather than mastered.
Use quizzes to check connections
Quizzes can help you check broader comprehension: whether you can distinguish related ideas, apply a concept, or explain a relationship. Treat each question as a chance to retrieve an answer, not as a quick test of recognition.

Turn each study session into retrieval practice
Retrieval practice is the effort to bring information to mind, rather than simply rereading it. Reviews of learning research identify practice testing as a useful strategy across different ages and subject areas, while research on spacing and retrieval considers their application in educational settings. These findings support the study principles, not a specific NotebookLM feature or outcome. See Dunlosky and colleagues’ review of learning techniques and Carpenter, Pan, and Butler’s 2022 review.
- Attempt the answer first. Say or write what you remember before opening the answer or explanation.
- Check the explanation and source. Google says NotebookLM offers an “explain” option for flashcards and quizzes, with citations pointing back to original source material. Follow those references to verify important details rather than assuming every generated item is complete or correct.
- Mark misses and uncertainty. Keep track of questions you got wrong, guessed on, or could not explain clearly. Those are the items that need another retrieval attempt.
- Return later. Review those items in a later session instead of repeating the same material immediately and treating a single successful answer as proof of mastery.
Space reviews instead of cramming them together
Spacing means distributing study and retrieval sessions over time. It complements retrieval: try to recall material, then revisit it after an interval. The reviewed learning research supports spacing as a useful strategy, but it does not prescribe one universally optimal interval for every learner, subject, or exam.

A practical routine is to revisit missed and uncertain items in subsequent study sessions, while also testing yourself on material you answered correctly. Adjust how soon you return based on how difficult the material is and how confidently you can retrieve it. NotebookLM can provide the study prompts; this routine applies the broader learning principles.

What the evidence does—and does not—say
In a 2007 study, Jeffrey Karpicke and Henry Roediger reported that repeated testing enhanced retention relative to repeated studying in the first experiment. Alternating study and test trials produced the best retention in that experiment, whose final test came one week after the learning phase. That result is evidence about the conditions studied, not a guarantee for every course or a measured result for NotebookLM. Read the study, “Repeated retrieval during learning is the key to long-term retention”.

The available product descriptions explain NotebookLM’s source-based flashcards, quizzes, explanations, and source references. They do not provide a controlled comparison with Quizlet. If you are choosing between study workflows, compare the things that matter for your use: whether prompts draw on your materials, whether you need cards, quizzes, or both, how feedback lets you verify answers, whether you can return to reviews over time, and how much editing the generated material needs. No overall winner follows from the evidence cited here.
